Today’s topic is going to be a blast from the past for many of us. My DH and I have discussed in the past about how we’ve experienced almost every way to listen to music - records, 8 Track Tapes, Cassette Tapes, Compact Discs and now mobile or streaming. The only thing we didn’t experience was phonographs - I think that’s pretty cool and I know many of you are the same as us, in regards to listening to music. Today we are only discussing 8 Track Players and Tapes, which I have fond memories listening to when I was a kid. For our DIS friends that don’t know what 8 Track Tapes are, here’s an explanation….

This mentions about not being able to rewind, but I think I remember being able to move forward to each of the 4 programs. Am I right with this? It’s been such a long time and I was probably around 10 years old when I had my 8 Track Player. Now, you need to go back in time and let us know about your 8 Track experience. Give us your vintage music answer today……..

Did you have an 8 Track Player?
Did you have 8 Track Tapes?
If yes….how many?
Do you still have an 8 Track Player?
(multiple choice)

*Please share which 8 Track Tapes you remember having.

For Me……I had my own player in my bedroom and if I’m remembering correctly, I had about 6-8 tapes. I don’t remember all of them, but I do know I had a Best of the Village People, The Muppet Movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks, a Christmas one, and some Disney ones. My favorite one was probably The Muppet Movie one - I have very vivid memories of listening to that one a lot.

Is there an option for "had my own player, but not my own tapes"? :scratchin

At one point as a teen, I did technically have an 8-track player in my room, because it was part of a stereo that also had a record player in it, back when such things were furniture.

Said stereo had previously been in our living room, but after a move, I got it because the new living room was configured differently and there wasn't a spot for it, but it did fit in my new room. :teeth:

I had records that I played on it, but I don't think I actually bought any of my own tapes. (My Mom had a smaller 8-track player in the kitchen, so I could borrow her tapes if I wanted.)

I was too young to own my own. My parents were vinyl people and didn’t buy an 8 track. I keep asking for their vinyl collection!

I guess I skipped the rather short-lived 8-track time, like Kitty above, going from records to cassettes. And like Kitty, still have my LP's, several hundred, many classics from the 50's-early 70's.

My parents had one and they had several tapes and remember they had one in a car we had I believe I had a few tapes but I do remember listening to a tracks when I was a kid I pretty much started buying vinyl and had a worker player in my room I still have all my vinyl all my cassettes all my CDs and I have a system that’ll apply all of those but I do not have any 8 tracks but I do remember them and I do remember listening to him as a kid I am glad that vinyl made a comeback I enjoy that so much but I enjoy storing CDs so much better🤣🤣

We had one in our car in the 70’s.

The car even came with a bonus 8 track tape with unknown artists singing unknown songs. We played it constantly and I still sing most of those songs in my head on a regular basis. lol.

I'm another one who went from records to cassette, by-passed the 8-Track completely. I never thought tapes were superior to records but they were portable, fun, and you could make your own mix tapes.

I don't recall my parents ever having 8-track tapes, but they might have. My parents did have one of those huge stereo cabinets with the turntable and radio under the lift up top.

Yes, I had two of them, one built in as part of a larger stereo system and one portable one that could run on electric or batteries. I still have the portable one. I was pretty young and got in to the tail end of 8-tracks so I only had a few, maybe six of them. Not sure if I still have the tapes even though I have the player. I didn’t get into cassettes much either. I sort of went from primarily vinyl (which I still have) to CDs.

@slo I know I could fast forward on my portable player. You could select the track and then fast forward to get close to a favorite song. I don’t think my other player did that though.

Nope, neither I nor my family ever had an 8-track (player or tapes). We had a record player or 2, maybe 3, and lots of vinyl records. Then shifted into tape cassettes.

I never had any 8 track cartridges or a player, but friends did and I do remember, the “clunk” and songs being interrupted for about five seconds when the track changed.

Not for 8 tracks, but when I bought a turntable circa 1978 it came with an album of crappy songs by some unknown artist. I listened once or twice then the album sat wedged in the milk crate for a fee years before I threw it away.

Was there storage for record albums somewhere? My parents had a huge unit but with sliding top panels instead of lifting ones. On one side there was a space to store both albums and 45 rpm singles. The turntable played 33, 45, and even
old 78 rpm records.

I forget, but I think underneath was where the storage was. Had to have plenty of space for all my mom's Barry Manilow and Paul Anka LPs ;)

I had an 8 track record player in my bedroom in elementary school. My sister had one in her Caprice. She had a cassette converter for it so we mostly listened to tapes.
