Shorts to dinner

Having 4 kids, clothing gets really expensive. My son constantly out-grows his pants and shorts. I live in Texas so he mostly wears shorts. I will have one or two pairs of pants that fit him this summer but I'm not going to buy 7 pairs of pants so that he can wear them for one week and then outgrow them by time winter comes around and he needs more pants. There's no point. I have so many items of clothing that got worn one or two times, never to be worn again over the years. He has plenty of dressy shorts (his school has a dress code- polos and dress shorts) so he will mostly wear those except on formal and semi-formal nights. We will not skip the MDRS because I want to experience them. In the end I am going to do what works best for my family within reason. I don't feel that a child wearing dressy shorts will signficantly affect my fellow diners. My husband and I, and my two daughters (the fashionistas that love dressing up on regular basis and have plenty of dressy clothes that get used enough to justify the cost) will be dressed up pretty much very night. It's just our son's who don't regularly wear dress pants that won't be. I wish the rule-following faction here would be a little more understanding of the challenges of packing for and buying clothes for a large family. If I got myself all freaked out about following the rules exactly "out of respect" I could easily cost myself a few extra hundred dollars just to say I was a good girl and did exactly as I was supposed to while many families I am sitting next to at dinner saved themselves the money and had just as nice a evening as me, while wearing their dress shorts.

Why would you need 7 pair? You can have him wear whatever you want but shouldn't he be able to wear the same pants more than once? If they are only for dinner that's 2 hours TOPS. I just don't understand why people try to pack 2 or 3 full outfits for each person for each day.

I think that the crux of the "no shorts requested" is the matter of taste.
You can say, "But, they're nice shorts!" however, YOUR idea of nice may be conservative Bermuda shorts, while another's idea of nice is her Daisy Dukes with the rhinestone trim. Taste & style - everyone's idea is different.

Most of the "live and let live - wear what you want" people would, I suspect, be singing a VERY different tune when their tablemate in her Daisy Dukes bends over to pick up her dropped fork and bares her whole tush to the hubbies & sons!!

Other than overly revealing clothes (all kinds of revealing, the pretty and the ugly) or clothes with offensive messages, can someone explain to me why they or anyone should care what some else wears? Honestly, I dont know how these threads get so much steam. I would much rather have a tablemate in shorts and a t-shirt on formal night that is a friendly, kind person than someone who think they are better than someone else because of what they are wearing.

If you are are so precious that your evening is runined by the sight of someone in shorts, I invite you not to cruise on DCL, because they do not ban shorts. If you do cruise DCL, please god dont sit anywhere near me.

To be honest the dress code does surprise me a little, I understand the no swimwear... nobodn would want to eat next to me in my speedos but what does confuse me is that its prefered that I dont wear dress shorts but can wear jeans.... the jeans thing surprises me

Ultimately no matter how many times this type of discussion is rehashed over and over on here, along with the other 'hot button' topics, each guest is going to do what they want to do. Getting worked up over it and being rude to other posters, or what some perceive as rude, is not going to change some people's thoughts on various topics.

Just my 2 cents, but different parts of the country dress differently. In SoCal where I am, you will see nice shorts with nice shirts in nice restaurants, expensive restaurants, all the time, especially in Palm Desert. This included the men. Then there's Hawaii, all the men wear nice shorts. Bahamas wouldn't be much different. My son doesn't even own nice pants, just jeans and a ton of shorts. He wears them all the time when we go to nice restaurants, with nice button-down shirts. I think nice shorts are nicer than jeans.

He will be wearing shorts on the cruise. I'm not buying him pants just for this. My DH owns nice work pants, so will probably wear those.

Our travel agent said to dress comfortably and casually. That's the way Disney is. Cruise wear!

As for jeans being okay, per Disney's suggestion, no shorts, I guess jeans are fine. But then what about exercise pants? They are pants after all. (I don't think they are fine. Just throwing it out there...)

Agreed on different standards in different places! There are even shorts at the nicer restaurants at WDW.

Simple difference, of course. DCL requests you not wear shorts in the MDRs. WDW does not request you do not wear shorts in their restaurants. Sounds very easy to understand to me.

Now that is what they should ban. Too many of the nice clothes that people wear reveal way too much. There are many clothes that technically fit the DCL requests but I don't think show any class. I don't care to see some women's clevage while eating. This isn't a strip club. Also some of the men who wear those lime green suits. Simply appalling.

I agree that shorts should not be worn in the dining rooms because DCL requests it, but I have long given up fighting it. I insisted my FIL wear pants to dinner (he put on the big pout) only to be surrounded by shorts every night (even on Semi-Formal night)...so, I give up! I even inquired to our server about it and he looked at me like I had 3 heads and said "Of course shorts are fine...everything is fine".
If DCL won't inforce their own policy, who am I to enforce it?[QUOTE]

You won't find ANY server telling a paying customer NO. It's not their job, and they'd lose their job if they did.

To answer the shorts in the dining room question:

SURE.....GO AHEAD. AFTER ALL, IT'S ONLY A REQUEST BY YOUR HOST.:confused3

And while you're at it, you may as well bring a 6 pack of beer to dinner with you, and light up a cigarette with your after-dinner coffee.

Oh....and bring all 6 of your kids to the adult pool....even the one in diapers.....it's a DISNEY CRUISE afterall, and for FAMILIES.

Go ahead and save those lounge chairs, the heck with anyone else who might want one.
And how about saving seats in the theater.....sure....it's okay.....you WERE there first, afterall.

What the heck......go ahead and break ALL rules. That will make DCL just about as "special" as Carnival and all the other cruise lines Disney cruisers love to bash.

Don't you know "It's all about ME all the time".??????.......ME ME ME...MINE MINE...MINE.....GIMMEE....GIMMEEE....GIMMMEEEEEE!!!!!!!:scared1:

In general, I don't believe most diners on DCL in the MDRs care what others wear. Some do, but I bet most don't.

Not relevant whether or why anyone else would care. Disney requests you not wear shorts or tank tops in the dining room. Those who choose to ignore that request have their reasons (who cares, my vacation, costs money, I'm uncomfortable in pants, the board told me it is okay, etc.)...but they still choose to ignore that request.

I know our vacation isn't spoiled by t-shirts in the dining room. It would be nice if folks honored the request by Disney, but some don't. We don't worry about others and we have a blast.

I for one do not care what you wear for dinner, but yoor host has made requests so I would try to abide by them.
For what its worth I have always found the dining rooms to be freezing so they may be more comfortable in pants anyway.
Just my two cents oh and I do not like jeans really nice ones or not for dinner but the big Mouse does not care so wear them if you like :cool1:

This issue has run its course, as usual, and now it's time to close the thread.
