There's no reason to tip 10 times the suggested amount, but it is reasonable to go above the suggested amount.
For a 7-night cruise the suggested gratuities
per guest, per cruise, are
-- Dining Room Server: $25.75
-- Dining Room Asst. Server: $18.75
-- Dining Room Head Server: $6.50
-- Stateroom Host/Hostess: 25.25
That's $76.25 per guest for the whole week, which works out to a total $305 for a family of 4. Total. Not per day. Not per guest.
That may seem like a lot of money, but when you realize that's for all of your meals and all of your housekeeping for your whole family for the whole week, it's really not bad at all. In fact, you may find yourself tipping more, perhaps much more, by the end of the week.
Cruse ship service employees get paid about $50 per month, and they receive room and board (shared cabins at the bottom of the ship and crew food). Their real income comes from gratuities. That's how they house, feed, and educate their families back home.
To return to the original question, cruise passengers don't have to worry about constantly tipping. Just tip on the last night. That's how the process works. But tip generously if you've received the great service that most of us have gotten on
DCL.
