Are you able to smoke outside on your balcony even if your room is not smoking?

I dont see why not, but Id make sure you close the doors behind you so that smoke doesnt blow back inside.....hard to get that stale smoke odor out once it's in. Also, someone in the next balcony might complain so I would check with the front desk to be sure. Im chewing on a Nicatrol as we speak, so I understand :)

I just got back from 5 days at Boardwalk and 2 of the mornings were ruined by my neighbors on each side smoking on the balcony. I think Disney needs to clarify their position on smoking on balconies of non smoking rooms.
I stay in a non smoking room for a reason, I should not have to retreat from the patio and close my door on a beautiful morning because of smoke.

Good point, I suspect they will not allow any smoking period, in a non smoking room. I can understand not wanting smoke blowing into your balcony/room.

Soon to be, smoke free :)

Good point, I wondered about too. I hate smoke and it makes DH sick (headaches) and I have one daughter with asthma. Unfortunately, I have a sister who is addicted, so she can't seem to go a couple days without smoking. We had thought about vacationing with her and I wondered if she could just go out on the balcony......but now I can see that this isn't a solution. I guess she will just not be able to come with us, or she will have to get her own room.

Thanks for mentioning that about the smoke coming over to the balcony. I agree, that would be terrible and had only thought about ways to accomadate my sister. If she wants to join us at WDW, she will just have to quit smoking! I would LOVE that.

I was hoping that others would understand my concern. I thought hard about asking my neighbors to not smoke outside, but I didnt know BWV official position and frankly didnt feel like arguing about it. Had I gotten the reaction I usually get from people when they are confronted, it would have made me angry and ruined my morning.
Hakuna Matata !

If you request a smoking room wouldn't it be fine to smoke on your balcony as well?

I doubt DVC or any hotel is actually going to tell someone they can't smoke on the balcony (with the exception of the AKL where the outlawed it on ALL balconies). My mother smokes, we get a smoking room when she is with us and she only smokes on the balcony. There is probably NO gurantee that someone in a non-smoking room is not going to smell it. Kind of like when you walk by the smoking areas at Disney, you can smell the smoke.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but I am sure that a CM at the check in desk at BWV told DW and I last time we were there, that the hotels are not broken down by smoking/non-smoking sections. In that they have to spread the smoking rooms around because if they did not then whole sections or floors would smell like smoke? It made sense to me at the time. As for smoking on the balcony, I would only smoke on the balcany of a smoking room. The balcony is part of the room, right?.

P.S. Both my wife and I are smokers, and we always ask for a smoking room.

Everybody have a great trip.

Frankly, I would appreciate smokers not ruining my use of the balconey by smoking in non-smoking room balconies.

I already pay higher health insurance premiums to pay for the health consequences of the unhealthy habits specific to smokers, don't I?

I understand that puts smokers in a difficult position. If they have to have a cig they either smell up the room for the next guest, or go out on the balcony and blow smoke towards others.

You know this post is going to be moved to the debate board by one of the moderators - I say if you want to smoke request a smoking room then there is no debate.

All of the smoking rooms at the BWV are on the second floor (lobby level). Not all of the rooms on the second floor are smoking rooms, however.

Smoke goes where it goes - it generally rises absent a breeze. It is very possible that smoke from someone smoking on the balcony of their smoking room will "drift" to a place where it isn't welcome.

This topic comes up from time to time and I'm not sure that we know the "official" position. I do know that in the hot humid Florida air, the smoke hangs and drifts and can make sitting on the balcony unpleasant if there is smoker nearby. At OKW, I'm okay with folks going out the "front" door and smoking on that balcony area. No one is spending a lot of time there and the smoke would be less intrusive. I'm not sure what to say at the other DVC's. The smoke would drift to the non-smoking balconies.

I agree with CarolMn...smoke goes where it goes, and it ALWAYS heads straight for someone who can't stand it!
When I smoked, I SOMETIMES smoked on the balcony of a non-smoking room. I'd always try to make sure no one was around but I may have been bothering someone I couldn't see. I wouldn't do it if I still smoked.

Your sister would probably like to quit smoking too.
Easier said than done!
Please talk to her about it.
It's easy to just go take a walk and smoke somewhere where it won't bother anyone.
I think that MOST smokers understand how much the smoke bothers other people and can manage to "get their fix" without inconveniencing anyone else.
We traveled to DW with a smoker a few months after I quit and I never actually saw her have a cigarette, although she did have some.

I don't think smoking should be allowed on the balconies of non-smoking rooms but I THINK it is allowed at Disney Resorts.
Unfortunately, smoke will also travel from a smoking room balcony to a non-smoking room balcony.
Unless the resorts become completely non-smoking, it will continue to be a problem.

Although I disagree with it, it has been posted previously that the front desk has consistenly said that smoking is ok on a non-smoking balcony/porch. They have also told smokers that they can smoke in a non-smoking room if a smoking room is not available.

Yep! I had requested a smoking room a few years ago at the CBR and there were none available when we checked in.They gave us a non smoking roomand a couple of ashtrays and said don't worry about.Needless to say,I went outside,I didn't feel right doing it.
Ah,but now I am free,I have been smoke free for almost 6 months and it feels great!

Routemandan,

CONGRATULATIONS on quitting smoking - from what I hear it is the hardest thing to do - my MIL quit 2 years ago and she had smoked for 35yrs! - I grew up with 2 parents and a sister who smoked and I never did - I only am very loud about it now because my DD suffers from asthma and smoke "dust" sets her off - I just don't like to see her suffer:(

RoutemanDan Congrats on being smoke free.
I'm thinking abouit bringing a fan on the balcony and blowing away offensive odors and bugs!

We just got back from Vero, 5 nights in a 1 bedroom non smoking( trip report to follow)
The studio next door had a guy smoking on the balcony. I did not spend much time on my balcony, but just the same, find it strange that they let people smoke on the balcony of a non smoking room. It was not a major problem, this time.

Bottom line NO SMOKING should be NO SMOKING PERIOD end of discussion. They don't let you smoke in the parks ( except in certain areas) , why should you be able to puff away next to non smokers.

Disney's policy has been to allow smoking on balconies of resort rooms. In some cases, they have also condoned smoking in a non-smoking room when no smoking optional rooms were available to meet a request.

Please feel free to continue any smoking discussion on the Debate Board.

Thanks!
