Since we're talking about TEXTING...

Dunno how much difference TXTing etiquette classes would make, given how ineffective regular etiquette, mail etiquette and telephone etiquette classes have had in the past. (In other words, TXTing is no difference than any other form of communication.)

Yup.

My wife and I are sitting next to each other IMing each other. This makes no noise, so it will not wake up my sister-in-law, sleeping in the next room, like our talking to each other would. :tiptoe:

My BF & I text a lot, more than we talk on the phone. Mainly because while my texting works great, my phone signal in the house is horrible and I can barely hear him and vice versa. Texts are just easier.

What do you think? Is it necessary?

I can't understand when DD uses 30 or 40 text messages to talk to a friend rather than picking up the phone. Am I the only one?

I see people texting when driving...causing traffic problems. I hear of kids who text all through class instead of paying attention to teachers...and parents who threaten the school with lawyers if they don't let the kids have their phones back. I've heard of text break-ups and all kinds of stuff that civilized people would never do.

Let's hear it. The good, the bad and the ugly. :hippie:
I text because it avoids going through a relay operator. It is a more direct form of communication for my friends (most of whom are deaf or hard of hearing) and I. Also with my husband, we will send short texts between classrooms as needed so as to not interrupt the learning enviroment or to keep our conversation private. We work in the same school but may be at opposite ends of the campus.pirate:

LOL! How old are some of you!! You sound like my grandparents did about the phone, then video games, then walkmans etc..! "These kids these days....!":lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
I'm 60 and use text more then talking on the phone. I am also hard of hearing and texting in the deaf community is the norm as it avoids relay operators

I hate having to call someone to tell them one little thing. Then you have to make small talk, etc. I like just telling them what needs to be said. I also would rather have a conversation over text (unless it's particularly complex). Then I can do anything else I want at the same time. I'm a multi-tasker, and I hate being tied to the phone.

I'm sure kids are texting instead of paying attention in class. I doubt they would be paying attention anyway. Even though I didn't have texting in high school, I used to pass notes, do other homework, read, basically anything else because I was bored.

Parents need to teach their children etiquette with using the phone (texting or talking) just like anything else.

How about my dd15 who not only talks to her BF on her cell, but is texting him at the same time???? What cracks me up is that she will have him on speaker phone and he will text her and it sound like he is texting a book and then one little word will come across.

My dd texts all the time. Alot of times its because she doesn't want to be heard by others, mostly its to keep in touch with friends in Ohio. But she will text a friend when they are sitting right next to each other, especially in the car.

Also when she has something on her mind we will "talk" it out thru text, or start and then I know to go talk to her in person.

I have no problem with her texting for the most part. The only time I have an issue is when she has invited someone over and is texting someone else. I'll usually make her put the phone away when she has a friend or her boyfriend over.

A very wise 26yo told me, 'you can resist it but it's part of this generation.' If you can't beat 'em join em. I see no reason to outlaw texting in general, setting boundaries is quite another issue.
