I don't use live view at all. I did it once and it took way too long. With live view the mirror is up so you can see the image on your screen. When you want to take a picture, the mirror has to come back down first, then it goes back up for the exposure, down again after the exposure, and up again so you can see a live view. Extremely inefficient, and generally feels laggy.

Canon has a mirror lockup setting in live view to avoid this. I don't know about Nikon.

I don't know, but that guy is a real jerk! What's more impressive is that not only is he the tallest man in the world, he's also a time traveler. How else can it be that he stands in front of me and other people at the same time?

I'd recommend getting a wired remote rather than the wireless one. I used the wireless one for a while, but purchased the wired one late last year--much more reliable, plus many additional features.

I paid $15 for mine on either eBay or Amazon.

I bought a wireless before my trip last year. The button was compressed at some point in route and ran the battery down. So after setting up on the Poly beach (great spot, tripod, new 60D, lounge chair, Mai Tai, dead wireless battery), I had to take fireworks shots the hard way... with mixed results. Never again!!

I have a RF wireless remote for my D7000 that has a small component (which is the receiver for the wireless control) that connects directly to the camera with a short cable. There's a shutter release on that part as well. Even if the battery is dead, the button on the wired portion will still work. It was only about $35 or so from B&H — I'll try to post the name of it here tomorrow.

Wow! Awesome pics! So who wants to volunteer to give me some tips and tricks to getting such great shots? Do you really set up your tripod on main street? I just imagine someone tripping and knocking the whole thing over Getting some great FW shots is one of my goals for our trip this summer.

I usually set up along Main Street on the sidewalk right in front of a lamp post. If they were to trip over my stuff they would have to go through the lamp post first.

I could have raised the camera a bit, but I intentionally kept people in the frame. Most people would want to crop them out. I'm trying something new (for me) where I keep people in the frame, give it a human element. My photos look so sterile and cold when there is no one in it. I think it gives it a more emotional connection with the photo.... because you are doing the same as them right now!

Yes, we really setup a tripod! Here's a great tip for that. Once you have it up. Never ever take your hand off of it! It will get kicked! I made that mistake once. Luckily caught the camera as it was falling.
