Simple, Superb, and Sublime…6 Days of Deluxe Dining UPDATED:THE WAVE LUNCH

I showed my friends the pics of V&A's, and I had to make reservations last night for our quick little weekend trip in June! Amazing...everything looked so incredibly amazing! I am so excited to try it!

Thank you so much for putting all of the pics of the dinner up.

Oh--I am so glad! :goodvibes I hope you have an incredible meal, I know you will! ;)

Excellent review of Tusker House Safari Breakfast! :thumbsup2 We enjoyed our experience there too. I do agree it feels a bit chaotic and rushed, although this has often been my experience at most Character Meals. Everyone becomes so excited about all the goings ons that it can be difficult to focus on your food and eating. ;) We also ate lunch at Tusker House earlier in our trip and had a lovely meal, although DH does not care for the food there as much as I do. We had TERRIFIC service and you can feel more relaxed about eating your meal at lunch. :flower3: Despite the fact that there are not an abundance of TS options at AK, I think Tusker House is certainly worth choosing for breakfast or lunch, both offer good food and a very fun time! :cheer2:

Hmmm...seems like some of my pics are not showing? :confused3 I have no idea why...anybody know what I should do to make them return to normal?

Never mind!! Seems to be fine now...

wow that V&A review was great.. I won't be able to do it this time with my two kids (since it'll just be me with them) but hopefully I can splurge one day and do this i've never done a chefs table and as a culinary arts student i feel that its almost necessary lol
All your other reviews were good too you write like a professional dining reviewer

I'm all caught-up! :yay:

And...

HUNGRY!! :rotfl:

Man oh man, do I miss the CA Grill. That ravioli is one of the best things I've ever ingested!

It looks like we have a similar taste in our restaurant selection :goodvibes We went to Tusker House for breakfast as well. If you return, it would really be worth to find out whether you can eat the ham. It was really great! And they also had some fruit chutneys at the same station as the jams and this was so good with the ham!

What a beautiful write up of V&A, just dreamy. Reminds me of yes, French Laundry, and The Herbfarm (which is in Woodinville Wa), both of which I've dined at with my dinner club. Meals such as that are not for the fainthearted and must be undertaken knowingly!

Out of curiosity, how long did your dinner at V&A take? At the Herbfarm it is a five hour experience. Which, while we all somewhat scoffed at, at booking, really and truly was that long. Your duck and kumquat images took me back to that dinner, I might have to go pull out that menu again!

My DH would not have the stamina for the Chef's dinner but I do hope to do the main dining room with him one of these days.

All that said, after your review, I must go to California Grill on our text trip! Looking forward to the rest of your reviews.

Great review!! Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic idea about the jam and ham...;) I didn't get to try any of their jams or preserves, but will next time! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for reading! It was indeed a special meal. :goodvibes

Our dinner took several hours, I think I said 4? I agree, it didn't "feel" long at all, and they had warned us of the timing in advance. It was all paced so perfectly, we never felt a lag, and actually could enjoy each course (even if we couldn't finish each one!).

Yes, we loved CG. I had read some not so great reviews just prior and was worried, but it was outstanding. And, it was great to be able to bring DD (along with the whole family) and have a wonderful family meal, amazing food, excellent service, and the bonus of seeing the fireworks. :goodvibes I see the good reasons why this is a popular spot for a great dinner!

Great reviews!!!

Thank you! :goodvibes I LOVED reading your fabulous reviews, so thanks for reading mine. ;)

Enjoying the reviews!:thumbsup2

Thanks very much :)

Next installments coming up soon...In Room Dining at WL and Yak & Yeti

Must admit to having snuck in at the end to read your review f Tusker House, but what an excellent review. Am going back to the start to read more. How lovely to hear about the 'extra' character interaction your family had with King Louie and Baloo. :goodvibes

Thanks for the reviews.

Overall Rating: 4/5

The food, while not the best of the trip, was excellent, and enjoying it in our jammies in our room was invaluable! Service was top-notch.

