She's Headed to High School, a June 2024 WL Trip Report: Post Trip DL Update 10/11

Thanks for the bonus update! We've been to DL twice and I would love to go back! Your getaway sounded perfect. Lots of fun and good food. Agree that Space Mountain and Pirates are superior to the WDW versions. I loved Screamin' too. Thanks for sharing! Next trip - no Jeep. Cruise?

I love your DL trip report. It makes a big difference to have some familiarity with Disneyland.
So let's share our weekend. We were able to secure a point rental reservation at the Grand Californian back in November for Allie's birthday weekend. When it came around, we decided to take advantage of a three day park ticket deal with one park per day.
I didn't realize that there was a DVC component at DL. Is it like WL and Copper Creek with the DVC section attached to the main resort? The three-day park ticket sounds like a good deal.
Then we did another nearby DL classic, Snow White's Something Adventure, which is a super light weight version of 7DMT, with a simple track ride instead of a roller coaster.
We ended up doing several of the classic fantasyland rides. It was fun to do a few that they don't have at MK anymore. I really enjoyed them.
Then we headed for a ride which is vastly better in DL, since it is the original "double drop and ride it all the way back to the top" Pirates of the Carribean.
This version was so much better than WDW's version. I am totally spoiled by the DL ride. We also enjoyed Indianna Jones. It is much better than the dinosaur ride at AK.
We had a DVC studio, but the room was plenty big enough for the four of us on a short trip.
Did the studio have the same layout as the WDW DVCs, with only one sink in the bathroom?
We went straight in to the park through the dedicated entrance from the Grand Californian to California Adventure. This gate is just for hotel guests, but it is super convenient. We went straight for Cars Land, which I will say is my favorite of any Disney land.
Cars Land was amazing at night. Pixar Place was great at night, too. We only had one day park hoppers, and this was my favorite part of the entire day.
It is a paid Individual Lightning Lane experience, but since it was available with no wait we went ahead and paid the $21 a person to hop right on. This was definitely an excessive expense, but we were buying time.
This ride looks like lots of fun. I would pay to do it, too. :)
Allison was really excited to ride Incredicoaster so we headed that way.
There were several rides that were closed during our trip in April, including this one. It looked amazing, though.
They wanted to try the ferris wheel, but it is not just any ferris wheel, it has roller coaster style track loops that some of the cabins rotate around on to add a level of excitement.
Was it a fear of heights that made it scary, or the feeling that you were going to be thrown out of your seats?

They had a pool host who attempted to find people seats and made sure the chairs were being used, but compared to a WDW pool it was quite odd.
That pool reminds me of the Hidden Springs pool that used to be at WL. The shape of the pool and trees in the background seems similar.

Storm Along Bay needs a pool host to stop people from claiming seats when they won't be at the pool until later.
It felt very high end but it was so busy it was kind of unpleasant. It also wasn’t hot enough to really enjoy a swim. Marshall did have fun on the slide though. We didn’t stay long, maybe 45 minutes. We went back up to the room and got ready to go to dinner.
I'm impressed that you went to the pool. :)
We had reservations at Storytellers, which is a buffet restaurant where we had our rehersal dinner and many anniversaries. It is always great food, although on the expensive side.
We ate dinner at Storytellers and it was a great experience. We needed to rest after our busy day. And it was nice to have a variety of foods.
On Sunday morning, I took advantage of the opportunity to go out early and get some resort pictures. I just had to do it.
The resort is gorgeous. We weren't able to spend a lot of time exploring it. But your trip report makes me want to stay at the GC some day. :)
We haven’t been to Toon Town in a long time and they’ve made lots of changes and added Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
I'm glad that we decided to wait in the long standby line for MMRR. The line has lots of interesting detail. And the wait ended up to be about 30 minutes. The ride itself was identical, but the standby line is much better than at WDW.
After the snack stop we headed to another unique DL ride, the Finding Nemo Submarines.
I remember these from MK. I refused to go on them but the others in our group went on. It isn't a ride for the claustrophobics. :)
We walked through the third exit that connects over by the former Splash Mountain, since we were on another snack quest since Allie wanted beignets to match her ears.
We were totally lost when it came to directions. And the paper maps didn't help much. Things are in different places here.
Blue Bayou. We made it in though, and were fortunate enough to get a table right by the water.
I would love to eat here. It looks a little dark, though. You were lucky to get a reservation. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your DL trip! You also have excellent taste in art. I picked up a framed print of Forbidden in January at Epcot during Festival of the Arts. I was shocked that the lovely frame came with it a no extra cost.

