Hi,
I have morning doves on my porch. They had 2 babies.....moved onto another basket and had 2 more. I just looked and the 1 baby is dead. I see mom still coming and sitting on it....probably trying to warm it:hug: I feel bad. Should I take the dead bird out....or wait till the other baby moves out.
Hate to have them next to the dead baby. Should I just wait?
Thanks
Kerri

Update.....The baby bird I think tried to fly too soon. I looked last night and didn't see it on the ground. This morning I saw the parents noodling around my porch....they "cooed" and then I saw BABY:banana:
It must have been in the Hosta......I saw the parents there.....but I didn't see them feed it.....and now they are gone. I hope they come back and feed it.
SHOULD I PUT IT BACK IN THE NEST. I REMOVED THE DEAD BIRD AFTER I SAW THE OTHER ONE GONE?
Thanks
Kerri

I would let the parents deal with it themselves. It's all a part of nature and they know what to do.

Not an expert here, but I heard that if the ma ma bird or animal smells a human's scent they will no longer return to their nest at all. Not sure if this is true or not. :confused3 I personally wouldn't touch it.

I'm gonna leave it. It must have died in the last day or so....I will watch and make sure it is not attracting "things"
Thanks

It's not true, that's an old wives tale.

Maybe they will be like our birds in the garage. I swore they were dead, not moving a muscle and laying there looking really dead for awhile. Well, they are definitely not dead since they are all sitting on my fence now! :goodvibes

Usually if it's dead or damaged the mother or siblings will kick it out of the nest, so I wouldn't worry about it.

We did research with morning doves in grad school (way to many years ago) -they will preferentially feed the stronger one (usually the first hatched) and often allow the second to die...has to do with parental investment and risk of survival....do not remove the dead one. The doves are actually a bit parasitic and will 'use' the dead one.... it seems harsh to us, but guess that is why we have a bigger forebrain than they do!

In nature, it is rare for most of the offspring to survive in any given season.....unlike in Disney movies. Even if I am a biologist of sorts, I prefer Disney movies to real life!

The bird fell out of the nest and is now in my garden in front of the porch.....Should I put it in the nest. I saw the parents near it but I didn't see them feed it.
Thanks

Honestly you should just keep any pets away from it and leave it alone. I have a little one living near my house right now that can't fly well, but is thriving so mom is feeding it when I'm not around. I've seen in a few times in the past week and he's getting bigger for sure.

Ok....bird is gone now.....I hope it flew away. I didn't see any feathers scattered so maybe that is a good sign. I just wish I would see them in my yard:goodvibes.....Hopefully the little guy made it.
