I was confused for part of the last episode. At one point it seemed all the women were not happy about Robyn but then the next they l loved her. It was strange
As I've often said that when something doesn't make sense, chances are you're not getting the whole story. This was a reality show created for dramatic purposes in order to sell advertising, so it stands to reason that they're only going to air the drama rather than the mundane. Of course it looks like they don't like Robyn one moment but then love her the next. That's the drama.
I don't feel I can judge these people's depth of affection (or lack thereof) for each other based on only seing them for six hours. No one can. I simply wish them well and hope they live happy lives. Anything else is really none of my business. It was an interesting show but it's not anything I'm going to invest too much emotion into.
This is what I have been thinking.
This show is a form of recruitment for polygamy and their religion.
I've been reading some other forums, one on the TLC site and one on Facebook. Seems like there are quite a few women out there who now think that this lifestyle is attractive. The show makes it look really good...
Charasmatic man with a gaggle of nice wives who all get along and live in a nice house and drive nice cars. No worries about a roof over your head, food on the table, help with the kids and chores. You even get to go on trips to Mexico and special date nights. Woohoo! This utopia is roping in women left right and center by offering them what they think is an easier life.
When I googled sister wives I even found a polygamous dating site where women were posting their profiles wanting into the lifestyle. The site itself said that they had received a record number of memberships in the past month.
Scary!
It seems a great many people in a great many organized religions show their lifestyle in a good light and try to recruit for their religion. Why should this be any different? Fundamentalist religions can do just as much harm, if not more so, than polygamy.
However, that doesn't stop those particular religions from trying to recruit so I'm going to give these guys and their religion a pass as well. If a girl wasn't brought up with the solid values that
mean something to her, then she's going to try other ways of finding meaning in her life and there's really no stopping her. She's going to find out for herself whether or not Pentecost, Buddhism, Atheism, LDS or whatever will fulfill her if she's looking for a meaning in life that has eluded her so far.
And the more people who try to tell her that she's going down the wrong path are strongly pushing her off that path, the more she's going to want to go down that particular path. If the people who've given her the wrong answers her whole life are so strongly against a specific religion or lifestyle, then there must be something to it that
she'll find right.
As for me, I found the show fascinating but I doubt there will be another season. It was an interesting six hours that gave me a glimpse into someone else's life and I'm grateful for the experience. I can't say that their lifestyle is a lifestyle that would work for me, but they seem to be happy with it, their children seem happy and they're not hurting anyone.
That's all that matters.
