Slow around here?

I think a part of it is that the more "interesting" discussions end up getting locked or deleted, so people gravitate towards other platforms where they can discuss topics that are restricted on here. It's boring to see all of the recent threads being akin to "What color is your friend's cousin's brother's coworker's mother's car?" At the same time, certain topics bring out the worst from all sides so it's best not to bring that up on a Disney board.

Just think how few topics there would be, at lest here on the community board if the few prolific posters didn’t post the random threads.
Just think how many topics there would be if certain threads/topics didn't get locked or go "poof". Moderate the individual posts/posters when they cross the line, don't punish everyone by outlawing topics.

Too many other options out there now. 10 years ago I would log on in the morning (on the West Coast) and have 4 or 5 pages of new threads that day on the Community Board. Just now I checked, and the new threads only fill about 2/3 of the first page.
And the attitude of posters has changed.
This is what it says at the top of the forum: "Join our moderators in a discussion forum for any topic, Disney or otherwise. Swap stories, information, ask questions...just be friendly."
Some seem to take offense if any attempt is made to discuss anything. They seem to think if a reply isn't "I agree with you" it doesn't belong. Kind of a boring discussion if we all have the same view.

I think some have tired of the endless threads by a small group about completely inane topics.
I know that's a frequently pointed out thing but I'm not sure that would push someone who is vested enough in the DIS to move on when the more easy route is to just put that particular poster on ignore which then hides all those threads. I think what could influence people is that if/when that happens then the threads leftover are few and far between in part due to past moderation of the threads that would exist.

I'm thinking back to when I joined 8 years ago there probably would have been more drowning out of those inane threads as new threads would pop up more quickly and less threads were super heavy handed in moderation, there was def. a time where threads were locked or deleted frequently enough mostly in the CB such that yeah you'd be left with less to find something to talk about. We're still probably in that time where even if you ignore a poster due to their particular thread creation patterns there's less to talk about. I think this is more evident on the CB not so much on other parts of the DIS if talking about what you are.

Having had to sit through hours and hours of seminars in my career on what kind of posts/topics generate healthy discussion online, it has been frustrating.
Especially on the Cruise Line forum, the now canceled ban on Covid discussion was very much out of place when cruising resumed. It was critical information people needed to plan their cruise in a pandemic.

They always made the allowance for travel related discussion with the ban. I saw plenty of conversation about covid on the cruise side as well as the attractions and strategies board but I will agree sometimes you'd think the topic was on par with discussing travel related and then see it was an issue.

Most of the time if there was an issue though it would be because people would interject their own personal opinions into it. Such as discussing if someone should or shouldn't wear a mask. Whether a mask was required by the cruise line or the park or the airport even and if when it was required was always an allowed topic but then getting into endless debates over people asking if they should wear one could drive a thread to be locked or deleted. Discussing needing to upload proof of vaccination was always allowed but then diverting into the merits of getting vaccinated was usually the issue.

I've done that with the several prolific questioners. With them on ignore, page 1 usually is maybe 8-15 threads short all the time, page 2, a bit less, maybe 6-8 short. New daily visible posts to me are usually a little less than page 1 to maybe page 1 and a few on page 2. Over the 24 plus years I've been here, there has always been some posters who post like that. But with 7-8 pages of daily postings "back in the day", they were pretty much lost in the shuffle. Today, with so few daily postings from fewer posters, those inane type threads can be overwhelming. But at least with ignore, not there to be seen.

Also, "back then", there were 6 visible moderator type people on the CB. We all started a lot of new threads to create interest and encourage new discussions. 2001 disboards line-up, including CB It was pretty vibrant then.

It's so interesting to hear the level of engagement from moderators way back when. I've said it before about ryan (rteetz) he was a great moderator and in part because of his level of engagement on the DIS. I know a tad harder on the Community Board to do so. I bet the early 2000s were quite the time here on the DIS. I still had dial up internet back then 😁

Since you joined, OP in May, of this year......I haven't seen much of a change in these past 5 months. :)

Unless you are an older poster using a new username ??

Very true on all accounts. And yes, Ryan was great there on his forum. I think it was somewhat easier on the CB, no topic guidelines.

I'm tired of the fluff-type threads being called inane. I'm not talking about the poster I have on ignore who posts a question and then never participates in their own thread. I'm talking about the song threads and the polls and the chit-chat type threads. They're fun, harmless, and have never, ever stopped a poster from starting a 'serious' thread-and when serious threads are started, they get lots of traction. If more serious topics aren't being discussed, don't blame the fluff threads for drowning them out.

Hey! I just asked whether chili was a soup or a stew, are you saying I'm not interesting?

I'd enjoy seeing more threads on "hot topics." I've seen threads get locked or go poof for reason I don't understand because it seems that there were no reason for them to be. But I also don't mind the random fluff threads because they are entertaining.

My thoughts on this are……

If you don‘t like threads like mine, that’s ok, they aren’t for everyone. Don’t complain about them, post your own thread(s) about topics you‘d like to discuss. If you aren’t posting, then don’t complain about the CB being slow, because it’s non-posters that contribute to the slowness. If you don’t like posting threads, that’s ok, just don’t complain about the ones that do. And if it really bothers you that people like me post inane, silly and mindless threads, then feel free to hit the ignore button - I won’t be offended.

The topics I'd like to see discussed are one that aren't allowed. No one is saying you shouldn't post your threads. They're not my style, so I don't read them. I'd just rather see more "controversial" threads than "fluff" threads.

I think those threads are different BSH. Those threads always have regulars who start them....and then participate. So I say...have at it!. The other threads...are started by someone who never participates. My theory is that it's one or more of the mods....that start those threads to keep the board "moving" so to speak. Otherwise it makes no sense.

If I had to guess, I’d say no one is referring to your posts. You participate in your threads and they are very different day to day. I think they’re referring to the ‘if you were a dog, what would you do all day’ type posts.

To me, it feels like a lot of the fun has left this place. We used to have threads that were actual conversations because they were happening so quick. I can remember threads where I was bent over from laughing so hard. It feels way too managed now, if that makes sense.

Traffic took a hit when the original Debates Board perished, but possibly in a good way! It shrunk again when all political and religious posts were banned. Since then I've noticed a slight decrease in traffic as most social media popped over to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, et al.

The biggest difference with your contributions versus some of the others - you actually take the time to generate a topic which draws engagement from the community and includes your participation in a thoughtful way.

Some of the others seem to be manufactured to just draw attention to themselves …