The original plan was to enjoy another nice dinner out, this time at Citricos. We had been very excited to try Citricos, but we were just completely exhausted. After coming back from Animal Kingdom (sorry, I skipped ahead on this day, but will post Yak & Yeti next), we had a quick dip in the pool and then actually headed right back out to Magic Kingdom after a change of clothes. Although pushing on meant we’d miss dinner out, it was worth it! Not only did we end up having a relaxing and delicious dinner, we also enjoyed being at MK after dark (although we left before the parade began). Concierge cancelled our ADR for us as we walked out. While in MK I had my Dole Whip Float, reviewed earlier, and DD and DH shared some popcorn, DH also got some fries from the stand in Frontierland. Sorry, no pic, but they were good fries, crispy. These were all snacks.

As we headed back to WL we decided we would order room service for dinner. We had already “budgeted” for 2 TS credits per person for our evening meals, so we could easily use them for In-Room Dining.

I called down to place our order and spoke with a lovely woman who, at the end of the conversation, mentioned she had been the one to arrange our beautiful surprise cake that DSis had ordered! She could not have been more gracious or helpful, as we found with all the CMs we encountered at WL, and told me that in addition to the room service menu, she could also offer me any of the fish dishes from Artist Point. How great! :) (side note: the next evening the man who took our order was perfectly nice, but didn’t compare to Carol, and did NOT offer the fish from Artist Point—he also didn’t include a couple of side items we asked for). I almost ordered the scallops from AP, but decided not to because I was not that hungry and we had already enjoyed many rich meals…The “fish of the day” was a maple-glazed trout, which also sounded terrific.

For drinks we ordered: Bottled Water for DD (small Dasani), Bottled Water for me (a large Evian bottle), and a Pot of Hot Tea for DH.

Carol had told me it would be 30-40 minutes, but our food arrived within 20-25 minutes. Hernan, the same wonderful server we had deliver room service to us all week, arrived and set everything up for us on the dining table. This was so great! It was our first real downtime of the trip (other than the brief naptimes we made sure to have almost every day for DD).

Caesar Salad - Romaine lettuce with Romano cheese, herb croutons, and Caesar dressing

For his starter DH ordered Caesar salad with dressing on the side. I believe this was fine…standard Caesar. (see pic below with ribs)

House-made chips and Salsa

I ordered the chips because nothing else appealed to me and I knew DH and DD would love to share them—they did. This was HUGE! Seriously, the basket of chips was gigantic, salsa was quite good, if very mild, and the chips were definitely homemade. They were wonderful. :thumbsup2

Grilled Cheese
DD had grilled cheese (we asked for cheddar rather than American), french fries, and applesauce. She basically picked at this…didn’t eat much. It looked good to me, I think she was simply not hungry. She had an apple from our fridge as well. Sorry, no pic!

Grilled Chicken Pasta - penne and fresh vegetables tossed with roasted red onions and garlic-chipotle cream sauce

My main dish, which I had ordered with no onions, was very good. It was nothing spectacular, but as I said earlier, I wasn’t very hungry and this was perfect. The sauce was light for a cream sauce, not too garlicky, and the veggies were excellent. The spinach had been added just at the end, and was still tender.

IMG_8578-1.jpg

St. Louis-style BBQ Pork Ribs - full slab of slow-smoked pork ribs with mashed potatoes and cowboy beans

The winner of the evening- these were absolutely fantastic. DH LOVES good ribs…he has spent years perfecting his own smoking method and homemade rubs. He was totally impressed with these seriously good ribs! :thumbsup2 They were properly smoked, with pink tinged edges inside from the wood smoke. What a generous portion too! Two could very easily have shared this serving. His mashed potatoes were also excellent, along with perfectly cooked, still slightly crisp green beans and carrots. He did not receive beans, which was fine, he would rather have had the veg anyway. These were a dry-rub type of rib, but he also received a little pitcher with plenty of BBQ sauce.

Caramel Apple Pie

My dessert looked delish! I really didn’t have it in me to eat it…but I did try two small bites because I just had to. It was good…the taste of rum and spices dominated a bit too much (rum caramel sauce?--must have been) for my taste. The apples—beautifully, thinly sliced—also could have used a tad more cooking time. The juices of the apples should have come out a bit more and balanced the assertive flavors of the spicy crumble top (cinnamon, ginger, maybe even allspice). It had the potential to be delicious, I honestly think it did not bake long enough.

