As this seems to be the place to talk about some of the loyalty programs relevant to Canadian travelers, Air Canada just announced significant changes to the Aeroplan program, effective January 1st, 2026. In essence, Aeroplan is doing what most other North American loyalty program is doing and is moving away from the concept of "miles" to calculate point to "$spent".

In essence, starting January 1st, you get 1 Aeroplan point per $1 spent on Air Canada flights and select partners. Credit Card spend, hotel and car rental bookings credited to AE, Uber, Journie will continue to accumulate in the program as well.

For those with status, the way that one will qualify for 2027 and beyond is also changing. Long story short, for people who were barely qualifying on Status Qualifying Dollars, and not crediting anything else to the program, achieving status will become really tough... but for high spenders who were primarily flying on short flights, it may have become easier. Crediting spend from premium cards and other partners will also help

Some are speculating that those changes may not be too popular with people that have Elite status, so Porter and Westjet may be running promos trying to attract elite AC flyers

Yup I got this email as well.

I'm curious how the Air Canada Vacation packages for all inclusives will be awarding points now. Since it's dollars vs miles, no one knows how much a flight costs to the DR once in a package vs. how many miles you fly from airport to airport.

@ilovetotravel1977 Point accumulation for ACV flights will be as follow:

SQCs will be awarded on the full value of the ACV package on a 1:1 basis, with no upper limits

hmm, so If I pay $2500 per person to go to Punta Cana (DR), we only get 500 points each?
For someone with no status, correct. For anyone with status (25k to 100k), the applicable new multiplier (2x-6x) will be applicable toward point accumulation. Toward your status, if this is something that matters to you, you will be accumulating approx. 2500SQC

I find it pretty hard to rack up Aeroplan points vs Scene points, i've got like 10k Aeroplan points but i feel like i'm gonna be stuck at that for a while, This change works out for me considering that i might be going to Alberta next summer to visit a buddy of mine
