Should I open Xmas gift from MIL now or wait until Xmas? UPDATE--IT'S OPEN!! Pg. 3

My MIL always gives us such bizarre gifts for Christmas, as many of you will remember.

Well, she brought our Christmas gift to us 2 weeks ago when she came for my daughter's communion. They live 6 months in Florida, and 6 months in upper Michigan. Apparantly they bought the gift in Florida and considering it's size, did not want to drag it back up to Michigan and then drag it back down here at Christmas (they came here on their way back up to MI for the summer).

Here's the scoop--

They never actually said we HAD to wait to open it.

The box is about 3 foot square.

It is fairly heavy (I'm guessing about 30 lbs.)

If I open it now, will I be disappointed that I didn't wait until Christmas?

What should I do?

You could take a peek and see if it is an appliance box.

if it were me i would wait till x-mas!!!! I know it may be hard since it is sitting there and you are curious to what it is. Many times when i was little i would sneak a peak as to what i was getting for x-mas then i would be disappointed that i didn't wait till x-mas to see what it was!
Although, is your mil going to be there for x-mas? If not then i guess talk to your spouse and maybe the two of you can open it!

Since it's closer to the past Christmas than it is to the forthcoming Christmas, I would consider it a late Christmas gift and open it now.

that way you dont' actually USE it until you are "allowed" to.

If it is ticking, set it outside and water it down with the hose pipe.

OPEN IT!!! very carfully though, so you can rewrap it if you need to. Do you have a dog, cat or kids? Blame it on the them! or when you're vacumming you could accidentally brush up against the box causing it to tear the paper & you didn't realize it until it was too late. I'd have to peak. However, if your MIL is like mine, some things are just not worth knowing.

Given your MIL's record with the weird gifts, I'd say open it now (carefully so you can re-wrap) to get over the shock while she's not there. Then you can practice for the next 7 mos. coming up with a pleasant expression & something suitable to say!

Take it to the nearest clinic and x-ray it. She could have put the real gift in a really neat box that you would like.

Open it! Giving someone a gift this far in advance of Christmas is basically telling them to go ahead and open it. Can't wait to see what she got you this time!!

My mother, God bless her, could never ever wait until Christmas. Not just for her own gifts, but for anything left at the house for one of her six kids by family members. She had to open each and every one, check it out, and rewrap it. My Dad knew she did this. One year he bought her a mix master. He took the box. Turned it inside out. Taped it shut with so much duct tape there is no way my Mom could have snuck a peek, then wrapped it in Xmas wrap.

Go ahead and look. It is way to long until Christmas.

Could you get your DH to open and rewrap it, and let him decide whether you should open it yourself now or wait until Christmas? That way if it's something you could really be using now you'll know, but if it's something that could/should wait you'll know that too.
