SHrek 2 stomps over Lion King and could catch Nemo

Times are too different to play a "who'a number one" game.
Absolutely correct sir...

Does anyone out there actually think that Shrek 2 is a better movie than LK or even Nemo?

Shrek 2 better than Nemo? Yes, much better imho. Better than Lion King? Well, in some ways yes, in other ways no....those two are much harder to compare. I probably enjoyed Shrek more than LK (and not just because I prefer CGI to traditional anim), however Lion King told a better story and is more of what I would consider to be a 'classic' movie.

I agree somewhat with mmaddog56, although I think Snow White should be given even more credit for probably being the most successful film ever, in terms of number of tickets sold. For Snow White to have made $70 million on it's first release (not sure if that includes the re-release in the 40s, but still), for Snow White to have made $70 million way back then, when ticket prices were probably 25 cents or something, that's way more than 1 ticket for every man, woman and child in the US, 200 million to 300 million ticket range. Try comparing that to Titanic's US gross around $600 million and probably around 100 million tickets at $6-$7 each. So you see where Snow White really ranks, and how it immediately made the Disney Studios successful.
The numbers I quoted were "Snow White has made $118,328,683 of its unadjusted $184,925,486 total since 1983". The difference between these two numbers is 66,596,803...not quite 70 million. If you take into consideration that there were re-releases of this movie in 1944, 1952, 1958, 1967 and 1975 and subtract all the money made on these releases from that 66.5K total prior to 1983, you'll probably find that Snow White made nowhere near $70 million back in 1937.

Are you really expecting a re-release of Shrek?
No, and this is another reason why you really can't compare totals for a movie like Shrek 2 to a movie like Snow White which was released almost 70 years ago. Back then, re-releases were the only way to see a movie again. Now, with VCR's and DVD players, there is far less of an incentive to re-release a movie into the theaters. I guess for a fairer comparision you would have to also include all the video sales and rentals for a title before comparing the final adjusted numbers....in addition to giving a movie like Shrek 2 another 60 years or so of sales and rentals before you can compare it to the figures Snow White has today.

I personally never really liked Shrek all that much, but Shrek 2 was simply breathtaking! The freedom that CG can give has really been used here - a real competitor to Pixar's crown!

And, by the way, this image is perfect for this board ;)

Ok, I've done a little bit more research, and Johare's facts are true. However, Snow White is still listed around number 10 all-time US box office on most lists that do an adjusting for ticket inflation. Then taking into account the considerably less US population during the time period, I think that still reflects how unbelievable that was. Even if you say it only made $20 million on it's first release (I have not been able to find a first release figure), with the price of tickets back then, that's still getting close to the number of tickets sold for Titanic with a much smaller population. The only mitigating factor is that it is true that there are megaplexes now, with more choice, so we wouldn't know what Titanic's numbers would have been (or other recent top movies' numbers), had Titanic been the only choice or only one of two or three choices at the local theaters at the time. So I guess it is true that there are some factors about the really older movies that prevent a valid comparison.
