Hi all,

This may not be that politically correct but; I know my DH would love to have a go at firing a magnum (not the ice lolly...lol).

I'm sure on previous visits to the states we have seen shooting ranges but are these the sort of places just for US citizens who own a hand gun or can you go in off the street and loan a gun and shoot!

DH is in the Navy and is trained in the SA-80 (riffle) and 9mm pistol but he has this idea about firing a magnum...must be a man thing!

I though it would be a nice surprise and something a little different...

I can tell you a bit about this as Scott did it in 2002. He, his father and soon to be BIL (Simon) went along. They handed over their passports as deposit and were shown how to use a small handgun (the smallest most basic thing there is.) The instructions were basically how to load it, how to take the safety off and pull the trigger and, most importantly, don't point it at people! Not particularly detailed, just enough to be able to use it. The bullets are real and I think they were given about 100 each but you could buy more, as many as you wanted. Scott stuck with the little gun, as did his dad but Simon wanted to try something bigger. He used bigger and bigger handguns, then a machine gun. Finally, and I swear to God this is true, he was given an Uzi Sub-Manchine gun. Bear in mind that a few hours before he had never fired a gun before!!! They were all totally shocked and to add the icing to the cake, a few rows down were a family with their small son (10 ish) who was also shooting.

It sounds like it could be a lot of fun but also pretty scary if they're willing to hand over an Uzi in exchange for your passport deposit! I don't know if they've tightened the security now but this was almost exactly 1 year after 9/11 so I would have thought they'd have been at maximum security then?

We go shooting every year in Fort Myers. Last year I didn't have my passport but the guy was quite happy with my driving licence. They seem to have a very laid back attitude to the whole thing, not too sure I agree with that!