Triple Chocolate Mousse Stampede

Hmmm...can't find a picture of this one! :confused3 DH did not eat any of this right away, he was also so full. He told me that he tried a few bites later as he put the trays outside the room, and it was very good. This looked like a typical rich chocolate cake with a thick mousse filling, three layers.

I almost forgot to mention that we also received a zillion tiny bottles of ketchup, other condiments, and the most scrumptious cornbread! :lovestruc We were sent like 10 large pieces of cornbread! I love good cornbread…this was slightly sweet, soft, not too dense with a delicate crumb, and of course delish with the soft butter they sent.

Hernan offered to come back up to clear everything away for us if we wished, or we could put the trays out ourselves, in the hallway. Dh just did it himself, and then called concierge to let them know the trays were in the hallway. They were promptly cleared. I mention this because we did see some trays sitting in the hallways for some time one day. An overall gratuity was included in this 2 credit dining, but we naturally tipped Hernan a bit extra when he delivered.

We loved our In-Room Dining experience this evening! :thumbsup2

It was so relaxing and delicious that we repeated it the next evening—read more on that one later.

Okay, I just read this thread, I'm speechless, but here's the smiley: :cloud9:

The ribs, vegetables and mashed potatoes your husband had do look really good! :) The chicken and pasta dish you ordered is exactly the same dish I was served the night we went to WC with your daughter. I thought it was quite tasty.

Yes...I think several of the in-room dining menu selections can be found, in some form, at WCC. The ribs were just surprisingly great! :thumbsup2 I have no idea if they are the same as at WCC...I wonder because I have read several reviews that inidicate the ribs at WCC were so-so. Anyway, ours were delish.

Our party was split on this meal. DSis and her DH loved it, I liked it, DH did not care for it. Service was very slow, some dishes were good, some very mediocre. Beautifully themed restaurant!

After DH, DD, and I enjoyed the truly wonderful Wildlife Discovery Excursion in Africa, we all planned to meet up again and have lunch. Surprise! My parents decided to join us at AK after all (they originally planned to do something else this day…we knew they couldn’t resist more time with their darling granddaughter  ). We met them near Expedition Everest and the “kids” went on while the parents watched our DD (and she devoured an ice cream cone from a nearby stand). We decided to walk over a bit early to Yak & Yeti to see if we could get in to eat at 12 rather than 12:30. No problem!

IMG_8533.jpg

They sat us right away at a very cool peacock mosaic table in a corner. Our server was very nice and enthusiastic, but ended up being very slow towards the end (we asked for the check 3 times!).

IMG_8536.jpg

I mentioned my mustard problem and he had a chef come out and talk with me. I believe I was denied bottled water here on the plan. This bugged me at the places where they don’t allow adults bottled water on the plan…kids can get it (as well they should) so should adults. I would have even settled for a kids small bottle, oh well…I think that I ordered iced tea.

Despite the slow service, we were once again impressed with the simplicity of having three different parties paying at our table, and no problems (ever) with mix-ups over bills or charges. :thumbsup2 My parents were simply paying out of pocket, not on a plan, and we and my sis were on two different deluxe dining plans. We all ordered starters, including DDad and DM who shared the lettuce cups.

Pork Pot Stickers - pan seared or steamed, soy lime dipping sauce

Dh ordered these seared and they were good…he thought they were pretty average (similar to any typical Asian restaurant take-out version) but made well enough. He did not care for the dipping sauce.

Wok-Fried Green Beans - battered green beans, sweet Thai chili dipping sauce

These were tasty; everyone enjoyed them! The batter was flavorful, nicely dense and crisp—almost like a beer batter with cornmeal added, but didn’t taste of beer! The dipping sauce was sweet and only slightly spicy, Dh stole some from me for his potstickers as well. I think two of us ordered these and all shared them.

48910379915_0_ALB1.jpg

Lettuce Cups - minced chicken breast, chopped vegetables, maple tamarind sauce, crisp lettuce cups

I had a small bite and found this to be better than most lettuce cup appetizers, of which I am normally not a fan. I liked the tangy, sweet tamarind sauce.

