Should I switch to SSR

My home resort is OKW. My wife and three kids (5, 12 and 13) are scheduled for a 2 bedroom at OKW 1/12/07-1/16/07. I have read some very good reviews of SSR recently and some not so good ones of OKW. We stayed at OKW in a studio in 1/06 with no problems. Should I try and see if SSR is available to switch to?

OKW is my favorite resort and it's less points. If you want to try SSR that is perfectly reasonable but to switch because of what's been posted on this board recently would be a dumb reason to change though it's hard to go wrong with any of the DVC resorts.

We all have our favorite resorts, each for different reasons. Our home resort is BWV, but we have stayed twice at SSR because it is so close to DTD and a really nice resort. Since you already have reservations save yourself the stress and just stay at your resort or talk it over with your family and take a vote. Either way you will have a wonderful time:wizard:

I'd stick with OKW. Having stayed at both, I can't see any reason to go to SSR if OKW is available. There is more room and it takes fewer points.

I agree with OKW Lover, if you already have ressies at OKW, stay there. SSR is beautiful and they have good management; but the staff at OKW is the best staff at WDW, bar none. These people will walk barefoot over broken glass to help you out!

You will be very happy at either resort.

Have fun!!!

Personally, I think it's nice to try out different resorts.

One question to ask yourself is, hypotehtically, if you stayed at SSR and found that you liked it more - would it mess your points up to not be satisfied with OKW? If you're totally happy with OKW, it might make sense to keep saving on point use.

I purchased DVC thinking I'd be happy spending one week at OKW each year, and after splitting a stay between OKW and SSR, realized that I really prefer SSR. Now I need to do a small add-on to make up the points difference.

Of course, you could also end up being one of the many happy OKW owners who stay elsewhere and find that they truly  OKW the most.

Unfortunately, we have not yet stayed at either OKW or SSR. We have seen both and think both have a really different flavors as do all the resorts. I wouldn't pay too much attention to posts, but if you have a desire to explore the other resorts then give SSR a try. We want to have stayed at all the resorts eventually. The problem is we have just fallen in love with VB and tend to go there most of the time. However, we are going back to HHI this summer for a due change. I don't even need to wish you good luck on your choice because you're gonna have a good vacation regardless.

I agree.

We have never stayed at SSR, though we have pool hopped over there a few times to check it out... We also stayed at OKW late this summer... (Around the same time some of those negative posts came out..)

Personally, we had a GREAT time at OKW... The CM's there are awesome... We got a 1BR in building 18 and were within walking distance to the pool...

The only critique I have about OKW is that it is BIG and spread out... (Though that is part of its charm..) When you are there, you do not feel as if you are at a hotel... Instead, you feel as if you are part of a community... As an aside, when SSR is complete, it will be just as big, if not bigger than OKW...

Also... If I remember correctly, some of those complaints were regarding mousekeeping and upkeep... One thing I learned while staying there in August was that mousekeeping and maintenance is shared between OKW and SSR.. So.. Any of those potentional problems you have at OKW, could in theory, exist at SSR. Switching will invariabily cost you money you weren't intending to spend.. (Closing costs, higher point costs, dues, etc..)

Personally... I would keep your home resort at OKW... The points are cheaper, and the rooms are slightly bigger...

I completely agree with Dean.. Don't switch based off of the reports of a few from this board... (Usually... The negative posts get more attention than the positive trip reports..) This board goes through phases in its resort bashing... From the ants at BCV, the restaurants at VB, to the broken closet doors at HHI, invariabily all of the DVC resorts take their licks here from time to time. IMO, things happen, but by and large all of the DVC resorts are great...

I agree word for word with Dean.

I've had more than 20 stays at OKW and only ever had a couple of minor maintenance/housekeeping issues which were dealt with quickly. I'm sure good stays are the norm, but they don't make such interesting reading as posts where things have gone wrong!

To me it's not even really resort bashing, just people sharing their personal feelings and views and I have no problem with that. You have to combine that info with all the other you have access to as well as your personal experience and situation. Then decide what's best for YOU.

Sorry about that... Bashing was not the correct term... Perhaps I should have rephrased it... :goodvibes

Not a problem however it seems many here are overly sensitive about their resorts and DVC in general. Personally I don't care if someone hates every aspect of a DVC resort I own or DVC in general. I'll only counter if they are technically inaccurate in my view.

Nope. I would stay at OKW. That balcony alone would seal the deal for me.

Stayed at both last year. We own at SSR. SSR is very beautiful and the rooms are really nice BUT we liked OKW better. I loved the relaxed feeling of the resort. I also really liked the size of the rooms. The balconies were really nice and big. SSR also didn't have great dining options. (Although, I do believe that has changed now.) The other thing and a big thing for us was being in Florida and not seeing a palm tree outside our window. They did a beautiful job staying with the theme of SS. But we love the palm trees! Good Luck with your decision. I think you will have a great time no matter where you stay.

One more quick thing....I do agree with some others who have posted that OKW is in need of some updating. We are going to disney in 18 days and are staying at OKW. We can't wait!!!

That OKW thread reminds me of a guy behind us on the DME going back to the airport. Carped about everything wrong with his resort, espcecially the mousekeeping(leads me to believe he was a renter and didn't know the rooms don't get cleaned everyday). He and his wife went on and on, another lady, her mom and I had to ask where they stayed, as we were singing the praises of SSR. Guess what? We all stayed at SSR!

Same thing with some of the resturants, I read some reviews "I''ll never go to "fill in the name" again, Oh it was terrible! And a couple of those places, I thought were great and plan on going again!

Everyone is different and has different tolerances for inconvience. Like a resturant wasn't to their liking "it ruined my vacation". I just say well we didn't like that place and we won't go back for a few trips. The long walks to anything at SSR, turned out to be rather short for my family.

Plus I think a lot of "stories" about WDW rooms, life, kids on any message board tend to be "exaggerated" a bit IMHO.
