For anyone who is unaware, smoking is allowed at the Disney resort pools. If you are offended by cigarette smoke, Disney suggests you kindly ask the smoker to refrain from smoking around you. If they do not comply to your kind request, Disney suggests you find another lounge chair.

Perhaps if the OP had said "it's allowed" in her post, and left it that, no one would have responded negatively. Her biased and lengthy diatribe is hard to ignore.

I have deleted my biased and lengthy diatribe that was so hard for you all to ignore. I do apologize if I offended anyone by my original post.

Thank you.

Ok not that I don't agree that inhaling someone elses smoke is not fun, but do we have to try to harrass someone because they have a habit, that as an ex smoker, I am sure they have tried to quit. Until it is illegal there is no reason to publicly humiliate and talk down to someone because they are smoking when it is an outdoor setting.

I think that maybe if you had approached them in a different manner, they would either have moved or put the cigarettes out. If smoking is allowed in an area, nonsmokers should not be putting them down just because they are following the rules.

A. I think that they should have found a spot to smoke where there were no other people or other people who were already smoking .

B. I think you could have approached this in a less argumentative way.

Always on the lookout for the smoking police.

I come from a non smoking family, my DH & I do not smoke but my in-las do however. I do hate it when someone comes and sits down right next to you and starts smoking. I think that maybe the polite thing to do was to sit somewhere else or politily say "Do you mind if I smoke" I know and understand it is there right to smoke but I am always polite and aware of others feelings. I was enjoying the pool one day w/ my 1yro DD and noticed a women walking through the pool area. She was just flinging her ashes all over the place and then of course she just tossed her still lit cigerette on the ground right there in the pool area. I politily asked her to pick it up I mean there are kids walking around there bare foot. She just glared at me. And for the rest of the trip if we happend to see her on the bus she would always "accidently" kick our stroller or trip over our feet and of course never move out of our way!

Cigarette smoke at the water parks/pools dosent annoy me greatly as it blows away pretty quickly, what I think is a bit minging is when cigarette ends are discarded on the ground (or in the sand at water parks) and kids are running around in bare feet. Yuck

I also think that it would be nice if the pool areas had smoking and non-smoking sections. It's not a cure, what with the wind and all but it would be a bit helpful I believe. Threehearts

Kicking your stroller? It's amazing how evil those smokers can be! When I go to the hotel pool, I find screaming kids, rude teenagers and obnoxious pina colada drinkers can be annoying, but they have as much right to be there as I do. Though you find it annoying, getting a whiff of a cigarette outdoors poses a heath risk to no one. You should be more concerned with inhaling toxic fumes from the hundreds of Disney buses on property. If your lungs are sensitive to smoke, be sure to avoid all Disney fireworks shows, especially Illuminations.

I guess I could have just asked her to put it out but I truly was curious if smoking was allowed by the pool. I am not the type of person who walks through the smoking section and makes faces and comments because people are smoking. I understand the habit and don't think less of someone because they smoke. If I knew smoking was allowed I would have just asked her to please not smoke when my kids were around or I would have just moved all together. I really wanted to know if it was allowed. I wasn't talking down to her or belittling her. I did say excuse me before I asked her the question. She ignored me both times. I am not the smoking police but I am a non smoker and cigarette smoke is offensive to me. If I wanted my children inhaling that stuff I'd light one up myself. This trip there were so many more inconsiderate smokers than any trip in the past. We even encountered someone smoking IN LINE for the Winnie the Pooh ride. Luckily we had a fast pass so we got right on otherwise I sure would have said something. While waiting for the parade at MK, a couple lit up right under the same canopy we were all under. I looked for a smoking sign and found none. I did not say anything and do you know what happened, another smoker came along and asked if it was OK to smoke there. This couple told them they didn't know and didn't care. Sure enough smoker #3 lit up as well. We just moved from our spot that we had been waiting in for a half an hour into a spot that was full sun rather than the nice shady spot we found. Like I said, I am not the smoking police. I just wanted to let people know the resort smoking rules in case they were unaware as I was. Thanks.

