Have you checked campground prices??? I looked at my AllStar Sports reservation and it is less per night than a Ft Wilderness full hookup campsite. Add the cost of an RV (comparing bathroom to bathroom) ... def not a poor man's way to travel.
No, but in the mid-1970's when I was in College we used to stay at the Anaheim KOA, which was where the Mickey and Friends parking structure is now. I don't remember what it cost, but we would drive 400 miles each way, spend 3 days in Disneyland, pay for the camping spot, all food, admissions, gasoline for $100 each.

I don't camp or glamp. I prefer to stay in a cabin in the woods (one with a nice bathroom and kitchen).

We have a fifth wheel. Not large, and not small, sort of medium to smallish. We did tent camping for a number of years, and decided when we retired that sleeping on the ground was no longer an option. We belong to a club that goes "somewhere" every other month and we've taken several long (3-4 months) trips in recent years.

Now, I don't really classify what we do now with an RV as "camping", but when we did tent camping it was.

When I was a boy scout, sure, lots of camping. Worked at the Boy Scout camp for a season as a counselor as well. As an adult, nope.

No, no, no to camping. Maybe if I had an RV, but walking through the woods to the bathroom in the middle of the night is not my idea of fun.

My idea of camping has always been the ice machine on our hotel floor is out of service. And the TV remote doesn't work.

Whenever somebody asks me if I'd like to go camping, I tell them, "No thanks, I'm allergic."

Allergic to camping, that is.

I pretty much absolutely and totally hate it. I find none of the experience to be relaxing. It's full of work and a bunch of things that are either irritating or a royal pain in the butt. And at the end of the camping 'vacation,' you need an extra day off in order to catch up on all of the sleep you didn't get on the camping trip plus repack and store all of the gear you had to haul with you to the camping site.

I'd rather go to the dentist than go camping.
Perfectly said.

I’ve done them all — big tents, little backpack tents, motor homes, pop-ups…all seasons, even in snow.
But no more for this girl. Camping days are over. I’m a fussy sleeper in my old age. Gotta get my rest.

I used to love camping, although I don't do it anymore. I was in girl scouts and sea scouts in high school/early college and we went tent camping for long weekends at least twice a year. Think 8 person canvas round-up tents, mess tents with propane stoves, and outhouses. LOVED IT. I spent 3 summers as a counselor at resident Girl Scout camps and loved that, too. Also, my high school/college boyfriend (not DH) and I used to go camping basically on a whim, with a tent and my van, including a 2 week vacation to the Canadian Maritimes/PEI. It was AWESOME. Since then? Not so much. DH and I went camping a couple of times (we had a 2 or 3 person pop-up style tent by then) and DD and I took a road trip during which we alternated nights in the minivan and hotel nights. I really miss camping, but these old bones wouldn't do well with sleeping on the ground, or even with a sleeping pad. Now, I'd happily consider a travel trailer, RV, 5th wheeler, etc. (I always wanted one of those little square trailer things you'd pull behind the car, with the top that pops up and sides that wing out for sleeping) but we aren't there financially and don't have a vehicle that could tow such things. Besides... I am not sure I consider RV-ing/trailer life to be "real camping." Unfortunately, for me, my camping days are over, BTDT.

@HeatherC I hope you love your trip to the coast of Maine! We are staying in York (a block off the coast) for a week in August but are paying the stupid price for a cottage. Crazy prices, but not as crazy as WDW hotel rooms! Nobody comes with us, we make no plans, but it's our little piece of peace and sanity in the year. (I'd be interested in knowing the campgrounds you recommend, though... this thread has started up my "itch" to camp again- at 68??? AmICrazy????)

I've only been camping once. I loved the setting, but didn't get much sleep!

I would go again in the right circumstances (which includes an RV toilet/toilet block!!).

So, I would have voted 'other', I guess.

I love Fort Wilderness and am pretty sad they're changing out the old pioneer-style brown log cabins for very unnatural, in-your-face multi-colored versions. ...What are they thinking? :sad2:
r.e. bold -- NEW Cabins = DVC CAMPING RESORT :duck:

I have to admit, as crazy as hotel rates are now, I might consider camping, but it isn't something I currently do.

When we started RVing at WDW - FW ('80's) our site would cost $39.00/night. Now our September Vaca. stay would be $137.00+/night and our Dec. stay $230.00+/night

Since we sold the MH, our *CAMPING* is on a Cruise Ship with BUTLER service 24hrs./day :teeth:
