Elwood Blues- I get the distinct impression you are baiting me...and I'm not exactly sure why...I've certainly never stated this comparison before...

I think the analogy between Bush and Hitler is a bad one, and I guess if I were a Bush supporter I would find it insulting. But because I'm not...I just find it to be an inappropriate historical analogy.

I suppose that gives you enough to throughly flame me now? I'd hate to disappoint.

Actually the people who are most ticked off are the gay and lesbian groups which is really ridiculous if you ask me. People need to calm down a little, you can't say anythign these days without someone being offended...people stress too much about the little things... lighten the heck up!

No, I'm not trying to bait *you* specifically. I just thought I'd throw out an example of what *I* felt was an insulting and inappropriate characterization. But there is CLEARLY a double standard when it comes to what one side(Dems) can say with impunity while the other side(Reps) get's raked over the coals for less harsh comments.

You are a good example of what I mean.

You said "If I were a women in the Calif. Legislature, I'd sure want an apology. The phrase assumes that an effective legislator is not only a manly man, but a man period. No one finds that's insulting?"

Which means to me that you find this comment insulting and would except an apology but to characterize Bush as Hitler is just an inappropriate historical analogy.

Nothing like a topic staying the course. I think we were talking about the Governor of California's use of a term from an SNL skit to describe Democratic legislatures. Personally, I don't think the issue is so much that he use it, but the reaction of the Democrats:

Democrats said Schwarzenegger's remarks were insulting to women and gays and distracted from budget negotiations. State Sen. Sheila Kuehl said the governor had resorted to "blatant homophobia."

Homophobia? Get real. Whether or not you thought the comment was appropriate or not, you totally missed the point if you thought it was an attack on gays an women. If anyone remembers the original SNL skit, it was a parody o Arnold himself and the gym rats that spend hours pumping iron.

I do think that sometimes politicians get way too sensitive about things.

Shfahz....... uh, Arnold to use the phrase, then it has been inappropriate to use on SNL for 15 years, & yet I have never heard the "intelligensia" complain that it was homophobic humor then.

The Democratic majority leader of the Califoirnia Legislature said it best this morning on the "Today" Show....... "it's no big deal".

His new budget for Ca. is really tough on people who need services. I really wish he would visit some people who rely on their home care workers. I really wish he would put on a correctional officer's uniform and wade into one of the prisons. I wish he would sit in a public school who's county isn't flush with tax funds.... maybe then he would make different budget considerations.

as a former california resident, i hope californians don't take offense at my statements, but with regards to california's budget woes, imho, it's really the citizens of california who have shot themselves in the foot with all the different propositions you guys have passed over the past 25+ years. i think it's sort of ridiculous to solely blame the politicians (of either party) on that one.

He also compared the governator to Whoopie Goldberg. Whats with that? Whoopie isn't a public official she can say whatever she wants.

I don't think some politicians get way to sensitive about things, I think some politicians "act" like they are sensitive about a comment or statement, just to throw some sort of jab at "the other side" :yes: , although I imagine some may have truly been offended.

I don't find Arnold's comment rude or offensive. But then again ... I'm an Arnold/body building fan don't know much about his political stands, so I'm seeing things from a whole different perspective. LOL! He's been associated with the phrase for years and years and years. That phrase and Arnold go hand and hand because of the way he was made light of during the SNL Hans and Frans skits.

*I think I might* feel differently if a different politician used the phrase because it's not a phrase that's been used to poke fun at them for years. Maybe that's just my Arnold bias showing though.

You'll get no argument from me about either side sayings stupid things. But the Dems seems to have cornered the "stupid" market right now.

He can call anyone anything he wants. He can then deal with the consequences. I would rather someone NOT apologize rather then make in insincere apology to clear the political waters.

This is a term from SNL and given the governers humor I think it was meant to be a funny jab much like the numerous jabs taken by Bush and Kerry. Everyone can find something to be offended by if they look hard enough.

Is the apology now only due when the offender understands the offence? I step on your toes, but it does not hurt me, so tough? Wouldn't it be nice if we could revert to the days when if, someone said something that offended others, one could simply say it was unintentional and apologize. Instead of all this...yeah well....quit being such a baby about it..you deserved it...it felt good to say it and I am glad I did. How adult is that?

We need to take a serious look at where this is leading. This " say anything you want" mentality. I have often puzzled over why liberal has become a dirty word. But it certainly has. Last week a Mississippi newspaper printed a letter to the editor calling for all liberals to be sent to the terrorists, specifically the ones who cut off heads. Can any of you imagine a newspaper printing such a hateful thing if it were directed at any other group?

This trend needs to stop and stop now. And the first step is for politicians of all colors to stop refusing to ever apologize when they name call.
