Should i try out bonine before the cruise to see side effects?

Oh yes....I took it precruise at the bwi and awoke feeling horrible! I would never ever take it again.

Did you switch to something else for the cruise?

I used sea bands the first day, and always had ginger ale with dinner. I never got sea sick however. Some people swear by Bonine so that is why I used it....never ever again. I felt felt so terrible and off and can't ever really recall how breakfast was over at the yc.:crazy2: after breakfast I laid down in bed until the dcl came for us...I felt better upon arrival, and was fine during the cruise...no sea sickness :goodvibes. Good luck!

Actually they suggest you start taking it about 3 days prior to travel to prevent sea sickness. It is easier to prevent than treat. I take 1/2 a non- drowsy Dramamine. More than that and I am groggy. Best of luck.

That's a great idea. We did a "test run" the weekend before we left and I'm glad we did. We were all groggy and tired the next day. We decided to wing it on the first day of the cruise and we all ended up doing fine without any meds.

Do it. DH and I tried it out and we felt HORRIBLE the next day, never again. I bought ginger capsules from GNC and took those and bought ginger gum also. Read about both here. Our seas were calm so no issues but kept taking capsules anyway. Chewed the gum on choppy speed boat ride to Stingray City on Grand Cayman.

I have horrible motion sickness in cars and amusement park rides. I've always been fine on cruises. Recently, we did a west coast cruise and due to rougher seas I took Bonnie as a precaution on the first day and slept through most of it. Awful!!! I didn't take another one the whole trip and was totally fine.

Where did you find ginger gum?

We do Ginger chews from TJs or Whole Foods and Sea Bands. If I am going to sleep away my cruise, why bother going at all.

I am a big advocate of taking Bonine in advance. I had no ill effects whatsoever, but my (adult) daughter hated it and said it made her feel drowsy and woozy.

I was very nervous about cruising as I am prone to motion sickness. I've cruised twice now, both times starting the Bonine at least 2 days in advance. Both times my traveling companions who did not take anything got ill and I did not!

Trader Joes also have Gingermints that come in a tin like Altoids. I tried the ginger chews, and was not a fan.

I never did. I took one the night before the cruise and then continued until a day after the cruise.

I now take it with me every cruise. I'm going to have to get some more for the next cruise- 14 nights.

I get extremely sea sick and since I discovered the sea bands I do not have any issues. I put them on when in board and leave them on the entire cruise ( except to shower). I like that you can still enjoy a cocktail and not be tired or have a dry mouth or any other symptom the other remedies cause. I have tried the patch and every pill available I am a fan of the wrist band!

Yes, the ginger gum at CVS. The ginger capsules at GNC were only about $9 and it was a big ol' bottle, plenty more for another cruise!

Yes, most definitely try it out before the cruise. I get terrible motion sickness and have had two bad experiences with meds. The first time was on my honeymoon to DL in 1996. I took a Dramamine 2 hours before we arrived at DL and I honestly do not remember the day at all! DH said I was like a zombie and he was basically pulling me around. I actually went back to the hotel and slept for 3 hours while he did the rides by himself. :sad2: NOT a honeymoon to remember!

The second time was our first cruise on DCL in 2011. I got sick the first night while at dinner in Parrot Cay. Went to the doc on board and he gave me a packet of meclinzine. I took one and still felt sick, so took the other one. Bad, bad idea. I was in bed from 6pm until 12 noon the next day. I finally woke up and headed to CC and slept the day away on the sun loungers while DH and DD had a blast. The next day wasn't much better either!!

I now use a product called MotionEaze that I get at Walmart. It's an oil that you dab behind your ears and it relieves my symptoms fast. I won't use anything else now.

I think I'll stick with the bands and also try the motionease and ginger things.
Thanks everyone!

Definitely try it first at home! I took my first on the first day of a cruise and was so sleepy and groggy that my DH thought I was drunk! I had to go to bed immediately after dinner and slept well into the next day. Never again. I don't think everyone gets this response, but in case you do, better to waste a day at home then on the boat!

Sea bands seem crazy but I swear they work so well for me. They have adult and kid ones at CVS and I can take them off after the first day and I'm fine. I recently saw some decorative ones on sale at REI. No sedation effects at all!!
