Smoking/Non Smoking rooms?? How bad is it?

so how bad is a smoking room really? We luckily don't have alergies or med conditions so if I didn't request non and got smoking it would not be the end of the world.
Isn't there some sort of deoderizer or sanitizer that can be sprayed if the smell is very bad when we get there? Has anyone ever had that experience?

I hate to make to many requests on a ressie... and what I REALLY want is a MK view.

Our first trip we were given a smoking room-we didnt know to request otherwise. It was so horrible and spraying deoderizers didnt help, that we had to switch rooms. From then on, non smoking rooms are our top priority. We are not allergic to smoke, but a smoking room to a non smoker is disgusting and uncomfortable. I would request n/s if you have any concerns it will bother you. If not, then see how you feel when you get into the room.

We got put in a "smoking optional" room our first night at the BC last year. The smell was terrible. You could tell they tried to spray something over it but it sure didn't help. We asked to be moved and got a new room the next morning. It was a bad night. We were all stuffed up and the clothes we had been wearing smelled the next day.

Your clothe will only smell, if there is smoke fumes from recent smoking in the room, and only if they havent had the windows open prior to your arrival in the room.

Excuse me, but I don't like being called a liar. It very much is true and I guess that means there were fumes from recent smoking because it happened. You need to learn some manners.

... on a second note: If there were fumes in the room prior to your arrival, why didnt you open the door/window in the room for a short period of time (20 - 30 minutes), then there would be no fumes left in the room.

You posted that you stayed in the room over night. So, since you dont like fumes, i guess you would have vented the room, therefore no fumes would be in the air in the room.

I highly doubt, that mousekeeping would leave the cleaned room after the prior guests of the room, without having vented the room.

If there is no fumes in the air, your clothe would not smell of smoke after your 1 night stay in the room.

How do i know that, you might ask. Because im a smoker, and i have been smoking for the past 20-25 years. I havnt lost my ability to smell, and i know that in a room where people smoke, on a regular basis, will have a less plesant smell of smoke (the odors will stick to carpets, curtains, drapes etc - thats what makes the room smell).

If I am with my mother who smokes regularly, I smell of smoke. She doesn't smoke around me or even inside for that matter. However, when I get home, I can smell it in my hair, my clothes and on my skin.

By the way, smells do linger and expand. However, they also lose some of their potency. That is the nature of any gas in the world. It is entirely possible that the smell will remain and transfer to other items that are in the room. That is just my 2 cents as a science teacher.

P.S. I too am a former smoker (10+years) who has only been smoke free for a couple of years now. Your sense of smell does weaken as a smoker as does your sense of taste.

Our clothes and luggage smelled like smoke too after a recent trip to CBR.

unfortunately, the carpeting and furniture absorb the smell, so even if the bedding is cleaned, a very heavy smell remains in smoking rooms, even if it hasn't been smoked in for a while..

we always request non-smoking rooms.....only once were we given a smoking room (at BC)....the moment we walked in we turned green.....i immediately called down to the front desk (this was before we began staying concierge)...

they told me that they'd given us a complimentary upgrade to a nicer room which happened to be smoking (it was a larger than standard room with a full balcony and a water view)..

i told them i would much prefer the standard room, standard view, no balcony without the stench of smoke.....that we simply could not stay in that room for 5 minutes more....they immediately moved us to another room....

We got put in a smoking room, by mistake one time at CSR, it was horrible, we walked into the room, I said OMG..this is a smoking room, we turned around and went straight back to front desk to have them put us in a smoking room.

Bad thing was..the smoking room was an excellent location, pool view, great parking. The non-smoking room was in the back 40..we were not thrilled at all.

first thing I do when I arrive anywhere, is hit a walmart for febreeze spray and unscented OUST.

I can't stand the smell of stale smoke in a room, and have been stuck in one many times. the febreeze sprayed around on the carpets and curtains, and the oust sprayed in the air a few times really does the trick for me, be sure to use the unscented though or you end up with a sickening sweet smell for a while. I also buy a citrus(grapefruit if i can find it) solid deoderizer stick or a yankee candle hanging car scented thingy and set those out.

I never take a chance ! These work for me, hope it works for you.!

Thanks for your thoughts. Of course, people just don't agree on this as other posts indicate so we'll just agree to disagree and move on. I don't want to hijack the OP thread. Have a great time on your trip. I see it is just a few days away. I'm jealous-I have a year to go.