I'd been waiting for this writeup, and of course it was fun to read!
Thanks, it was fun to do.

It looks like at the Carnation Cafe, Marshall had a side of mashed potatoes shaped like the Matterhorn?
They were just run of the mill mashed potatoes, but they might be missing a marketing opportunity there.

The earlier version of the Luigi's ride had vehicles that were steered by leaning in a direction; do the current vehicles also use that approach?
Now they use a trackless system like Runaway Railway and you don’t have any control over the cars.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't catch whether you guys went anywhere for lunch on Saturday?
Good question. We didn’t cover everything in super detail, but we did eat at the San Fransokyo food court area. That gave us a variety of choices, and we tried a burrito, a Mac and cheese bread bowl, and Allie had Chinese food. The Mac and cheese was the winner.

You'd said a while back that you planned to repeat the Tom Sawyer Island hide and seek game on this trip. Did that end up fitting in?
Unfortunately we did not make it to Tom Sawyer island. It was on our list but we ran out of time.

No Jeep on the next trip; I guess that's because you need a larger vehicle to fit in all the luggage more easily?
Exactly. And we happened to get a great rate on a full size premium SUV.

It must have been so special to stay again at the hotel you guys are named after!
Lol yeah. It is a neat hotel, and close to home, but still just a “little version of WL”.

Thanks for following along. It sounds like we share many similar opinions on DLR. We will not be on a cruise next time, we just got a great rate on a full size premium SUV.

I love your DL trip report. It makes a big difference to have some familiarity with Disneyland.
It is kind of fun and yet a little different.

I didn't realize that there was a DVC component at DL. Is it like WL and Copper Creek with the DVC section attached to the main resort? The three-day park ticket sounds like a good deal.
Just like at WDW they have a DVC wing at GC, and they just built a new DVC tower at the Disneyland Hotel.

We ended up doing several of the classic fantasyland rides. It was fun to do a few that they don't have at MK anymore. I really enjoyed them.
They are fun and classics.

This version was so much better than WDW's version. I am totally spoiled by the DL ride. We also enjoyed Indianna Jones. It is much better than the dinosaur ride at AK.
Well, with the retheme of Dinosaur maybe it will be more like DLR’s version.

Did the studio have the same layout as the WDW DVCs, with only one sink in the bathroom?
It was a slightly different layout, with dual sinks in an open bathroom area open to the entry hallway.

Cars Land was amazing at night. Pixar Place was great at night, too. We only had one day park hoppers, and this was my favorite part of the entire day.
It is beautiful. We had to share some nighttime Cars Land pics.

This ride looks like lots of fun. I would pay to do it, too. :)
It’s another one where DLR has the superior ride.
There were several rides that were closed during our trip in April, including this one. It looked amazing, though.
It’s a great roller coaster.

Was it a fear of heights that made it scary, or the feeling that you were going to be thrown out of your seats?
Marshall was worried more about the rocking and falling out of the seats, but Allie says it was both. For Melissa, it’s the heights. One advantage of the swinging ones is they don’t go quite as high.

That pool reminds me of the Hidden Springs pool that used to be at WL. The shape of the pool and trees in the background seems similar.
It is very similar. They have a three pool complex though and all were pretty busy.

Storm Along Bay needs a pool host to stop people from claiming seats when they won't be at the pool until later.

I'm impressed that you went to the pool. :)
We finally got to swim there, but it probably wasn’t worth the wait.

