Skipper Canteen ADR Watch

My only beef with Disney recently is the SLOW TRICKLE OF INFORMATION. They can and should do whatever they think is best for business. But when they announce something, they should include more details.
That's us not them. We're the ones sitting here watching this thread minute by minute. Having to make public the menus, operating hours, and policies, and have all the technical ducks in the row, six months before the restaurant is open is unreasonable. We may feel that making ADRs six months in advance is unreasonable (and many Disney guests do) but I prefer it. The alternative is a mad rush for ADRs 30 or 14 days prior, with a lot more competition because a much greater percentage of guests will have made their plans to visit Disney by then. So I'm happy enough to have the detailed information trickle in and while still having that 180 day advantage over people who book their vacations later than we do.

Disagree. I don't need EVERY DETAIL. And I don't mind making ADRs 180 days out. But if that's the expectation, created BY DISNEY, then we should have info sooner in order to make those ADRs.

If 180 days out isn't reasonable for a new opening, fine! What is reasonable? The place is OPEN now!! Do they REALLY still not know when/if ADRs will open?? I think this is ridiculous.

Same issue with SWW. Same issue with Season of the Force. They're beginning to give the impression that they are planning mere minutes out! Or that they really don't care much about how difficult they make it for guests -- particularly DVC members -- to plan their trips. We've been going multiple times a year for ages. On this front, they seem to be worse these days. It's a bit much, IMHO.

I think the point is that Disney doesn't MAKE you make ADRs 180 days out. It's that you are able to make them starting at 180 days out.

They don't MAKE YOU... They just strongly suggest... And with some restaurants that's the ONLY way to eat there.

They should do better on this front.

Call me crazy, but I'm kind of glad that there is at least one restaurant where you can just walk up and wait, or get a text, and you get to eat. Many people aren't planners just want to wing it. If you book a last minute trip, there just aren't many dining options. I like this.

Good point about the last minute trips!

From DIS Unplugged facebook page "Skipper Canteen is now open at the Magic Kingdom. Some info - this will be the first restaurant on property to NOT accept ADR's - they are going to test out accepting walk-up only. 2nd - they will NOT be accepting Tables in Wonderland here. We'll have a full review up on the site later tonight."

They may not take them through the hoildays.. However I highly doubt they keep to walk up only..
Also it has been confirmed they will be accepting TIW..

Looks like Jungle Navigation Skipper Canteen is now showing up in the reservation page on the Disney website. However, dates are still greyed out.

They have removed the "reservations accepted" statement and the reservation widgit from the page. It also still says that dining plans are not accepted. I still can't imagine that they will keep this as a walk up forever as their whole philosophy has been to make it so that people can AVOID waiting in lines and can be spending money elsewhere in the park. Even if they are doing the cell phone buzzer system, people will be lining up when it first opens to get added to the list...but maybe Disney has the metrics showing otherwise.

I hope they have another method of notifying guests when they have a table ready. As I mentioned in the other thread, we are from Canada and the text notification system for when your resort room is ready has never worked for us. A CM told us it's only for US text numbers. Makes me wonder if the same would be true for the restaurant (if they could/would do it for a restaurant, why not the resorts?)

Another Canadian here...same issue with the text notifications. What we have them do at resort check-in is send the room ready notification as an email instead. Not as easy as a text but better than nothing. Maybe they will offer the same for Skipper Canteen?

Yes, unfortunately Disney is making assumptions about what technology everyone will have with them. The folks that don't have a device to access the app in the park for example are at a disadvantage, so I would be curious to see what they would do dining wise for people who can't receive text messages. More kiosks in the park that you have to check to see your status? Personally I would prefer it if they allowed say 75% of the reservations to be ADR and hold back 25% for day of walk ins or reservations. Then you allow some people to plan and others to be more spontaneous...

Well with the reservation widget being gone, that makes it pretty official. I have a meeting to gather with my 18 people group. We now have to figure out where we're gonna eat *instead* of this place.

Agreed. The only thing I would say is that based on their track record, especially recently, they might change that back TOMORROW!! You never know.... "subject to change" is perhaps more true with Disney than anything else!! Make sure that you PERPETUALLY "stay tuned to Disney Parks Blog for more information!!!" ;)

The widget only takes one click to delete and one click to add, so we don't know for sure the long term plan.
But it was removed from the "takes reservations" filter as well.

Interesting that they took the time to remove the widget but not to adjust the line that says "Dining Plans Not Accepted". I haven't seen any scream on here they refused their DDP but then I was able to use TiW. Got to love the fine print.

Yeah, guess we'll see in the new year if anything changes. It's possible they're holding to this during the holiday rush. Who knows... I mean at this point, I don't have any good places to book 18 people this close to our vacation in Feb/Mar ( For the day I had reserved for this, don't worry, I know to have booked all other days way in advance ). So I guess we'll wait and see...

The same aplies to me. Since I am from abroad (Europe) and I am not willing to buy a US-SIM-Card for my cell phone for a week of stay.... And there are more than just one international group at WDW. I really hope they have some kind of pager or other methods of notification.

My daughter stopped by there today but didn't eat (we already had reservations at Liberty Tree Tavern). We did talk to a cast member though and she said they are only taking walk ups as of right now using the text notification system. They were also still out of cups as of this morning and had actually printed up new menus that don't show pictures of the cups, so there are less disappointed guests.

There will be NO ADR just so you know. JSC is the first of it's kind disney has (BRG isn't disney) that will only take walk-ups. they're testing this out for future restaurants but as a CM, i can tell you this isn't going to work. So don't fret, just plan one day without reservations and go in and try to get a seat. the new text feature is pretty awesome because even if they tell you it's a 2 hour wait, you can at least go ride a few rides then come back!
