I don't normally recommend movies on here, or anywhere for that matter, but this movie was incredible. I know it's very early, but I predict DiCaprio will win Best Actor at the Oscars. The movie is dark, and not for children, but it's an amazing movie. And it takes a lot to impress me. He sure has come a long way from Titanic. I think he's the best actor of my generation. So if you haven't seen it and are looking for a GREAT movie, give it a try. The commercials do not do the movie justice.

I read the book and was so excited for this movie to come out and it did not disappoint. I love Leonardo and thought he did fantastic. I'm hoping he will win his Oscar for this movie! I also thought Michelle Williams was wonderful.

I agree! I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this movie! We saw it in the theater when it first came out and I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. There aren't very many movies I can say that about so that's high acclaim coming from me. ;)

This was an excellent movie with DiCaprio knocking it out of the park when it came to acting. It's quite dark so not for everyone though.

When I told DD I hadn't seen it, she immediately went to the video store and got it for me. I'm glad she made me watch it--I really enjoyed it, as well. :thumbsup2

Interesting...I was so looking forward to this movie and when it came out, the critics did not love it at all. So much so that I passed on seeing it in the theater. Have yet to watch the DVD. I also think that its time has passed for nominations. I think it didn't really get any but I could be remembering incorrectly. Glad to hear a good review on it.

You are right. It really didn't seem to get much critical acclaim, that's why it took me this long to watch it. I mean Oscar nominations for 2010, which will be announced next year. But it is an amazing movie. I really don't think you will be disappointed. I usually rely on critics pretty heavily, but this one, they got wrong. I hope you take a chance and watch it. I loved it. And whoever said Dicaprio knocked it out of the park, BINGO. The range he shows is award worthy. I just hope it's recognized.

I thought the movie was good. However, I am not a fan of Leonardo Dicaprio. I find him to be "just okay". In every movie, he plays himself. The character he played in Shutter Island was the same as the The Aviator. Didn't seem like he stretched himself much to me. Not that his performance was "bad", just not Best Actor worthy to me. I imagine he may garner a nomination, but I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if he won.

How could you all watch the movie when you knew what the ending was (if you read the book)? I just could not watch it because I knew what was going to happen and it took away the psychological thriller factor for me. I wished I had not read the book OR that I had seen the movie first.

I remember when The Village come out (M. Night. S) a few years ago. It was hyped for 6 months and then RIGHT before I went to see it my son told me the ending....ruined the whole thing.

Is it possible for people to know the ending of a thriller or mystery and still enjoy it? Am I the only one who cannot?

I didn't read the book, so that wasn't a problem. I think I've posted on every Shutter Island thread that's been posted... I LOVED this movie. One of the best I've ever seen. I read critic reviews, but put absolutely no stock in them whatsoever.

I'm not a Leo fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I liked him in this one. I'm curious to see how Inception does... without even seeing it, I have a feeling that he's going to get an Oscar nom either way.

I read Shutter Island first and I was still very much looking forward to seeing the movie. It didn't bother me at all that I knew the ending.

Secret: I sometimes read the end of books then finish reading the whole book. I still enjoy the book and it doesn't bother me to know an ending.

I thought the movie was oustanding too. I loved the book so I was a bit sceptical about the movie but it was excellent.

It's a different experience seeing a movie to reading a book. I agree it wasn't quite as suspenseful when you'd already read the book, but it was still fantastic to see it played out on screen. Oh and by the way, the ending is different! Just a little difference. Well a big difference really but it's at the very very end - that surprised me a lot!

Thats how I am. I like to read the book first and compare the two. I also do movie spoilers before I see most movies so I am really odd!

A man walks into the cinema with his dog. He sits the dog down on the seat next to him. He's getting a lot of nasty looks from people. But during the movie, incredibly, the dog starts crying at the emotional scenes - tears rolling down his face. When the movie ends, quite a few people approach the dog owner and comment at how amazing it was to see a dog cry at the sad scenes. The owner says "I know, it really is amazing cause he didn't like the book at all". :lmao:

I love it!!!:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

Honestly, I didn't know there was a book, which is odd for me, because I usually always will read a book instead of watching the movie. I liked the movie so much, I'm gonna go to Walmart and see if they have the book. :thumbsup2

To the PP who didn't like Leo in The Aviator, I didn't like that movie at all. I felt left hanging. Howard Hughes was such a facinating man and I don't really feel they touched on that. Leo was ok. But I feel like this (SI) performance will get him his Oscar.

I loved this movie also. I saw it twice on opening weekend. It was very different to watch it the second time, many things were not what they appeared before. I had not read the book, so I had no idea what the twist was. I did read the book after, and I must say the book was not terribly interesting to me, since I knew what was going on.
