Butlers, Floresheim, Bakers---these were Shoe stores where they actually PUT THE SHOE ON YOUR FOOT!!:earseek: First, they would MEASURE your foot, than go in the back and get the shoes you wanted, sit down in front of you, and use the Shoe Horn thingy, and ask how you liked them.::yes:: I know, I know, I am OLD!:space:

Kinney, Thom McCann, Buster Brown, New York City Shoe Store where all the shoes were only $9.99, I had a pair of pumps in every color of the rainbow! Now I'd break my neck if I wore them!

I used to like the Wild Pair too!

I LOVED Bakers - they always had the coolest shoes. I can still remember exactly where they were in the mall (that is no longer there).

Going shoe shopping used to be a pretty luxurious experience. Now you just roam the aisles until you find a box of shoes you like, then try to find a spot to try them on - YOURSELF!

Here I am waxing nostalgic again...;)

We still have floursheim shoes stores in London they are very expensive but well worth the money in my opinion.

We had a Butlers in the mall. Actually I believe Butlers dyed all of my shoes to match all 4 of my prom dresses.

That was my 11th grad prom and 12th grade prom and DH's 11th and 12th grade proms.

we had bakers for years an years then they closed for almost 10 years then I'm at the mall the other day and they had re-opened but the shoes don't seem to be of the same quality.

Bakers was good but my favorite was Chandlers. Remember them anyone? I always loved the style and quality of their shoes.

I think we still have a Bakers at our local mall, unless the name has changed and I never noticed. Ill have to check it out the next time Im there.

We have a Bakers. They closed about 5 years ago then reopened about a year ago.

Maybe I'm spoiled but the shoes stores I go to still do this. Where do you all go?

Same here. I even worked at The Sports Authority in footwear for about two years and we asked for the size, if they didn't know we would measure, go into the back, bring out the shoes.

We usually didnt put them on, but we would lace them. If it was a little kid I would always help them.

Me too, most of the time.

But I also remember a time when shoe stores had these exray machines. You put on the shoes and stood up and your feet when in this opening at the bottom of a box the size of a dishwasher. You could look through the top and see an exray of your feet in the shoes. Talk about a health hazard !

OK...this dates me...I remember the shoe stores that had the goose that laid the golden egg. After you were fitted with the butt-ugly brown shoes you stood in front of this red goose on a special mat which triggered the egg laying. Out popped a golden egg filled with treats! Made those ugly brown shoes a little nicer. And yes, we too had to endure the foot xray machine. All kinds of gizmos & gadgets! :D

Remember Striderites........... when my boys were young EVERY kid had a pair of them. My pediatrician told me to keep the kids in sneakers instead. She thought they were much better for "growing" feet. My mother was horrified that my son didn't have a pair of Striderites. She thought I was a terrible mother and that my son would never learn to walk.:earseek:

When I was little (many moons ago!!!) that was the only way we bought our shoes.:D

I remember Wild Pair too.

When DH & I first started dating, we would cruise through the mall during our lunch hour. DH had a shoe fetish -- honestly. He use to pull me into the stores and have me try on all sorts of shoes. I bought what he liked back then ( ). I had more shoes than I ever needed. Now I wonder how I ever walked in them. Those heels were a killer.

Now, just give me a comfy pair of gym shoes and I'm all set. :D

I forgot all about Bakers. I really liked it.

How about Striderite, are they still around?
