Silly question, but have you ever found a strange lump on your nose? (Happy update, post 16!)

I had a lump beside my nose x-rayed last week, and now my doctor's booked me in to have it ultrasounded next week. It's hard and immobile, and I suspect it's been sitting there for several years. Which is why I'm not too concerned about it (because I kept noticing it and then forgetting to say anything about it).

I originally assumed it was a blocked sinus, or something, but my doctor says it's in the wrong place for that (right under the crease of the nostril on the side). And the x-ray showed it's not boney. I've looked up everything I can, and I can't find anything that matches the description.

Anyone else have any experience with something like this?

(I think my doc's a little concerned by the "hard and immobile" aspect, which I know can be associated with cancer, but it's not near any lymph nodes I know about.)

Edited to add: Turns out my bump is a small "fibroma" which is a kind of benign tumor/cyst/fibrous growth, and since it's not causing any problems and isn't actually making me look like Snow White's evil stepmother, I've decided to leave it right where it is.

Did you have any trauma in that area to the nose? Maybe it is a nasal septal hematoma. I know those can be hard immobile lumps, but they are filled with blood, i think.

Well, I'm a major klutz who has indeed kneed herself in the nose more than once... But I kinda doubt it's a nasal septal hematoma, because the septum is the part in the middle dividing your nostrils. My bump is over on the side of my nose, well away from the septum.

On the other hand, I'm totally down for hematomas! That'd be a lovely explanation. "You've banged yourself in the face one time too many, and gave yourself a lump." "Cool!"

My mom has a small cyst on the side of her nose. It's been there for years and the doctor was never concerned with it. It hasn't grown at all, but I suspect she could have it removed if she really wanted to. It's flesh colored and hard, but nothing to worry about in her case. Good luck!

My DD had a pimple that felt like a pebble in the lobe of her ear. It had no outward sign and lasted forever. I took her in and doc wasn't sure but had us try some acne meds, hot cloths, etc. And it did eventually go away.
I've had a cyst that was quite hard and immobile on my ankle many years ago - I've also had a non-cancerous tumor removed so even if it is a small tumor it might not be dangerous.. Good Luck!

Here comes Debbie Downer: My dad has recently been diagnosed with sinus cancer. He has a lump in his nose as well as tingling along the cheek nerve, an eye that waters constantly, and a place on his gum that kept making his dentures fit poorly. The place on the gum was what led him to seek treatment, then he started noticing the lump, and the tinging started. The eye watering had been going on for about a year. We spent yesterday having a lung biopsy; over the last ten days, he's had a tissue and bone biopsy, 2 CT scans and an MRI. His was diagnosed by an oral surgeon, after the ENT doctor told him there was absolutely nothing wrong with his nose or sinus. I hesitated to even post this, but I had never heard of sinus cancer before. I'm glad you are having it looked at.

Sorry to hear that. I myself had breast cancer & rads with this yr which has lead me to life altering lymphedema. It is in my whole body which means something is broken and we are looking for it.

I feel like holding a sign in front of your "ENT" office to let people know this doctor does not give a hoot about your well being.

I am up against doctors that still do not recognize lymphedema as a "big deal". WHY, you ask because they lack knowledge to treat it.

It is scary out there. Be your own advocate and google the heck out of things.

I'm so sorry you're suffering this! On our last trip down to Disney, I think I saw someone with this condition - she had one leg that was very enlarged.

And yes, I agree, I would definitely consider that a "big deal"!

I was feeling a little guilty, because I think I might have first noticed it several years ago, but now I'm happy I'm finally getting it looked at!

I think so! He's very laid back about most things, but when something catches his interest he's right on top of it. He would have had me in for the ultrasound even sooner, but I'm going to be out of town for the long weekend.

I finally heard back from my doctor. He says my bump is just a "fibroma" or possibly a small cyst. He started to talk about making me an appointment to have it removed. So I asked him if there was any reason, other than cosmetic, to have it taken off and he said no, it's not doing any harm. It's just sitting there.

So, I've decided to leave it alone, as it's not particularly visible (one side of my nose is wee tiny bit fuller than the other - if I really cared, I could correct it with makeup) and it's not bothering me in any other way. The doctor was a bit startled when I told him that, and said, "You make assumptions and then people surprise you..." So I told him that I just wanted to know that it wasn't anything bad and now that I know that, I'm all good.

He thought that was great and told me to just keep an eye out for any changes.
