I hope I am posting this in the right place...

I am in the process of planning my son's first birthday party at the end of July. I have been toying with the idea of getting a die cutter for a while. Now that I am looking at things on Etsy and Pinterest, I think I could make a lot of things myself if I had one. My question is about the Disney shapes. I know they do not have an licensed Disney stuff like Cricut would with the Disney cartridges. Any way of making mickey heads? I've already decided against the Cricut because of the cost of the cartridges. Just wondering if the Silhouette Portrait is going to be worth it for what I want considering most of my projects will be Disney themed!

I have the silhouette portrait...and there are several people that do cut disney items out with their silhouette.

I have not cut much with it yet...but there are several of our members that have..
dogcarbon is one and reddy is another.... (they come to the top of my mind first.)

Reddy has some free files that she shares down on the scrapbooking forum under the thread called "file share".. if you click the links you will see the things she did I believe from a lot of coloring pages...

I also agree with going the silhouette route of the cricut... Most of the disney carts are retired or they cost a mortgage payment of your house to purchase... They are hard to find even in the brick and mortar stores any more.

I have both machines and I use my carts alot but I tend to move towards the silhouette more and more.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am just getting into some DIY (seriously basic crafts LOL I am not a scrap booker) so I admit that I don't know a lot about the different cutters, but I just can't see having to spend so much on cricut cartridges. I still think over $150 is a lot but hopefully if I get the hang of it I will use it and get my moneys worth. Thanks for letting me know about the file share, I'm off to look there now!

It's definitely a better fit with the silhouette than the cricut any more.

The cricut you are so limited with the carts.. Unless you download their software most letters are not welded for titles... (which can be something you want)..

There are a lot of free svg files for the silhouette too.. and you can create your own with coloring pages or images.. (I haven't tried it but I know Reddy has in the past).

Good luck with your decision..and feel free to come back and ask questions... there is always someone around to help... and many of the girls on the boards are silhouette users (and have the cricut too).

I love my silhouette cameo and I cut Disney shapes all the time. All you have to do it google a mickey head image. Just save it and import it into your silhouette studio program and use the trace function. Voila!

I actually made something very similar to this http://www.etsy.com/listing/107011018/handmade-custom-red-mickey-mouse?ref=sr_gallery_21&ga_includes%5B0%5D=tags&ga_search_query=mickey+mouse+birthday+invitations&ga_page=1&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery (note: I"m not affiliated with that seller, the image is just close to what I did) but I used buttons to finish it.

Hope this helps.

Another Sil lover here! I have found it easy to find designs on line, pull them into the program and then cut or sketch them out.

And creating Mickey's head is not that hard.

I was waiting for a good promo to order the portrait and finally ordered it on July 1st. It finally shipped today! My son's birthday party is the 20th. It's coming from CA to MD so I hope I get it a few days before the party so I can make everything. Thanks for all the replies, I hope I love it as much as you all do. I got the Designers Edition software so hopefully that will help. Is it pretty easy to use? I hope there isn't much of a learning curve as I won't have too much time between getting it and his party! I basically just need to cut out letters, mickey heads, squares, circles and rectangles. Shouldn't be too hard right? :confused3

You'll do great with it.. and if you have any issues post here and one of us will get to it..

The Designer Edition will allow you to cut SVG files that you can find free and purchase online.. I am not affiliated with misskatescuttables.com but she has awesome cuts and for a very good price... and if you like her facebook page she gives out a daily freebie that you can download! I have lots of cuts I got from the freebie!!

The possiblities are endless now for you!!! I just used mine today to cut titles for some baby book pages and I think after a week hiatus for my machine it was thrilled to be used again!!

Thank you so much!

I read about MisskatesCuttables and started collecting some of the freebies after I ordered my silhouette so I have a few things ready to cut when it gets here! I'm hoping it's easy to use right out of the box.

My Silhouette Portrait came today and I LOVE IT! It was SO easy to use right out of the box. When I was trying to decide whether or not to take the plunge I did watch some you tube videos on how to use it so I think that might have helped. It didn't take me long to figure out the software at all. I got what I think is a great deal. I got the Portrait and the Designer Edition software for $130. The DE is great, I've been able to use files I already had on my computer that weren't even SVG. I have only cut shapes, have not used the print and cut yet but excited to try it. I have already cut out a ton of shapes in a short amount of time. You were right, Mickey heads are a breeze!

I also saw on Miss Kate Cuttables there are some Disney shapes but they obviously aren't called Disney or Mickey Mouse.

The only problem I had was the mat was too sticky so the first thing I tried to cut stuck to the mat. I had to run to the craft store anyway to get ribbon for the banners so I picked up a set of Cricut brand mats for $6 after a 50% off coupon and they are SO much better to use that the Silhouette one it came with. I will eventually tackle getting all the card stock off there and getting it less sticky to use again.

Now I might start scrapbooking I love this thing so much :rotfl2:

I recently go the silhouette cameo. I love it! I've quit using my cricut completely!
