A man on Jazz Air, a regional airline in Canada that also serves U.S. cities, was reportedly kicked off a plane earlier this month because of his strong body odor.

Generally, airlines may do this. The word "malodorous" may be found in some airlines' contracts of carriage.

Personally I think the airlines are more justified in doing this than removing people because they are of a large size. One can control or at least limit his/her body oder by washing and using deodorant whereas large people can't so easily or quickly change their size.

Smells (body odors or even strong perfumes) make me extremely ill. I am very sensitive to smells.

I agree about the odors and perfumes. I always hope that I don't sit by someone wearing strong perfume or aftershave. It gives me a miagrain and makes me sick.

I don't have issues with this (or the weight/size limits - actually I think it should be more controlled - you must fit within the frame of the seat and not spill over to your neighbors).

Considering the aroma of some people I have had the "pleasure" of flying next to, I hate to even imagine how bad this person must have smelled!!! Wow.

I can recall a flight from ORD once where the breath of the person sitting next to me was SO offensive that I spent the majority of the completely-full flight in the galley with the FA's. I kindly offered the offender (as well as the other row-mate) gum and mints prior to departure and several times thereafter.

I was on a YEG-DEN flight on United once where they removed a passenger for body odor from first class after the flight attendant actually vomited from the smell.

I will say this, they were incredibly discreet about the whole thing and if you weren't actually watching it happen, you probably didn't notice. Although it is probably easier to be discreet removing someone from Row 2 than Row 22.

Wish they had done this on one of my flights...I think Portland to Dallas or Portland to Denver. The guy absolutely REEKED! Especially his feet, and he tried to take off his shoes twice. I put a stop to that...basically told him that he reeked, especially his feet (very dirty socks) and could NOT have his shoes off.

There was an episode of Airline where the SW agents (I know, that horrible airline ) encountered a man with the same problem, they got him before he boarded though, gave him some SW khakis and a shirt and got him to wash and change clothes before boarding. He was in bad shape, it was sad really.

I would like to say "thank you" to the airline on behalf off all of us that have had to sit next to this "problem" in the past.

I'm not here to defend Kevin Smith but somehow you think by calling him a c-list actor negates his issue or how he handled it. As if there was some conspiracy here??? Please. No doubt he took advantage of his far reaching voice. Isn't this what people like Oprah do all the time? You just don't like the message this time. Between this and the posts on the other threads about this issue, I have never seen so many condescending attitudes. Good thing they don't kick people off flights for arrogance.

Well I am certainly not a fan of Oprah, nor of this 'gentleman' based on what I have read in past days.

I am however a fan of taking responsibility for oneself, and not imposing on others. In DISworld this apparently makes one a bad person, but in RealWorld those are actually positive things.

It's funny how many people are saying that airlines should make the seats bigger because Americans are getting bigger. I have to just shake my head. Sure the latter is true, but it's bypassing the responsibility issue. If you want a bigger seat, buy a first class ticket, but wait, you don't want to pay the price, fine, but what do you think would happen if the airline made seats bigger, it would mean there would be less seats and a direct result is the price of each seat would need to go up. On a 50 passenger RJ, the loss of just 4 seats would decrease the available seats by 8%, meaning there would need to be a correlated increase. If you spread that across the whole plane, you're looking at a minimum of 8%, even more if you focus the increase just on those rows. An even better option is to put the responsibility to LOSE weight back on the people.

I also find it funny how many people think they're not obese, but are 30 - 50 pounds overweight, which most likely makes them obese, sure not morbidly obese, but obese all the same. On Dis people like to relabel this as "pooh sized", but unfortunately, Pooh is obese.

I agree. I am also a fan of being accountable for oneself. But, these posts have been very snooty and snarky to say the least. As if the issue of one's feelings are secondary to someone's comfort. Certainly, in extreme cases, I get it. But there has been an extreme lack of tolerance on this board which is sad to see.

On a side note, I find it very curious how people who are obviously big fans of WDW and who frequent oft-crowded parks can have such an intolerance of their fellow WDW fans. The spirit of Walt lives... Maybe if they put a sign on the door of the plane saying "Peter Pan's Flight", people wouldn't mind being jammed into their seats like they are on the ride line.

This thread has nothing to do with Kevin Smith.

That said it's interesting to see how even a C list actor can generate a lot more publicity then an unknown passenger on a little known (in the United States) airline.


A lot of the hostility toward Mr. Smith is from people who don't like his obscenity filled tirades. The GA made a mistake in letting him board an earlier flight. Tried to do him a favor. Mr. Smith is the person who generated the publicity. Absent Mr. Smiths blogs/twitters maybe a half dozen SW passengers would have known he was deplaned. My issue is with a passener that "games" the system but then complains when it doesn't work for him.

I may not have been reading the same threads. I know one poster said that she herself purchases or would purchase an extra seat due to size. I said that I purchase upgrades because of my personal desire for space due to claustrophobia and physical issues.

There is one poster I know has displayed some intolerance in past and I have read some very ugly things here in past, but I didn't see that on the recent threads. However, I did notice that the moderator edited at least one post, so perhaps I did miss something.

I actually thought that THIS thread was ironic because in some parts of the world 'Westerners' who drink milk and eat dairy are the ones who are considered to have an offensive odour.
