My dd14 is in 8th grade and we have recently discovered (through testing) that she has short term memory problems. She was tested both at school and with her Neuro/Developmental Doc.

She has an IEP for school. She has ADD.
This is the last paragraph in her report form school.
I am hoping someone here could help me figure out how to help her!!

The results of the cognitive assessment indicates that _____'s working memory is a relative academic strength; she is able to hold information in her immediate awareness and congitively act upon it in an efficient manner provided she is familiar with the information.

Her cognitive efficiency, however, is a relative weakness; her ability to use and follow through with new information is compromised relative to her peers.

Likewise, her short term memory is a relative weakness. ______ will have to use her rehearsal techniques to improve her short term memory. The implications of ______ cognitive functioning suggest _______ will have to put forth extra effort to gain and maintain academic proficiencies as the demands of her school work increase.

She is in 8th grade and most of our IEP meeting the other day was to talk about these test results and plan her HS career. We never really went into HOW myself and dh can help her.
I was hoping someone here may be able to give me some ideas.
Thanks!

Has she had an auditory processing evaluation? If not that should be done. Often for children with a strong EF (executive function) preference for visual non-linear processing tyipical linear input (speech and reading) is particularly difficult which effects comprehension, memory, discrimination and organizational and output capabilites.

Visual reinforcers can help a lot, as can EF skill training and techniques

My daughter was just diagnosed with short term memory issues but she is only in the 2nd grade. I do know that we can call a meeting anytime. I would contact the school and set up another meeting. Go in with a list of questions and ask them how you can be helping your daughter at home. I do know we have modified how my daughter is taught. She is being taught in ways that utilize more areas of the brain at the same time. Like with math we are doing touch point math but also she is learning math facts that have been set to music. We are also doing a lot of visual/hand on appoaches to english/spelling/writing. Good luck, I know how hard it is to not know how to help your child. It is frustrating. Definatly call the school and request another meeting.

I am not sure if she had an auditory processing eval done. who would do that, her school or her Dr?

As far as the school helping me, they are not much help

Very few schools would do this, I knowlegeable pediatician or a neurologist could set it up.

Have you requested a full IDEA evaluation from the school?
