Shooting at Va Tech

Omg. I so wished this kind of stuff would not be apart of this. The fact that people knew he was troubled and did not take action is to much to think about. If someone writes a paper about hurting others actions should be taken. I can not imagine the pain and anger the families are feeling.:confused3

But we think about it with the benefit of hindsight. And remember, he was referred for some kind of help, and I am under the impression that he was receiving or had received some.

Sadly, here's a prediction: get ready for some major lawsuits against the school - not just because of the issue of security updates yesterday, but also about whether warning signals from the gunman got enough "due diligence."

"Professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university's English department, said she did not personally know the gunman. But she said she spoke with Lucinda Roy, the department's director of creative writing, who had Cho in one of her classes and described him as "troubled."

"There was some concern about him," Rude said. "Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things and you never know if it's creative or if they're describing things, if they're imagining things or just how real it might be. But we're all alert to not ignore things like this."

She said Cho was referred to the counseling service, but she said she did not know when, or what the outcome was.
"

Creative people are often "dark", It must have been pretty chilling for them to recommend counseling.

The ceremony at Virginia Tech just started and is live on CNN (and I am sure most other news stations) if anyone is interested in tuning in. They just played the National Anthem and I am already in tears.
The university president just got a standing ovation...very sad.

Oh the poor families....may they all find the strenght they need to pull through this tragedy.

Well there goes half of the tv shows, movies, books and music in the world.

Alot more has to be looked at, besides the writing a person does. Lifestyle, actions, activities are just a few.

Sadly, and from my own experience, I can tell you that mental health services in this country are SEVERELY lacking. Even if you WANT treatment it is hard to find and get any kind of financial assistance for. If you don't even know you have issues, it is REALLY difficult for anyone to get you the help you need. It's often just too little.

Yeah, it must have been exceptionally bad. My degree is in English and I took several creative writing classes: poetry, screenwriting and creative nonfiction. In particular, screenwriting submissions by my classmates were often rather violent. It would have had to take some very very very dark, weird, sinister stuff to have the professor report it.

If you are interested, you can read his writings at The Smoking Gun website. I will not direct link it here though.

I wonder if he wrote of suicide? Then they would be compelled to recommend counseling. We shall see. Monday morning quarter backing is easy, there will undoubtedly be varying opinions on whether these writings should have gotten more attention or were within, what most of us consider, the "norm."

Who's watching the convocation?

What was going on with the people they just escorted out????

I think it was the young guy...did he just break down with emotion??? I saw President Bush turn around and put his arm on him.

How very sad........

I was just coming to ask the same thing... I missed what happened:sad1:

It looked like they were physically holding up one of the men. I cannot imagine what that was. It has to be something bad.....

It was a family member who became very upset. The school set up a backroom for family members to watch via tv, but some opted to be out in the crowd.

According to CNN, the young man in the white striped shirt was so upset he passed out and collapsed to the floor. He had to be helped to his feet and then they escorted him out with his family members :sad1:

Heartbreaking... absolutely heartbreaking. There are no words :guilty:
