SkIpPiNg SkOoL fOr FrEe DiNiNg!!! (Update Sept 20 ~ 1 more day!)

Hi Amy! Just stopping by to agree with all the others - great job on your ADR!! I know you all will love Ohana's. When Mike and I went to our business convention in January, I made a dinner reservation there. We arrived early so that we could roam around the resort - as it is one of my favorites and perhaps one day I will stay there.

Hi Ellen!
I think we will go early to look at the resort. I've never been to the Poly before, but I know I would LOVE to stay there one day too!

Amy, all caught up again! Looks like your plans are really coming together. Some really good ADRs. Congrats on scoring T-Rex!

One of my best friends and her family is going to WDW the week of Oct 14th. We will be out of school that Thursday & Friday.
Since 2010, we were orginally going to WDW together that week since we would only be taking the kids out of school for 3 days instead of 5.
I tracked the boards last year to see if any specials, such as free dining, were offered for that time frame.
If there were any specials, I never saw any. No free dining or room discount or anything.
When we started making our plans this year for WDW, I was scheduled to teach a class during the October week we were going.
There was only one week this fall that I was not scheduled to teach & that is the week of Sept 23rd.
I thought that would be even better because of Free Dining, but then I would have to take my kids out of school for 5 days.

I stressed for weeks trying to decide what to do. :confused3

October positives:
- Kids only miss 3 days vs 5.
- our friends will be there
October negatives:
- No discounts
- I should be working

September positives:
- Free Dining = HUGE discount
- No class scheduled for me to teach so I can be off
September negatives:
- Kids are supposed to be at school, so they will miss 5 days vs 3
- Going with just our family, which we really do enjoy, so this could be listed as a positive also!

As you know, Sept won and that's where my PTR title comes in.
I tried my best to get my friend & her family to come over to dark side with us, skip school & go to WDW in Sept with Free Dining. She would've saved over $1,000. But I could not convince her to miss two more days. :guilty:

I've talked with a couple of other parents whose children have missed a week at our school for WDW & it was no problem.
It had not been a problem in Elementary school for us, so I'm glad to hear that our Middle School is Disney friendly too! :earsboy:

I just love going in the fall with no crowds! :lovestruc

Hi Amy! Glad to see you have a new PTR. The twins have really grown up. Congrats to Lexi! Thanks (to you and one of your PP) for the advice to call T-Rex!
I wish that we could take the kids out of school for longer than 2 days, but that is the max DH would go for. We had to camp out to get admission to this school, and the current policy is that they can be kicked out for more than 12? tardies or unexcused absences. Our school districts are also in the process of merging, so no one is really sure how things are going to progress but we just dont want to risk losing this school. Anyway, i can't wait to read more!

It's super rare for me to check out the PTR board, but I'm so glad I did today. I'm so excited that your family is headed back to WDW! :yay: I couldn't help but laugh at the super cute title you gave this, btw. Skipping school definitely looks like a better way to go and your plans seem great so far. :thumbsup2

I loved reading your TR and can't wait to see another. Happy planning!

Thanks for joining! I'm glad you were able to find out about calling T-Rex.
I tell Brad that our WDW wouldn't run so smoothly if it wasn't for reading the Dis!
I understand totally about the school. You always want your kids in the best school possible & you don't want to mess that up since you have your kids in one that you like.
Our school policy is that you can not have more that 10 unexcused absences. My kids are never sick or absence so hopefully that will continue and they will not get sick next year! :)
My friends kids do get sick a lot, so that's why she was afraid to miss 5 days.

Hey girl! I'm glad you did visit the PTR board!
Making a trip title stressing me out. You've got it made just keeping one long TR! :rotfl:

At our school, tardies fall into the same bucket as unexcused absences. My kids don't get sick a lot, but she does have a few tardies. there have been numerous occasions where our 12 minute drive is stretched to 25 due to a random train! plus leaving early for the doctor who wont take an appointment past 2 or on the weekends is a tardy etc. I wish they didn't count, because i'd surely have them out a week too!

So glad that you decided to let the kids skip school again to go to Disney! We're "those parents" too, but I don't care. You only live once and family time is very important to us. My DH works a lot of hours, so it's nice to have a whole week together. Madison will be missing 6 days of school again for our Sept trip (that's what happens when you go Tuesday-Tuesday!), but her teachers have never given us trouble. She's a very bright little girl and always does her homework on the plane on the way down!

i am one of those parents that takes the kids out of school, so another couple days to me isnt as big of deal... in fact, i have yet to really look at how many days dd is going to miss in the fall when we go. I think probably a week

I remember last trip in 2010 both of our kids where out of school then too!
Lexi & Levi get all of their schoolwork done on the way down, then we don't have to worry about it anymore.
Our teachers in past have always been great too.

I love going while school is in & there is low crowds!

I just found your PTR today so I am joining in! Your kiddos are gorgeous! I can't wait to read along with your planning adventures!

Hi Amy :wave2:

Was so excited to find this :) A big congrats to Lexi-she looked stunning. I will have to show the girls her pics. We love going in Sep but are celebrating my Hubby's bday in Oct this time around. Can't wait to follow along.

Hi Mary! Glad to have you here :goodvibes
What are you doing to celebrate your DH birthday?

hi Amy! So glad to see you are doing another PTR! And happy to see other familiar faces as well (hi Ann!). The funny thing is...I had priced out a free dining trip for Sept. as well, and I really want to go. Initially it was for over labor day weekend, but that weekend is my sister's due date (she's pregnant with her first, a baby girl and the first grandchild for my parents) so didn't want to potentially miss my neice being born! So we're maybe thinking of moving it to the end of Sept. Hopefully our days will overlap as it'll be great to meet up! It sounds as if I'm coming in late to the game though, and all the good ADRs will be gone  by the time I get around to booking. Just wish I can confirm my dates a bit more. Plus I really wanted to stay at POFQ too! But I was reading about the new refurbished rooms at Riverside - the ones with the Royal theme and I thought that would be cool to see as well.

So happy for Lexi! she totally deserved that crown! I saw your pics on FB and thought she was the prettiest contestent, so there was no doubt in my mind she would have won. :)

Looking forward to the rest of the PTR!

Congratulations! Which sister is it, one of the twins? I am so excited for your family. I know I will be seeing a ton of adorable baby pictures on your FB starting in September & I can't wait to see them!

That would be so cool if you made it in September, especially if you are at POFQ!
Hopefully, you are not too late to get all the dining reservations that you want. You will just have to stalk the online dining reservation site everyday until you get them! :upsidedow

Thanks so much!

Looking forward to the rest of the PTR!

I hope you write a PTR, if you book one! :)

Hi ! Joining in a little late. Just found your PTR. We are going in in September as well, bridging the free dining with Food and Wine Fesival. Our kids are gonna miss 5 days of school too!! We were originally going around Columbus Day weekend but the free dining was too good to pass up!

I think you will like T-Rex a lot! We were surprised by the yum factor of the food there. Glad you called direct. Don't ya just love the DISboards?! :thumbsup2

Have you tried to change back to the Pop? Just out of curiousity...

When I first booked free dining for just a few days farther into September than your trip, we booked Pop. I just called and changed it to Art of Animation a few days ago cus they included it on the free dining offer... same thing as you with Pop. When I first booked, it listed Art of Animation as excluded from the offer. Maybe they are slowly releasing the more in demand hotels, hoping to fill up the harder to fill ones first? Who knows!

Can't wait to read more of your plans!

Hey! I'm glad you joined in. I love reading other people's PTR/TR that are going at the same time. I see you have a PTR, so I will come over get started on it! :goodvibes
Free dining is too good to pass up. I would rather save close to $1000 & miss school! ;)

I have thought about retrying for Pop or even trying for AoA, but I also now have the mindset of POFQ & I'm excited about staying there. So, who knows :confused3 Too many choices, I would love to stay at all of the resorts!

Can't wait to read more of your plans!