We were in Poly Conc. one time and all they had was a smoking optional room. We do not have serious smoke allergies although my husband absolutely hates the odor. They offered to do a super-duper cleaning of the room. When we returned, we were choking from the deodorizer used on the carpets, rugs etc.. Truly, if you were asthmatic, you'd have landed in the hospital. The smoke odor was certainly unpleasant but these fumes were much worse. With all fairness, if the room is aired out after this deep cleaning for at least several hours, the effect might not be as pronounced. Threehearts

Former smoker, too (20 years). I was always amazed when people smelled smoke on me. It didn't take long after quitting to realize how much the smell stays with you and how much more you notice it as an ex-smoker. My Mom (smoker) always tells me ex-smokers are the worst--she's probably right.

Anyway, make your requests in order of importance. In the OP's case, you might want to make yours like: Good view of MK castle, non-smoking, etc, etc... That way they'll understand you really want to see MK but don't really want a smoking room. Percentage wise, there aren't that many smoking rooms, and I would assume they'd rather save them for smokers.

We just stayed at the ASMu last week in a NON-smoking room that had been smoked in. It was terrible and really did hit you everytime you walked in. Had we not had 4 rooms in a row in a preferred biulding I would have asked to move. They brought the machine but it did not help and they also sprayed a deodorizer which also did not do much.

Sorry if my posts was a bit too much, but as i stated, i have been 15 years in the Navy. We are much worse in "real life", but were used to it. We in the Navy usualy just say what we think, and the point where we get ofended (sp?) is not the same as "regular" people.

A couple of stories from the navy:

Senior officer
I used to be a crewmember of a minelayer (a ship which could carry 288 seamines, 500 kilos each), and we had a smoking policy onboard the ship. Everyone respected that policy, so that the non smokers and smokers could live with it.

We had 1 person onboard who was a fanatical non smoker, and he was also a sports fanatic. The person was the ships senior officer, number 2 after the commander of the ship.

As a senior officer he was the one who made most of the rules of how things should be on a everyday basis onboard. No big deal, we respected him.

At some point in time, a master sargeant told me, that our senior officer in the past was a heavy smoker (smoking cigars), and he had been fat too (nothing wrong about that) because he realy liked food.

We thought this was REALY FUNNY, because he acted like a fanatic, and never told the crew about those things. Pointless to say, since that day, every now and then we made fun of him, but he could take it. Afterall its the Navy

Master sargeant
Well the reason for this second story, is the previous posts regarding the use of sprays to remove the smell of smoke.

We had a master sargeant onboard, called Vagn, ugly name btw. , he was not very popular, and a heavy smoker btw.

Back in October 2004, the ship was going to be scraped, and all the things onboard the ship was being removed from the ship.
The commander and the senior officer were no longer a part of the crew, and therefore the master sargeant Vagn, thougt that he would move from his previous office to the office whitch had belonged to the senior office.
The remaining crew of sargeants thought that, now Vagn had lost it, as usual,and to take "revenge" on him, they took 3 different cardboards which smelled of pine wood, roses and regular room fresh. Those 3 items where then placed in the venting system. The next day when he entered the office, i tell you, i have never smelled anything that bad in my entire life, you would have got a headache straight away.

The crew laughed all day long, and he was realy mad, he tried to find out where the smell came from, but never found out.

He was so dumb, that he continued to use the senior officers office, instead he should have moved back to his old office,

The reason that housekeeping can't vent the rooms like you do in Denmark is the heat and humidity here in Florida. Denmark remains nice and cool throughout the year compared to here and it's very hard to compare. (Know it well, my mom is from your country and most of my relatives from her side still live there!) It's not easy to leave the windows open here, the humidity and heat can actually make the smell worse.

And it can cling to your clothes after one night. If there was a heavy smoker occupying the room prior to you they may have just had a few that very same morning. My parents owned a condo here in Florida which they rented to a very heavy smoker. They redid the place and replaced the AC unit when they decided to take it over. We spent one night in their guest room and when we returned our pillows and our clothes smelled like we had been in a bar with a lot of smokers. My parents ended up having to have the duct work replaced because it still stunk of smoke and permeated everything!

By the way, my grandad was also in the Danish Navy! I will be in Denmark in 2 weeks and can't wait!!!