Arrrrrrrrr

When some swab fails to obey me command of 'belay that smoke', me takes a different approach, splashing. Arrrr, it be a little childish, but darn fun!

If that fails to work, then there is option two, 'beans, it's what's for dinner!'

darrrrrrrrrrren

AKL sells cigars at the pool YUCK! I was walking in the area in front of the pool bar and it was full of smoke. I got out of there ASAP. Nothing worse than cigar smoke:( Now that I think about it in a place full of animals that's the resort where we encountered the most second hand smoke. Go figure.

Ummm, must STRONGLY disagree with this statement above. Two of my children are HIGHLY reactive to smoke and I go to extreme lengths to prevent an acute asthma attack and spending our holiday at the ER. And yes I think it is extremely rude of someone to kick their stroller. You're going to Disneyworld- expect kids and loud teenagers- you don't have to expect an adult who acts like a brat. That said, I would have moved my tail to another chair- and if another smoker plops down next to me- then I'll say something- I'll move once but I won't move 3 or 4 times. And I politely explain that I've already moved once and 9 out of 10 smokers have politely moved or given up that cigarrette when they hear my plea. I understand the original poster thought for certain it wasn't allowed- that's called assuming- and is never good. But given that, I can see where she was upset and her tact/approach may have not been the most friendliest. But lets not take this example and start throwing around statements like the one above which is also an assumption and completely false.

I also believe at a pool they should have a designated smoke corner- I'd rather it be concentrated where it's easier for me to avoid it altogether.

My asthmatic 5 year son recently spent 6 months inhaling Pulmicort through a Nebulizer every day, to heal his lungs. I would not think twice about taking him to a hotel pool that allows smoking. After all .. IT'S OUTDOORS!

I just spent sunday night at a concert that was sorta out doors, it was at Texas Stadium. Plenty of space, almost like being outside, but it still bothered me. It doesn't matter if it's inside or outside, smoke drifts and it can cause health issues for some people.

I agree with this, and I wish they would provide them with ashtrays, so we wouldn't be stepping on the butts.

Most campgrounds where we camp and swim do not allow smoking near the pool. We have been told, the cig butts do some damage to the pool filters..where they often find the cigs. I was surprised that smoking is OK at Dis pools. I would especially wish that smokers of cigars would smoke elsewhere..I find the smell very ovensive..and hard to get away from, especially when it's muggy and opressive heat.

I am a non-smoker, but my husband smokes outdoors. I am actually surprised, like the OP, that the pool doesn't have a designated smoking section.

Florida has enacted strict rules over the last year regarding smoking in public places (e.g. no smoking in restaurants).

I would think Disney would create a smoking acceptable section by their pools.

It would seem this would make both parties happy. Those that are allergic or sensitive to smoke could avoid the area, and those that want to smoke by the pool still could.

Maybe someone should recommend this to disney?

Just a thought :)

I do not believe that I was rude by any means. I also cannot understand how people can say I am rude by asking a question in a polite way. You were not there to hear my conversation so how do you know I was rude? I was polite, I said excuse me, I asked if smoking was allowed at the pool. What is rude about that? If she would have said, "yes" then I would have asked her to please not smoke when the kids were out of the water. She ignored me and gave me a dirty look. After knowing she was allowed to smoke she then found her voice and piped up that I can move if I don't like it. I did not react to that. I did not harrass her. Come on people. I love they way people can read a thread and turn it around to be something else. This was not an attack on smokers. This was to share my experience and inform people of the policy. I will be writing a letter to the resort to request a non smoking section at the pool. I know it will not do any good but just maybe it will. Walking outdoors and passing a smoker is much different than pulling up a lounge chair(we all know how close they squeeze those things together) and having someone smoke right next to you. It's not just a whiff, it's as if you are smoking.

Thanks to those of you who chose to just read my post and not assume yourself that I was rude or a smoker hater. My Mom was a smoker for years and I still found it in my heart to love her!

Whoa, easy. It wasn't an attack. It was an observation. I think the big fuss that was made was rude. I'm sure you're a fine human being, but I think you were rude in this instance. No big deal. From you post, I believe you made too big a deal out of it. Have a nice one.
