Smoking Ban

Unless they are putting the DSA after security smokers will have to pass through it again. It’s too much of a risk letting that many people out and back in on good faith that someone else doesn’t hand them a gun or a knife.
There’s one in Animal kingdom already right after the Rainforest Cafe, Hollywood and Epcot probably won’t be a problem to add them there. But Magic Kingdom May have a issue. They have one by the boat docks but that is outside of security.

I'm absolutely amazed by the amount of people who seem offended by this new rule and are changing their plans. My husband has verbalized his dislike but has also said he will just smoke less then. No big deal and he's a heavy smoker. I agree with the ban. I do think it will increase the number of rule breakers but the outrage and offense blows my mind.
Agreed, it's mind-blowing. Never in a million years would I think someone would consider cancelling a trip because of something like this. I'm glad it seems that the vast majority (at least on here, I'll admit I'm a little hesitant to venture to Facebook/Twitter for this) seem to agree with change.

It doesn't help that a lady on twitter complained she "lost 2 clients this morning" because of the ban and has decided to now tell all of her clients to just smoke where they want until a CM tells them otherwise. ***?

Considering I've seen FB comments that not going a day without smoking if you have children means you shouldn't be a parent... it's the outright hatred a few spew that just has me

I wouldn't trust having people outside security and then passing back inside. Moving security out is always a sensible plan and if you rework the park entries like they are at Epcot, you can accommodate both security and smokers. Making the security ring as wide as possible and as far back from an entrance is good. It creates a lot of open space, a better and happier environment. Of course, not every park has the space necessary to do it. I could see it as a part of larger plan for the future but not by May 1.

Hooray on the smoking ban!!! Now hopefully they will crack down on those who disregard the no smoking rule and smoke around the park anyway!

The main issue is that smokers were not staying is designated areas anymore. Yes, the smoking areas in the parks were hidden and out of the way but people were ignoring the areas and smoking anywhere they wanted.

Couldn't agree more! Just this past trip earlier this month we saw several people hiding cigarettes while walking around the park.

My mother actually puts out cigarettes on a surface and puts them in her purse, but thank you for your concern. However, I'm sure you're speaking generally, even though you reference "because your mother needs to smoke", so I understand your concern, because unfortunately people do that. However, at the same time, it's comments like that make my mother feel like she's a criminal, regardless of whether she broke the rules once, or not, she repeatedly always tells me this whenever she has to walk long distances in order to smoke a cigarette and that's when she does follow the rules.

Also, your hypothetical story could also happen in a smoking area that already exists today and could have happened for years.

"The reason" is rubbish regardless. Crowd control has nothing to do with it. The areas are secluded and off to the side. The ice also is due to "crowd control", but they want you to stand in line at a concession (which will cause congestion too), because you just might buy something.

I go by my previous statement, if cigarettes were sold in the parks like alcohol is now this wouldn't have happened.

I am sure that it is hard for your Mom's generation, who have had free reign for decades to smoke wherever they wanted but now have had that taken away. They got to smoke without concerning themselves with how it affected others and those that complained at that time were told to suck it up. Now the shoe is on the other foot and it does not feel good. My mom smoked since she was 16 and paid for it with her life at 62. No one thinks your mom is a criminal, but they also don't want someone else's bad habits to affect their lives. Which is reasonable.

As a smoker, I can totally see how this would change my plans. But not as in total cancellation. Get in early, ride the rides, lunch near or on the way to the gates, get out at 4 pm for a nap before dinner then back at it. That's five cigarettes per entry. One before entry, one before and after lunch, one before and after nap time. Repeat as needed.

It really isn't all that different than what I normally do anyway. Right now I break the parks into small pieces which are centered on the smoking areas. MK has a left side day and a right side day. There is really no difference making the gate the edge of the left side and right side of the park, except I happen to call exact same spot (the gate) the start of the left and right side.

