We're going for the day during our trip in June. Can you recommend a good casual seafood restaurant on the water?

Is it a walkable area with public parking?

I can't wait to see the white sand! Thanks for any info!

you might want to PM lillygator, she lives in SK. we go to SK all the time and the only restaurants I know of are all on the bay, not the the gulf itself. we usually go into siesta village and eat at the Daiquiri Deck. Turtle's has good food, and sits right on the bay. Coaster's is right before you cross the drawbridge on your left and is also on the bay. SKOB (siesta key oyster bar) is in siesta village, as is the Lobster Pot. the restaurants in the village tend to be outdoors, and can get crazy, especially at night. you can find a parking space in the village and walk the restaurants and shops. the restaurants on the bay are a mile or two from the beach.

Thanks my Univ board friend, lol.

Those sound great, exactly what I was looking for, outdoor/deck oyster bar type of places for lunch or early dinner. We'll probably be heading back after sunset, going for the day to check it out and maybe scout out places to stay for a future beach trip. Thanks a bunch!

grab an early dinner and then head back to the beach for sunset. they have a big drum circle and sunset party. as far as the white sand goes, this should hold you over until June: :)

Wow, that sounds like fun, and oh, the sand looks like brand new out of the bag Home Depot sandbox sand! Maybe I'll end up a Daytona/St Augustine convert! Thanks for the cute pic...as a quirky scrapbooker, it looks like something I'd shoot for a layout, lol.

Not to take over someone elses post, but we were thinking of going to Siesta Key for 2 days after our cruise in August. Anyone know of a good place to stay? Want clean place on or close to the beach, cost is at the bottom of my list, this is vacation. Thanks

Just a quick note about the drum circle, it takes place on Sundays only, and starts about an hour before sunset. We saw it in December and it was great. The D. deck is our fav restaurant in Siesta Key village.

markey: About finding a place to stay, Siesta Key has a ton of different accomodation options.
I would suggest going to the siesta key chamber of commerce web site and requesting the free map and guide book.

Also on the chamber web site you can look up accomodation by length of stay (less then a week, one week etc ). It will give you a good idea about what is available.

Also private rentals can be found on vrbo .

Siesta4rent dot com also offers a ton of rental options.

markey, my uncle owns a couple really nice rental condos on siesta key. ive stayed in one before and theyre beautiful. theyre super clean and actually really really spacious..and right on the water with an amazing view. the website is siestaview.com if you wanna check it out :)

the great thing about SK is there are no hotels anywhere near the beaches. you're going to look for a rental, apartment, condo.

Oh lots of places!! Sly mentioned quite a few....pretty much anywhere has public parking on the beach that you can walk to. What type of restaurant are you looking for? Live music? You mentioned casual seafood...Captain Curts in not on the water but they are a good casual seafood place. Also, Barnacle Bill's, has three locations in Sarasota - none actually on the Key but they have great seafood as well.
Siesta Key is awesome, the village is a lot of fun. We usually eat at the Daiquiri Deck in the village better food than most of the others. You won't find anything on the Gulf though, most everything has been outlawed here and they are even trying to run off the places in the village.

A GREAT breakfast place is the Broken Egg on the key! Yummy!

Pm me if you need any other info!

while they may not be classified as hotels there are lots of high rise condo's on the beach. If you've never been I just don't want you to expect an empty beach with nothing. And the condos continue to rise.

The Surfrider restaurant was the last of the Gulf restaurants and one of my faves! They sold out to the condos and are now called Javier's and are located the South end of Siesta Key - very good restaurant. Peruvian and American cuisine. Very small place....excellent food and service and the owners are there every night and couldn't be nicer people.

the condos in SK are nothing like the ones in clearwater, at least in SK there's a setback distance. :) I've seen a good write-up about Javier's in the Weekly Planet. we're going to try it soon. but when the weather is this good who can stray far from the D-Deck? :teeth:

offtopic quickly for lilligator:

do you know of a parking area near the point o' rocks area? I want to take the girls diving there, but don't want to carry the gear a mile. :)

Thanks for all the info!

Live music is great if it's kid friendly, ds will be 6, but anything that has that I'm on the beach feel to it. I found websites for the ones mentioned, and I think I'd like to try them all, lol.

Now I understand why I couldn't find a hotel, I think I got two options on Expedia. (When staying in Orlando, sometimes we go to Daytona for the day and get a hotel room just so we'll have a pool, somewhere to park, change, and shower the sand and salt off.)

We were going to save the beach day for the weekend since we'll want to avoid the parks so thanks, I'll have to plan it for Sunday. Ds will love it! (he has a drum set) Reminds me of the sunset thing in Key West.

Thanks!!!

Absolutely, if you are driving onto the key from the South Bridge (as you would pass Coasters) turn left at the light. Crescent Beach Grocery is there and Captain Curt's....on your right, almost immediatley is a public parking access..it's very narrow but park there and walk straight down....to the beach....(I can't remember the names of the two condo's it's in between) once you hit the beach look to your left and you'll see the wall and the point of rocks - nto far at all. In fact this is Crescent Beach and this is "our" beach, so don't tell anyone! We usually go here over Siesta...especially during season, it's usually deserted aside from runners/walkers/shellers. It's been so chilly we haven't walked down there in a while! Hope to get back there soon! Nothing like a green flash sunset on Siesta Key!

Javier's is great, it's on the right hand side passed Captain Curt's in a small shopping plaza where City Pizza and Siesta Spirits are.

thanks for the info. :) I know exactly where you are talking about. we've never seen the green flash but continue to look for that instant. :)

I must have missed Javiers in December. It looks to be about a 2 minute walk from where we stay in Siesta Key. I know that we went to City Pizza a couple times so I will have to look for it in December.

lillygator: hope you get some great weather again soon, so you can start enjoying crescent beach again.

Can't wait to be in SK again later this year. I have a big crescent beach pic (purchased from Davidson drugs) taped right above my computer.

riu!! Can't wait for you all to come back - I hope the weather is much kinder to you next year, I feel you really didn't get to expereince it! But I am so glad you enjoyed it enough to return!!

I need to have a DIS meet at my house!! our pool deck was just laid today and its HUGE!! I can see the green mickey heads now!

Anyone else who is interested in Siesta I would be happy to send the tourist info to you or answer any questions, just pm me and let me know!

McBean - where in Tampa are you? I am orginially from Lakeland, spent my college years in Gainesville and upon finishing moved to Brandon for a short stint before landing in paradise! My father lives in the USF VA area....

Have you ever come down to the village on a "holiday", on St Patty's we have the - well I can't recall the name, on Thanksgiving it's the Turkey Trot....basically it's similar to Gator Stomping in Gainesville which everyone should know about.... buy a cup, go from bar to bar in the village, get a shirt!!

We haven't done this in a couple years, but the guy who owns Daiquiri Deck, The Speak Easy, and 7-11 plays ball with my husband so we get the cups and shirts!! Maybe when we get rid of these pesky kids we can partake again....JUST KIDDING!
