Shorts to dinner

I have 1 pair of nice jeans and I always wear them to Cracker Barrel. I call them my Cracker jeans!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

For some reason Cracker jeans reminds me of the jeans my 80 year old patients wear that are up to their chest (jeans a la Ferb). :upsidedow

OP, There were lots of polos and golf shirts in the dining rooms on the Dream cruise we took this past year, but I sort of contributed that to the short length of cruise and the fact that the Bahamas are pretty laid back. Shorts didn't bother me, but I agree with PPs, and we will continue to stick to the requested dress code.

Requested - what an interesting word choice. Less imposing than required, but more forceful than suggested. I think there is a reason they use that word. If you look at it this way, we are guests on the ship. Most guests (gracious guests anyway) would go out of their way to honor their host's requests. And most hosts (gracious hosts) would go out of their way to honor the requests of their guests. DCL has always gone above and beyond to honor my family's requests, no matter how insignificant they would seem. I think I (and my family) will reciprocate by honoring their requests of us.

LoriABil,

I think if I spent a year trying to compose an equivalent post to yours, no, two years composing it, it still wouldn't even come close to the thought, purpose, meaning and eloquence of yours! :worship:

What Lori said!

Nicely put.

Several years ago we were stuck on vacation with an uncle (invited along by my mother-in-law, his sister) He's one of those rellies that make you roll your eyes, but you have to put up with him because he's family. He wore a bright orange Hawaiian shirt with shamrock suspenders several days in a row, and yes, it smelled like he had been wearing that combo several days in a row.

Yes, DCL will put up with "family" like that, but why would you want to act like that family member?

I find the discussion interesting in that I eat out a lot and at some of the nicest restaurants in the country. At all but about a dozen restaurants jeans can be seen on a number of patrons but no shorts.

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize it was a sensitive subject. I was just wondering because we will be going on our 1st Disney cruise and other families I spoke with had told me their husband and kids wore shorts to dinner even though it said no shorts. Myself, I like to dress up to go out:)

What people wear depends on a lot on where you live. On the east coast and in the south seems like most dress up at nice places. On the west coast not so much. In Seattle most people don't bother dressing up even at the nicest places. You don't see shorts but that is only because it is usually cold here.

Also not sure how you can compare the main dining rooms with a nice restaurant. I've found them equivalent to Applebees as far as food quality.

my thought?? if what people are wearing, in any way, annoys, bothers, gets in the way of your enjoyment, your vacation must suck. i don't care what you have on as long as everything is covered. i'm busy having a good time, not worrying about what others have on. i'll talk to you anyways....rules or no rules. not for me to judge.
mellow and just have a good time. its not like your food will taste worse or the conversation will not be as enjoyable.
as a pp said.....it is what it is.

There is NO way you can compare the food on the ships to the gruel they serve at Applebees. I'm not saying the ships are 5, or even 4, star restaurants but the is much better and they have MUCH nicer atmosphere than the national chain restaurants.

No not true at all....I find it rather sad that people can not dress appropriately when requested. Our society has become way to casual in the way they dress for Church, dining etc..

5 or 4 star are you out of your mind I would call them a 3 at most. If they were 4 star there would be no kids in it at all. If the MDR's are 5 star then what are palo and remmy? never mind I goofed up on this one

Well, that is what DCL asks.

OP-Would you wear shorts to a nice restaurant at home? Look at the MDRs on the ship the same way you would a nicer sit down place on land.

I think it depends on what you define as a nice restaurant and weather or not that was has a dress code. How many restaurants do you really see any where that require men to wear a suit in anymore?

but is that how we judge? would you not shake my hand if i wore my best jeans to church? i find it rather sad that people have to approve of what others wear.
again, we all have differing opinions, i just don't see where it should be a big issue if someone does not abide by 'the rules'. i understand what your saying and i do not mean to make lite of it. i just can't get that upset about it, to me its a non issue. to many bigger things to worry about and certainly not while i'm on vaca. i'm going to have a good time no matter what anyone else wears....

The quality of the food is another discussion, the ambience and atmosphere DCL are trying to create is where the attire request is made IMO.

The food served to me wouldn't be tainted or taste worse depending on what others at the table were wearing, or at other tables around be were wearing, but the ambiance and atmosphere would suffer.
They have clearly stated please no tank tops, swim wear or shorts for dinner.
Disrespecting that could or might effect table talk if someone has blatantly ignored that request. It show's a disregard to the Host IMO, and the values that person holds.

Holy Freakin' CRAP!:scared1:
Good Lord, excuse me for simply making the observation..and my personal opinion..that I think it's a bit odd, that they allow jeans..but not shorts. To ME..they are equally as casual, and I am baffled by the exclusion of one over the other.
I didn't even say my husband would wear shorts..he probably would not..simply because he was asked not to. (not the rebel type:laughing:)

That being said..It is MY opinion that it's kind of weird. Last I heard, I thought I was entitled to an one.:confused3, but I don't know anymore.:headache:
My apologies to anyone who was offended by my observation, as it was certainly not my intention to do so. I have never seen so many turn so nasty..so fast. Seriously..it's a Disney message board. Not life and death. We are talking about shorts and jeans right?...

Again, I am new to this forum, having only posted now and again while attempting to plan a cruise. I have found most of the thoughts and information very valuable and insightful.
THIS..this is NUTS.
It appears I "stepped in it" so to speak, when it came to this subject. I never would have guessed so many panties could be in a bunch over something so ridiculous. :rolleyes1
What can I say..:confused3 I'm a little slow.:guilty: Obviously this subject is like the re-fillable drinks or the pool hopping. Duly noted. :sad2:

I wouldn't even wear shorts to "chain" restaurants, but that is just me. I wear jeans to those type of places most times.

And DCL does not require or even "request" a suit except for formal night. Not even in Palo.

We went to a steak house last week and I was surprised at how many people we saw in jeans. My DH wore slacks and a polo type shirt and I wore a nice pair of pants (do you call woman's pants slacks also :confused3) and a nice shirt. Most people were dressed like us but there were a number underdressed, IMHO.

EDIT; for what it's worth, the only reason I even noticed what so many others were wearing is the way our table sat I could see most people as they entered the restaurant. On the cruise I really only noticed what the other people at our table and those right next to us in line were wearing. I think it is sad that so many people dress so casually for events these days, but it does not take away from my overall enjoyment.

You actually believe we should go back to the gool old days when people were judged by the types of clothes that they wear? I believe society has figured out that people should be judged by the content of their character. Or even better yet shouldn't be judged at all. There is a higher power that I feel should do the judging.
