Shrek 2 is at $809.6 and hasnt opened in China, Russia and some other little countries. Nemo is at $864.6. Are we all in denial over this occurence that the mediocre Shrek may be able to beat the superior quality and story or Nemo?

I'm a huge Disney and Pixar fan (I have all the Pixar DVDs), but I have to admit that Shrek 2 was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. It definitely deserves whatever it earns.

I thought the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the movie was boring. IMO it only got funny when the rescue started.

I agree, the beginning was a little boring and then alot of the rest feltlike snipets added in. It didnt flor good but wow the rescue was awesome

I never understood Nemo's popularity. Its a beautiful movie, but deadly dull. It only picks up after the sea turtles arive. Shrek 2 on the other hand was a pleasant suprise. Its not quite as beautiful as Nemo, but it has much stronger characters and story (almost as good as Shrek 1). I am hoping Shrek 2 does take the top spot. It is the better of the 2 flims IMHO.

Haven't seen S2. The first one was ok, but not anything wildly better than any given Disney film.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't really get the fuss over Nemo. It was beautiful, definitely, but I thought it was kind of boring. I'd take either of the Toy Stories or Monsters Inc. over Nemo any day. Haven't seen Shrek 2, because I didn't really like the first one. And I seriously tried to! :)

I loved Shrek 2 and thought that it was superior to Nemo as great as it was. But this is just one person's opinion of course.

Shouldn't the statistics for movie attendance reflect the number of people that bought tickets as opposed to the gross dollars earned? After all, as ticket prices rise a movie can have a higher gross with fewer people seeing it !!

Country Bears and Home on the Range. . . . nothing else need be said.

I liked Home on the Range. :) But I will give you that Shrek was better than Country Bears. And even maybe Black Cauldron. lol

Shrek 2 DVD is being released on the same day The Incredibles comes out in the theaters. Katzenberg still hates Disney.

Shrek 2 was a better movie than Nemo. I thought it was just me, but Nemo was a little slow.

Now Country Bears THE WORST DISNEY MOVIE OF ALL TIME!! My 4 year old got up and walked out of the theater! LOL (and that's the truth)

Because of the movie, we have yet to visit the attraction in WDW!

If you really want to truly measure the success of the animated movies you need to actually do it on an adjusted gross basis....if you do that, then Shrek has a few more movies to pass to be one of the most successful animated movies of all time...

Here are the top Animated films by Adjusted gross according to the website www.boxofficemojo.com

Rank Title Studio Adjusted Gross
10 Snow White Dis. $669,260,000
11 101 Dalmatians Dis. $613,491,900
20 Fantasia Dis. $509,886,900
24 The Lion King BV $474,203,200
27 The Jungle Book Dis. $452,394,700
28 Sleeping Beauty Dis. $446,231,000
29 Shrek 2 DW $436,048,300
32 Bambi Dis. $432,311,300
37 Pinocchio Dis. $413,856,500

The rank is where they are amongst all movies made....

So, as you can see, putting them all on the same level playing field, Shrek 2 still has a long way to go domestically to catch the true Champion, Snow White.

Actually those numbers aren't exactly a fair comparision either. Any title with a '^' after the year of initial release has had multiple releases in theaters. Also, you forgot this quote from the bottom of the chart:

"Most pre-1980 pictures achieved their totals through multiple releases, especially Disney animated features which made much of their totals in the past few decades belying their original release dates in terms of adjustment. For example, Snow White has made $118,328,683 of its unadjusted $184,925,486 total since 1983. For more about inflation adjusted numbers"

To be fair, the adjusted totals should only be calculated based on money made off the initial release of the movie...otherwise you need to freeze Snow White's totals right now and give Shrek 67 years of re-releases to catch up.

I hope that they re-release Shrek 2. DH and DS tried to go see it again but it was out of our local theater. I wouldn't mind seeing it again on the big screen. Nemo too for that matter.

I would expect these big movies to be re-released.

I agree somewhat with mmaddog56, although I think Snow White should be given even more credit for probably being the most successful film ever, in terms of number of tickets sold. For Snow White to have made $70 million on it's first release (not sure if that includes the re-release in the 40s, but still), for Snow White to have made $70 million way back then, when ticket prices were probably 25 cents or something, that's way more than 1 ticket for every man, woman and child in the US, 200 million to 300 million ticket range. Try comparing that to Titanic's US gross around $600 million and probably around 100 million tickets at $6-$7 each. So you see where Snow White really ranks, and how it immediately made the Disney Studios successful.

Adjusting for inflation is a simple way to compare old fliks to new, but it hardly stops there. For instance, in 1937 the U.S. population was 128 mil, in 2000 it was 281 mil. so is it fair to assume Snow Whites numbers should be more then double to account for population inflation ? But then you would have to consider that today there are many more movies being released each week, all pulling for that entertainment buck. How much competition did SW see as compared to Shrek2 ? Look at the number of mega theaters today compared to the Main Street USA single or twin screen theater located in each hometown.

Times are too different to try and play a "who's number one" game.
