Showing up w/extra people - Please satisfy my curiosity

Every day there at least a few posts wherin people made their ADRs for the wrong number, just found out that Aunt Bessie will be joining them, learned that the entire extended family wanted to tag along at the last minute, etc. How often are people really successul at this?

I could never do this because it conflicts with a few of my personal hang ups, but I would still love to know. And let's limit the instances to those that took place during busy times. Please reply if you were able to add guests to a reservation upon arrival at the restaurant.

Added a third guest to a two-person reservation at Le Cellier, September 4 lunch. Not a busy time, but it was Le Cellier during free dining. Absolutely no issues. The restaurant was by no means full.

It's usually suggested not to count on this, because if the restaurant is full to capacity, the extra persons will not be allowed in.
