Should I be scared to rent points?

I am looking into renting points and I am nervous about it. I have been coming to these boards for years, and have met some very nice, trustworthy people, yet for some reason I get butterflies in my tummy when
I think about cancelling our current CRO ressie and sending gobs of money to someone through the mail. How do these transactions usually work? How do I know I won't get burned?

I want to trust, but I'm scared! HELP!!

Well, I "rented" from another member, and I had butterflies in my stomach too. But she had to put the points into my account first. Once I verified they were there through MS, then I sent her money through paypal. It was quite easy, actually, and relieved when it was done! :)

I haven't heard of a bum deal yet from anyone here. I think everyone here is quite trustworthy.

Are you having someone make the ressie for you? Maybe you can verify with MS once the ressies are made that you are listed, if that will make you feel better. Or they can fax or email you a confirmation. If things don't work out on your end, the member can (most) always change the name or cancel the ressie.

Good luck, carrieberry.

BTW, where did you get your countdown from?

You can always ask for references if the member has rented before also.

Here's what I did.
1. Left my e-mail for renters to contact me directly.
2. Discussed payment/cancelation. We did one night stay after ressie was made, 1/2 balance 4 months out, balance due 60 days out. We did a non-refundable at 30 days out. If I cancel I would have to wait until the renter could find another rentee to get my refund.
3. I then called her on the phone and we both felt better speaking to each other.
4. Ressie made in my name, I confirmed this with MS.
5. Sent payment and then received confirmation form.
My renter is wonderful. We e-mail occassionally and are looking forward to BCV. Just get to know them a little and be sure you are comfortable with the agreement you make. You can also get references and check them out on these boards. Hope this helps.

I had rented points sooooo many times that we finally decided to buy our own piece of DVC. I can honestly say I never had a problem with anything. The person would make a ressie for me and then send me the confirmation from MS. I would then send them a check. I did look for members who didn't make a business out of renting points. I thought they would be a bit more trustworthy. Good luck!

Scared, no. Cautious, yes. Nervous is understandable; make it work for you.

-- Make sure you have a firm understanding of the arrangement, including cancellation contingencies, and that it's fair to both sides.
-- I suggest not canceling your CRO ressie until all issues concerning the points rental have been resolved, including direct verification that the reservation has been made in your name. If it really is a CRO ressie, you can get a full refund when canceling more than 5 days in advance.