We ate dinner at Storytellers and it was a great experience. We needed to rest after our busy day. And it was nice to have a variety of foods.
It’s a nice meal destination, but sometimes the price is a little high for what you wind up with. We still probably have more meals there than most any other Disney restaurant.

The resort is gorgeous. We weren't able to spend a lot of time exploring it. But your trip report makes me want to stay at the GC some day. :)
It’s a little WL, but sadly without the lake. It is still super nice though.

I'm glad that we decided to wait in the long standby line for MMRR. The line has lots of interesting detail. And the wait ended up to be about 30 minutes. The ride itself was identical, but the standby line is much better than at WDW.
It is neat that you liked the queue better than WDW’s, which is pretty good. We will have to do it sometime.

I remember these from MK. I refused to go on them but the others in our group went on. It isn't a ride for the claustrophobics. :)
It’s really not that bad. I remember it from when I was really little.

We were totally lost when it came to directions. And the paper maps didn't help much. Things are in different places here.
Yes they are! For years we felt that things at MK were out of place just for that reason. Now we are really confused.

I would love to eat here. It looks a little dark, though. You were lucky to get a reservation. :)
It’s a nice place to get to eat, and wasn’t crazy expensive for lunch. It was hard to get though, but persistence paid off.

Thanks so much for sharing your DL trip! You also have excellent taste in art. I picked up a framed print of Forbidden in January at Epcot during Festival of the Arts. I was shocked that the lovely frame came with it a no extra cost.
Congratulations on your Forbidden! We miss going during Festival of the Arts but this helped make up for it. As far as Disney Art goes it seems to be a really good deal, and the cool frame is included!

Loved the bonus update! I got to go to DL last July and loved how easy everything was. And, everyone was so nice. Oh... and my friend back home tricked me and got me on the swinging ferris wheel. Me and my friend were pretty terrified. And I had no idea the goofy sky ride was Primevil Whirl. We got a good laugh out of that one too. It was hidden behind trees so we didn't realize what it was until we are just close enough to boarding it would have been silly to back out then. Haha.

Thanks for the bonus mini trip report. You did not try to do Haunted Mansion Holiday via the virtual queue? It is such a unique thing that Disneyland does each year.
We did not try for the HM Virtual Queue but we were shocked at how long the lines were in addition to the virtual queue. It just just wasn’t a high enough priority for us to go for it.

It is fun when you can surprise yourselves, usually… It is interesting to see how people perceive friendliness between the parks. To us, Florida people seem so nice. I wonder if it’s just being in a vacation mindset? Either way, being at Disney is fun.

Hey, guys! It's been a while. Happy New Year! How is the planning going for your June 2025 trip?

Hello! We had a great Christmas (with cinnamon rolls and Corn Chowder), and are now at 149 days till our 2025 trip. We have been discussing meal and park plans, and we do have our airfare locked down, but we will save the details for once we get around to starting a PTR in the next couple of months. We will post here once we kick it off.

After our chat for my Disney family study last year that was so exciting to see you guys back at Disneyland marking another family milestone! 🥰

I cannot believe you guys did the swinging ferris wheel, I don't know how much you would have to pay me to get in one of those! There would definitely be some colourful language from me as well haha.

Hello! We enjoyed doing the study, just like any excuse to talk about Disney.

I was surprised Melissa agreed to it, but watching the kids reactions made it totally worth it

Popping in to see if you're ok in CA? Sending positive thoughts to everyone in California.
Hi there. Thanks for thinking of us, but we are relatively far from the recent fire activity, although we did loose power for a few days and we have had wildfire within a mile of the house in the last year. It’s just part of life.

We are planning our 2025 trip and will be starting a PTR soon. We have some fun stuff to share, but are also super busy with work and finding time to post is difficult. We will get it going g soon though.

Hello (better late than never). No, we didn't get Moonlight Magic tickets this time. It was fun when we did it, but it was many years ago now.

On a related note, we have finally started our PTR for June 2025, when we will be headed back to WDW for a repeat version of this trip. Check it out as we make plans for what will be the same, and what will be new and different.
