Smokers tend to be less educated and from a lower socio-economic class.
So why would I want to date someone like that?
Better a smoker than a snob.
BTW, I know several PhD's that smoke and several of our most wealthy citizens that smoke. I wouldn't be so quick to judge others. As for the question, I cannot control what my dh does nor do I try. What I can control is what he does when he is with me. If he wants to smoke, that is his business but he doesnt' smoke in the house or in the car. I want him to respect me and my wishes; but I know that I should respect his too.
To say, "I won't be friends with someone who smokes" is really being awfully rigid. You could be missing out on the best friend you could have. Being a smoker has nothing to do with someone's personality. You can be friends with someone without being around everything they do. I am a former smoker and have many friends that still smoke, they just don't smoke around me. I certainly don't go around sniffing people to see if I smell smoke to determine if I am going to be friends with them or not.

I know some may respond with "my kids will never smoke" - but if you are honest with yourself, you will realize that it's impossible to take that stand because it's still an unknown.. My DD swore up and down she would NEVER, EVER smoke.. Something very traumatic happened in her life 6 years ago and she started smoking.. Although she has since quit, "never" had always been a big word in her vocabulary..

and we're off! Great googly moogly.......
