Since when did BOOK COVERS become a requirement???

You know, we have to pay book rental. I'm thinking I'd rather cover the books instead.

They were required of my schools in the 80s.

We just used a paper bag. They were more durable than some of the store bought ones made at that time.

It is supposed to "protect" the book cover from damage/markings/tears.

I always buy the stretchy kind. It just slips right on to the book, no hassles. They are a bit pricey. I got them in Barnes and Noble for $4.99 each, buy two get one free.

I bought them at Target for 1.00 a piece and they were very trendy...not too cutsie.

Does that mean you actually get textbooks? Up here there are times when there are not enough textbooks to go around so most of their assignments are photocopied which ends up with reams and reams of loose paper and the occasional lost assignment ...

My niece colour co-ordinates all her notebooks with her textbooks - personally I love the idea but up here most boys use basic black binders ...

I always had to have my books covered--grade school and high school. It was to protect the original cover.

I used freezer wrap. The waxed coating seemed to help it hold up longer than the brown bag paper.

Follow the directions on the link to the website above...that is all there is to it.

For as long as I can remember when I went to school I was required to have my book covered. It wasnt my property so they wanted it to stay in decnt condition. My mom always did the brown bag book cover-we liked to write all over them when I was school. Haha.

Thanks for reminding me to save all of our bags for the next 2 weeks.....
I am totally NOT in back to school mode yet!!

I don't want summer to end!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to school in the 70's & 80's & always had to cover my books. My DD's still have to cover their books now.

They used to use the stretchy ones, but now they make their own covers with Abercrombie shopping bags & they make sure the male models are on the front of the book.

My kids used to have their books covered.

I normally bought a roll of brown shipping paper & used that (since most of our stores use plastic bags.

Set your book in the middle of the brown paper, make sure that there are about 2" of paper around the book (could be more - I used to like 4").

Crease the paper at each of the four ends of the open book, centering the book in the middle, so that there is a crease at the top & bottom, and at the ends of the book cover.

Fold the paper at the top & bottom creases.

Put the book in the middle, and bend the left or right crease of paper, then slip the book in.

Fold the paper over the book, & slip the other end of the book into the paper cover.

Had to cover our books through Junior High/High School. Our school district used the same text books for 10 years at a shot, so the covers helped them stay nice for the future students who needed them.

Our school supplied covers at the beginning of each semester. They were ok (had school logo on), but didn't fit well on the thicker books and didn't hold up as well. I usually just made my own out of brown paper bags. Those usually lasted forever.

We used Abercrombie bags as wall-paper in college. heheheh ;)

I always had to cover my books when I was in school years ago (I graduated in 1978). I used brown grocery bags.

When my kids were in school they always had to cover their books too.

I agree, I would much rather buy a couple of book covers than pay $300 in book rental every year. Indiana is one of the few states that has book rental, I wonder if our kids are the only ones who don't use book covers too.

my kids started doing this a couple of years ago.

I buy the stretchy covers.

I'm a grandmother - and as far back as elementary school we had to use book covers.. :confused3

We always had to cover books. Now we also get the stretchy ones. Walmart has them for less then a dollar $.79 if I remember correctly. We have reused them for several years. It does help keep the books in better shape. The only bad thing about the fabric covers is that you can't put a class label or a child's name on them.

:earseek: $300 in book rental?! Holy cow!
My text books have always had to be covered. Heck in elementary school we had to cover our paperback "Wordly Wise" vocab work books that we kept at the end of the year  It was a protective measure. No backpack is entirely waterproof, especially against the 6 inches of snow that I've had land on my backpack while waiting an hour for a late bus. The book covers absorb the moisture, so you just have to replace the cover instead of damaging the book. We always used brown paper bags from the grocery store. We always get the paper bags anyway, so it wasn't a hassle to get them. They work better than the rolls of paper that they sell for books. And those sticky covers have been outlawed in the schools, because they dont come off completely.
Some of my teachers in school gave detentions if the books weren't covered by a certain date. And if your book cover got wet in the snow or rain you better show up with it hanging off the book, and take it off the book after the teacher had seen what had happened. Books have to last 10-20 years in the schools I went to.

we had to have paper book covers for all our books when i was in high school in the early 90's.

In Germany it's the rule to cover the books using sturdy but inexpensive paper similar to gift wrapping paper. You buy it on a roll and one role is good for 20+ books. You can also get transparent plastic on a roll, printed paper with comic characters, filmstars, popstars, etc. It makes the books last longer and thus saves taxes. The condition of the book is noted when handed over from the library to the student and checked again upon return at the end of the schoolyear. If the wear of the book execeeds normal use the student, respectively the parents have to pay for it: i.e notes in the book, missing pages, etc.
