Long story short....I got married recently  and 4 days after we got back from our honeymoon, I was let go from my job of 6 years. Nice wedding gift huh? I filled out my unemployment paperwork with my maiden name since I hadn't legally changed it yet. After looking for another job, I decided to go to Nursing school. I also filled out the FAFSA paperwork with my maiden name. I just received my marriage certificate and can legally change my name to my husbands but I'm afraid it will cause issues with Unemployment and school.

Has anyone had any issues like this? Should I wait awhile to change it legally?

I would call but the wait is always like an hour and thought I'd ask here 1st :)

I would wait! I recently went back to nursing school and changed back to my maiden name for anonymity within the health care system!

Congratulations!!

Since you have your legal papers now, you should go back 'n correct the unemployment 'n FAFSA paperwork, start enjoyin' your privileges 'n rights! :goodvibes

Do you want to change it? If you do then go ahead and do it. Yea, it will be a hassle but it is part of the process.

I am definitely going to change it but I am afraid it will delay or cause problems. I already had a delay with unemployment because the SS said my name was incorrect...lol I've had the SAME name for 33 years! I'm gonna wait until unemployment is approved before I change that. I understand its gonna be a hassle but I don't want it to delay anything...

It can be expensive to make a name change on some professional licenses. You might want to investigate that before you get your nursing license.

In OH only cost is the Certified Marriage license cost and stamp to mail form and license to board of nursing. I'd personally save self trouble and get name change before getting nursing license but It's really not that hard to do it.

Were you married at the time you filled out the FAFSA? And have you changed it on your social security card?

If you were not married when you filled out the FAFSA--leave it alone. You can use your married name at school, it all comes in and out on your social. If any changes need to be made later, the school will make them. If you have not changed it on your social security card, you CAN'T change it on the FAFSA or you will have big mess. Your name and ss# have to match up or they will knock your ap out of the system.

As for your nursing license, you can always change to your married name before you graduate. Just make sure you use your married name when you take your licensing test, and make sure your ID's have your married name on them then too.

Once you go to the social security office and get your new card, you should be all set. Do this now. Don't wait. The longer you wait, the more of a pain it is to get it done. There shouldn't be any issues.

If it's not a big deal to you or your DH, you could just keep your maiden name. That's what I did. DH was highly supportive, so that helped, but it really made many things much easier. If social acquaintances call me by his last name, that's fine, too, but professionally, I'm still the same old me. :)
