Skipping Stingray City b/c I am afraid?

I have ZERO desire to have those things flapping all around me in the water. Not "afraid" so much as just creeped out by them.

Like sharks, I love watching them... but I do not want to interact with them.

I did it over 20 years ago----as a storm was coming in. The water was rough; no one could stand. I got in for the photo op. and then got out. they were huge! We just got off the Fantasy and totally enjoyed the Sea Trek! My 9 year old LOVED it!

As a family that loves the water, we have done Stingray City 3 times. The first time I just jumped right in and I was proud that DW was right behind me until something brushed her leg and then she was on my back( a surprise to me). but after a short time, she was even feeding them(which was allowed back then). Our last trip was a first for my DD 7 at the time. She would not get into the water at first, I had to carry her. once she held her first stingray she was hooked and I couldn't get her out of the water. So I would say try it, another way to experience the wonders of our oceans.IMG_0042.JPG

There are definitely other things to do beside stingrays. If you feel like your family wants to see them and you do not, you can always just wait on the boat and watch too. I don't blame you for being afraid of them. You are in their home no one can predict what will happen.

I wouldn't be worried about skipping it if you don't like stingrays. But honestly, I thought it was really magical. My girlfriend wasn't sure at first when she got in, but by the end she was having a really good time, she even fed them. We went in Feb of this year, was water was super clear and it wasn't just stingrays by the way there were lots of tiny fish swimming around us too :)

It has to be what you are comfortable with. I myself have always loved being in the water. Stingray experience at CC is not even close in my opinion.

Thanks @OurOhana ! You don't think that substituting the stingray experience on CC comes close?
Not close at all! We did the sandbar last year on Grand cayman with a then 5 and 8 year old. We all had a great time and are looking forward to a trip to Grand Cayman on its own.

The experience is def not like what you have at castaway. Totally different. Google some videos and photos to compare.

We did this in Grand Cayman and it is one of the hightlights of my life -- especially because I don't swim and don't like being out in deep water. But we were on a sand bar and they came to us. I was never afraid and we were all amazing -- I even fed one and they are so gentle and graceful. Didn't find out until later that my daughter was terrified the whole time -- but also awed and excited. She even went underwater to take pictures, but never let on she was scared. She says now though that she is so proud she did it.

I love the water and being in it.

I am creeped out by sting rays. Especially if they are flapping all around me and could even jump up on my back like I've seen a picture.

It is possible to feel both of those ways.

There was one who was just "in love" with my DH. She kept coming around and using one of her wings to rub across his back -- several times. He said she was very soft underneath and very gentle.

I throughly enjoyed my experience among the stingrays, so I have no way of understanding WHY they creep you out, but I DO understand why you don't want to be among them. I am totally freaked out by spiders, so I can relate. It would be very, very hard for someone to convince me that it would be fun to be surrounded by a lot of "harmless" spiders.

Stingrays scare me!!! One of the handlers made it squirt water at me once (this was in Jamaica) and I freaked out and cried. haha I say skip it!

We decided not to do stingray city because I am slightly afraid of them. We booked a day pass at the Westin Grand Cayman instead.

DH wants all three of us to skip it. All he can think of is Steve Irwin. There are plenty of other things to do.

We did the reef and wreck snorkel. Which was great. We had lunch at Magaretteville after and did some shopping.

But there is a lot to do on GC. I don't think you can go wrong with just chilling on the beach. Enjoy!

PS. I had no desire to swim with Stingrays and neither did my sons. Middle guy did the Stingrays at ️CC with Dad. He was 10 at the time.
