Smithsonian wants Aretha Franklin's hat

I have to agree with Aretha, thats not a hat! It's a chapeau! :rotfl2:

“I am considering it. It would be hard to part with my chapeau since it was such a crowning moment in history."

Does chapeau mean ugly? ;)

I actually liked it! :thumbsup2

Some black women like to wear hats to formal events. Very often the hats are large and dramatic. Taking this into consideration, yes, I thought it was a very nice hat!:confused3

I loved the hat, and really who else could get away with wearing it but Aretha!:thumbsup2

I told DH I wanted a hat like it and looked at me like I had lost my mind. :rotfl:

Well, I loved it and everyone I know agrees I could totally wear that hat.

SOME
Boy, Mike you should see my church on Sunday morning. :rotfl2:
Aretha's is mild compared to some of them.

Warning: You have to be the "Queen of soul" to pull off a hat like that.

I want that hat! I love it--and I'd wear it.

I wore a similar hat to DD's wedding. (She helped choose it.)

Love it!

I adore bows and I LOVED the hat. I only wish that I could pull off a hat like that, but trust me, I couldn't!

It is something about which most of America commented on without worrying how it would be viewed in a hundred years. Nobody was concerned with its historical significance or how it would appear to future generations.

It is about the only thing that I imagine will interest anyone in 100 years.

When they read all the boring comments about how "historical" it all was and how people were proud to have been a part of the "history", they will yawn.

When they read people talking about the hat, they're going to want to know what it looked like.

Good for the Smithsonian.

...and it isn't just old black ladies. Old white ladies do it, too. I plan to be one. ::yes::

I think it's a great hat. But I do agree that not just anyone could pull it off. Aretha looked great in it IMHO.

OMG, I'm about to wet myself looking at those pics! :rotfl: I think this may be my personal favorite. LOVE the strategically-placed "mini hat."

I joined that also. They are some of the funniest photo-shopped pics I've ever seen. Some people are so talented (especially the creator of the mini-hat above!)