28910379915_0_ALB1.jpg

Tempura Shrimp - chili plum sauce, coconut-ginger rice, stir fried vegetables

I really enjoy shrimp and was hoping this would be an easy winner…but, it was not so good. :sad2: The batter was flavorless and a tad un-crisp, not exactly soggy, but not very fresh tasting—the shrimp was also flavorless. Needless to say, I only ate a couple before giving up. The serving was large, hmmm…veggies were over-cooked, and the rice, which should normally be a redeeming component of such a meal, was awful! I love coconut and ginger, but this tasted of neither. The rice itself was not jasmine rice either, as had been described to me, it was more like a long-grain rice, with no gentle scent that one can enjoy from jasmine or basmati. Weird. DD received two lovely servings of actual jasmine rice, which I shared with her. Funnily, my rice was loaded with flecks of color/ingredients (presumably the elusive coconut-ginger) which imparted nothing to the starchy blandness. You know what it tasted like? Box rice mix, with "flavor" packets...the kind I had as a kid, and didn't like then.

Crispy Honey Chicken - tempura chicken, broccoli, carrots, honey sauce

Now, DH and DSis ordered this dish. DSis loved it, DH did not. He didn’t think it was bad, simply uninspired…again, average. I tasted it and thought it was actually quite yummy! (Perhaps in part because my meal was not so good). I would, though, order this on a return visit. The chicken was white meat (we asked for white meat for this and for DD’s chicken, it would NOT have been all white meat had we not asked) and the batter was crisp and tasty underneath a sweet, but not overly sweet, honey sauce. Good old jasmine rice accompanied this, and it was great of course. One could also select brown rice—I should have!

88910379915_0_ALB1.jpg

DD’s meal was basically the tempura chicken (no sauce) with two small cups of jasmine rice. She ate a small amount of chicken, and a fair amount of rice (she loves rice of all kinds!). I thought it was good for a kid’s meal, the chicken was good quality and well prepared. I wished our server had mentioned she could have veggies AND rice—it wasn’t clear to me when we ordered and she asked for rice—basically I didn’t expect two cups of rice. No biggie! But good to know for future visits.

IMG_8544.jpg

At this point in the meal we had been waiting for our server for some time to place our dessert orders…we almost left it took so long! We wanted to get moving, and we were all full. But, since desserts were included, we went ahead. We did ask for the check at this point since we could tell how the tide was turning. We had to ask two more times before our server brought it. They had gotten pretty busy, however, we had to wait waaayyy too long, even for busy.

Fried Wontons - Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, honey vanilla drizzle

I debated ordered this, which I had seen on many Dis reviews, or the mango pie. The mango pie (I love mango!) looked more appealing to me on a normal day, but I knew I would only have a bite, so went with this because it seemed a good choice for “just a bite.”

I liked this! The wontons tasted exactly like any cream cheese wontons you could order anywhere, but the honey vanilla drizzle was quite wonderful, the honey could be detected, as could actual vanilla flavor. The ice cream was good vanilla ice cream, went well with the rest. This is a super rich dessert…a good choice to share, I only had one. Even if I had been hungry still, I couldn’t have eaten much more than 2 or 3 because they were so rich. I did eat all those beautiful little ripe strawberries. :cloud9:

30020379915_0_ALB1.jpg

Sorbet - Mango, lemon, raspberry

These looked lovely! I sampled one small taste of the mango and it was delicious; bright, fresh full of mango flavor, not overly sweet. :)

10020379915_0_ALB1.jpg

I know that my sis will return to Yak & Yeti…I am not sure we will. We truly wanted to like this restaurant! :guilty: I would return because I found the ambience to be delightful and fun. I enjoyed my starter and dessert, as well as Dh’s main, so feel like I could return and have an enjoyable meal. However, Dh said he has NO desire to return, that he could get that food easily anywhere at home (true enough) but did agree it was a fun spot to sit.

I suppose we may try a CS next time in AK—any suggestions???

.

I just have to tell you - that was hands-down the best V&A review I've ever read! We had no plans to eat here, but now I'll be on the phone every day until our May trip trying to weasel our way in.

This made me want to lick my computer screen.

I liked the Tusker House, DH & DS liked Flame Tree BBQ (the seating area down by the water was wonderful!)

.

I love Artist Point too. Just never could get around to writing a review. Thanks for you putting in the time and effort to describe for all of us.
