Skating Rink Songs

The one I remember being played all the time was "Cocaine" pretty inappropriate, but they played it constantly.

Skating rink songs, I was fortunate or unfortunate however you look at it to catch the tail end of the Disco movement. I can rembember skating to Ami Stewart's Knock on Wood so well. Some others were various Village People, Bee Gees, Funkytown and Elo's Don't bring me down.

This makes me want to break out the velour shirt with the big collar and grab my skates with the blue and silver sparkle laces that would knot up so fierce once you had them laced.

"Micky" by Toni Basil (remember? in the video she was a cheerleader?...Oh Micky you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind...Hey Micky! circa 1982)

AE-AEIOU! And sometimes Y!

The top ones here in the mid 70s were the KC and the Sunshine Band ones (esp. That's the way I like It, Get Down Tonight, and I'm your Boogie Man) and Saturday Night --that song was perfect skating rhythm.

Wow I am really old because most of you are listing my Bar/Club songs from my single days! LOL

We had a tiny tiny skating rink & all I remember is Knock 3 Times on the ceiling....etc.....and I've got a Brand New pair of Roller Skates, you Got a Brand New Key. Oh and Put the Lime in the Coconut & drink it all up!

Rockin' Robin. Everytime I see a skating rink I think of that song.

"We Built This City" is by Starship. I have an album of theirs called "Ten Years and Change". :)

I remember my first pair of roller skates were white with big pink wheels and I had pink sparkle laces with the Barbie "B" logo on them. :) When I wasn't at the rink, I'd skate around on my grandmother's rather large concrete porch in her back yard.

God I miss those days. :-/

The one that brings back memories of middle school at the skating rink is "Slow Ride" by Thin Lizzie. Also "American Woman" by I-cant-think-of-who.

Now, my DD is in first grade and her elementary school has monthly skating parties- I feel old! The songs they feature now are "Cotton Eyed Joe"- not the traditional one, the dancey-rappy one from a few years ago, the old Village People song "YMCA", and lots of teeny bop Hilary Duff-type stuff I don't even know. "Hokey Pokey" is still going strong!

"American Woman" was originally done by Jimi Hendrix and then re-done for "Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me" by Lenny Kravitz.

Villianess- the "American Woman" I'm thinking of was done by a group- some of the lyrics are:

American Woman
stay away from me
American woman
Mama let me be
Stop hangin' around my door
Don't want to see your shadow no more
Colored lights can't hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes

It's bugging me that I can't remember who sings this!

If you think of it- let me know!

There's also a version of that song with those lyrics floating around done by the Guess Who. That's probably the one you're thinking of. Jimi Hendrix did it first though, I"m pretty sure of it.

disneyelaine -- I was thinking the very same thing! I remember those songs you listed as well--the Melanie (Roller Skate) song was certainly appropos for a skating rink, don't ya' think?

I thought of a couple of others as I was trying to sleep last night:

"Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", Hollies
"Get It On (Bang A Gong)", T Rex

Those always got people flying around the rink at sonic speed.

By the time "disco" Hit in earnest, I was 18 and hitting the discos in my polyester best! :earseek: No more time for those red wheel speed skates!

Oh What A Night (December 63) - The Four Seasons
