Shorts to dinner

You actually believe we should go back to the gool old days when people were judged by the types of clothes that they wear? I believe society has figured out that people should be judged by the content of their character. Or even better yet shouldn't be judged at all. There is a higher power that I feel should do the judging.

I never said or implied this. There are clothes to play in the sand box and clothes to eat at a nice restaurant and they are NOT the same.

In the same vein, the character of the person and their decision to abide by their host's request to wear a certain attire judges them surely?

If you respect your fellow people, a host, then they will respect you.
If you disrespect others around you then that disrespect can only come back to bite you in the ***!

Holy Freakin' CRAP!:scared1:
Good Lord, excuse me for simply making the observation..and my personal opinion..that I think it's a bit odd, that they allow jeans..but not shorts. To ME..they are equally as casual, and I am baffled by the exclusion of one over the other.
I didn't even say my husband would wear shorts..he probably would not..simply because he was asked not to. (not the rebel type:laughing:)

That being said..It is MY opinion that it's kind of weird. Last I heard, I thought I was entitled to an one.:confused3, but I don't know anymore.:headache:
My apologies to anyone who was offended by my observation, as it was certainly not my intention to do so. I have never seen so many turn so nasty..so fast. Seriously..it's a Disney message board. Not life and death. We are talking about shorts and jeans right?...

Again, I am new to this forum, having only posted now and again while attempting to plan a cruise. I have found most of the thoughts and information very valuable and insightful.
THIS..this is NUTS.
It appears I "stepped in it" so to speak, when it came to this subject. I never would have guessed so many panties could be in a bunch over something so ridiculous. :rolleyes1
What can I say..:confused3 I'm a little slow.:guilty: Obviously this subject is like the re-fillable drinks or the pool hopping. Duly noted. :sad2:

lol, i wouldn't worry about the thread. i don't think anyone is mad its just one of those threads that will go on for 20 pages and the debate never gets solved. i certainly don't take offence to anything anyone says. we all are entitled to our opinions and while mine may be right for me it may not be right for others.
and you are right, it is like the refillable drinks and pool hopping but on the cruise threads its tipping and cloths that are the hot buttons. its all good. sorry if we made you feel bad.

I'm not who you quoted but I would like to chime in. I don't think people should be judged by what they wear but they will be judged on how they dress. Think about people who wear dirty clothes, ill fitting clothes or inappropriate things (very revealing, obscenities on tee-shirts). Those are not people, for the most part, I want in my social circle. If someone doesn't own or cant afford expensive clothes that is fine. Anyone can still dress appropriately in public.

I consider the host the Disney Corporation. As with any corporation they only thing they generally care about is how many dollars they can get from your pocket. I agree with you though that they should have a dress code standard in Palo.

I would consider your hosts the Crew Member's aboard that are serving you, and not try to think of them as a small part of a big wheel.
They are living with you on the ship, unlike at the park's, and are with you on your vacation for the duration so they (for the most part) try to make it the best trip you can have! They don't get to go home after 8 hour's at work! lol!
The tipped CM DO care about the dollar's though! :rotfl2:

Not sure about your Palo comment, as there is a defined and enforced dress code at Palo and Remy?

tried to send you a pm but the system will not let me

I called DCL last year before our cruise to ask about shots for kids and was told it wa fine. They said they realize most kids don't have a week's wor of dress pants. And as I told them, my son looks better in nice shorts and a collard shirt than jeans. They said it was fine. Not sure why I was concerned because once on board we saw men in sloppy shorts and t-shirts. And we aren't wasting room in suitcases this year with dressy clothes formal night as most did not dress up.

What I don't get about this is why is it such a big deal to people what other people war in the dinning rooms. How many times have people posted that they have actually been told by a head server in an MDR that shorts are ok, but yet people keep insisting that you must dress up. If you really want to dress for dinner every night and see everyone else dress liked that cruise on a line were they enforce the dress code, and top complaining because Disney doesn't.

I agree:thumbsup2
I would rather have dinner with someone who treats me with courtesy than someone who is rude and dresses up.

This is one of the most ridiculous arguments on DIS and I honestly don't get it. Someone posted in another thread about letting their son wear shorts and someone responded that by forcing him to dress nice they would help hin become a real man. Seriously? I plan to dress appropriately for my cruise but I swear, a part of me wants to wear Daisy Duke's and a belly baring shirt just to shock the sanctimonious sticks in the mud! You speak volumes about your own character by judging others by what they do or don't wear. And the simple fact is, as others have pointed out, if they wanted to create the mood or ambiance for the MDR then they would not allow jeans and when you asked or called or checked they would not say shorts were fine!

And DCL may be "hosting" me but I paid heavily for the benefit, so I don't think that is an accurate comparison. And I never wear shorts, or hardly ever wear jeans for that matter, but this argument is beyond stupid. There are clearly people with little else to worry about!

:tiptoe: Clothes and tipping..got it. ::yes:: Thanks. ;)

Even I would draw the line if they hired the actors from Jersey Shore to staff the kids clubs.

I understand and that's the point. People ask the shorts questions without any malice intended and get slammed basically. What they are asking is still appropriate and acceptable attire FOR MOST PLACES THAT WOULD ALLOW JEANS! And it is a cruise, possibly in the summer, probably in a tropical climate. It is a valid question-I just despise most of the reponses!

I don't think anyone is speaking volumes about their character by judging anyone else by what they wear, but by what they chose to ignore to suit their desires against the request of the host.
You might have paid "heavily" as you put it, but the request's of DCL are laid out on the website, and in print on your cruise doc's.
You choose to cruise with them, you sign a legal doc with them, if you choose not to abide by the request that is up to you.
(and in fairness that is between you and the cruise line, not you and other's on the DIS), but you can't really get upset when some people on the DIS have differing opinions to your's when you choose to not abide and say so and they think you should?!

I agree with all of this completely and until Disney actually turns someone away from the MDR's because they are in shorts I say wear them and don't give a care what other people on this board say. Heck wear a toga on pirate night if you want.

I don't really see a problem with someone wearing a nice pair of shorts in to the dinning rooms. I've worn shorts in the dinning room as have people I have dined with, I just don't see the problem. Now if someone came in in there bating suit, I would have a problem with that.

As I said in my original post, I (and my family) will follow the dress code because it works for us. We prefer to wear what is considered acceptable, but could care less how others choose to spend their vacation. What upsets me is not that other people have a different opinion, but that people can't just answer the question without giving their opinions. Obviously no one is ever going to agree. There should be a standard statement of "DCL says no shorts, but many report wearing them and not being asked to leave the dining room".