The big change I could see is smokers gravitating to the resort dining options because that would be less annoying and allows for a nap. The resorts do have some nice dining options that I would rather do after a nap. Aside from Epcot, I can't think of too many "must do" dining experiences in the parks. The few that exist are well worth a good walk.

I’m a vapor who absolutely knows that the rules apply to me, I don’t like it but if that’s the rule then I will follow as I did before, not every vapor or smoker is inconsiderate. I totally respect that people don’t want their children or themselves around smoke or vapor, but just because some people do have this nasty habit doesn’t mean that we have to be demonized.
My first thought when hearing this announcement was that the smokers who DIDN'T follow the rules and increasingly smoked wherever (outside of the designated areas) ruined it for the other smokers who DID obey Disney's previous policy. I know there are considerate smokers. I've seen them. And it IS appreciated.

I actually thought it’d be much worse :rotfl:but I have seen some things that have shocked me. The worst of it is people saying now their kids won’t enjoy Disney as if it’s Disney’s fault. :sad2:

Which is the most laughable thing I have seen. They do realize that we can SMELL it right? I have seen many of these cigarette "hiders". I smell them first and can pinpoint the area and see it in their palms. I don't get this behavior.

And now this is going to happen at least 10 times more. It doesn't matter how much it's enforced. A smoker will smoke.
I'm hoping not. I base this on the fact that when the designated smoking areas were first put into effect, my observation was that it was initially obeyed. Then, as the years passed I saw it obeyed less and less. My theory is that guests, over time, realized that no one was enforcing this policy, so why should they follow it? If this new policy IS strictly enforced from the start, I think it will effect a change. At least I hope so. Really, if we cannot obey the rules of the property owner, where are we as a society? We are guests at Disney Parks. We do not have the RIGHT to do as we please just because we paid admission.

I'm quite happy about this - smoke, from cigarettes or vaping, makes my eyes water and gives me a migraine.

I'm especially happy vaping is including! Not at Disney, but my husband and I were at a convention several years ago (Dragon Con) and we were inside, waiting in a line. A woman nearby to us was vaping and every time someone asked her to stop, she refused, yelling, "It's just Vapor!!!."

Her JustVapor did indeed give me a migraine. So glad I won't have to deal with that at Disney

The city we're from in western Canada banned smoking in public about 15 years ago. I mean you aren't allowed to smoke anywhere here other than your car or home. it's been that way for so long it's hard to remember a time when smoking was allowed.

It was a shock to us our first trip to WDW in 2008 when there were people smoking there. Hard for me to have any sympathy when I come from a place where smokers basically have no rights. It's just what I'm used to.

Same. I am cursed with the nose of a Bloodhound. Get headaches from odors. Perfume, chemicals, cigarette/cigar smoke, even garlic or spices (cooking in a confined area) and I get a headache.

I wonder if any travel agents have gotten an angry call from Disney customer service? :) "Please, for the love of god, stop telling people to break the rules..."

One of the nice parts about Disney trips is CM's (and security/police) do backflips to make sure you have a good time. On the rare occasions I have seen them give someone the heave-ho, that guest stopped being a good guest very shortly into the conversation.

Stupid people fact: The words "hOST" and "gUeST" seem to be a phonetic drift from the exact same word. Apparently, before there were modern languages, there was one word that expressed both ideas. It still remains that way in a lot of languages. Good guests are related to good hosts and vice versa.

The people who didn't follow the rules before won't follow them now. They don't respect the rules in the first place.

It's the people you describe who brought about the ban. I think it's easier for WDW to enforce an out and out ban than the previous smoking restrictions, especially now that they spell out the vaping is likewise banned.

I do feel for the people who followed the rules and are now negatively affected. It's always that way. The ones who refuse to follow the rules ruin it for the rest. I am not a smoker, but I appreciate the people who took the time and made the effort to smoke in the designated areas. I know it was inconvenient for them and I appreciate that they did it anyway. So if that describes any of you, I thank you for all the years that you searched out the designated smoking areas and I'm sorry they will no longer be there for you.
