Shape up before you sail!

I'd like to drop 20-40 pounds before our cruise in July. I've been walking, doing TaeKwonDo, and doing Pilates 2 times/week. I've got the added disadvantage that I had a total hysterectomy in Sept, so my hormones and muscle coordination are totally out of whack! I'm going to start a new diet plan a friend of mine is on that is designed for hormonal women (soy protein, etc) in Feb. just to see if that can jump start my weight loss.

It seems like anything I did prior to the surgery to loose weight doesn't work now. I had great success years ago (prior to birthing my youngest son) on weight watchers, but between working and parenting, I just can't fit the meetings in every week (and without the meetings, I just don't do as well on WW).

Anyone want to be my accountability person???

Ok, I am convinced -- I am pulling the Wii Fit out of the box (got it last Friday) and starting to use that! I am working with a trainer now once a week and started swim lessons last night (yes, I admit it, I am not a strong swimmer).

I want to lose weight for the cruise but also need to lose weight so I will have an easier time doing the triathalon this year (did it last year -- took me FOREVER).

I guess it is time to Hula Hoop on the wii fit!!! Ok, off to go walk with the neighbors (I am so motivated now!).

I am not a swimmer either have children who can swim like fish, but i dont even think they call what i do swimming.:rotfl2:
A swimming class is a great idea, are there alot of adult???
How "bad" of swimmers are they??

My Hormones are sooo bad right now toowhich i contribute my weight gain to and maybe even my bit of weight loss.
I think i am starting into menapause, i wont have a cycle for about 2-3 months. Which casues me to retain water or bloat or gain weight of soem kind.

Ughhh how long does this last????

I'm hoping to lose probably about 40+ lbs... shouldn't be hard since that is what I gain with pregnancy and having this little guy will help! ;)

I am just hoping that my body bounces back again fairly quick. I have 18 months to get back to "normal minus 10".

I learned to swim last year so I could do the Danskin triathalon. I basically can freestyle breathing every stroke on one side and doggy paddle. Everytime I would break the boats would come to "rescue me" and I would have to wave them off. Somehow I made it through. I am not a natural swimmer unlike my DD7 and DS4 who are FISH. I am uncomfortable in the water and it has prevented me from doing a ton of things so, decided to take the bull by the horns and enroll.

There were only a few adults in the class. I was embarressed at first but got over it once I was in the water. Some of the adults were learning to blow bubbles so I was feeling pretty good. Hopefully by the cruise I will feel comfortable in the water AND learn to snorkel. Less than 4 months but hopefully it is enough time and I intend to do several triathalons this year so hopefully they will be a lot easier!!!!:)

I am needing to lose about 30 lbs, never been that heavy - 180 lbs - (except when pregnant), I'd be OK with 150 at this point! We don't cruise until May 2010, but I had to do something to stop the weight gain. I discovered a running club for beginners through Continuing Ed at our local jr college, we've started out slowly, combining about 30 minutes of running/walking with classroom instruction on fitness topics, we also do a group run for about 30 min over the weekend, we are also supposed to workout on our own the rest of the week. The class runs through the end of April and then there is a 5K race that will be our "final exam". So far, after almost 3 weeks, I've lost about 6 lbs! I am also watching what I eat, DH is on a low cholesterol diet so that makes it easier (I say that, but after 3 weeks of being good we all pigged out on Dominoe's for supper tonight!). I have yet to be able to run more than 3 minutes straight, but my goal is to RUN that 5K!

Wii Fit!!!! Would walk outside everyday if I could--but this winter and constant snow made me buy the Wii Fit.

I'm enjoying this thread.... so many of us need support and this helps.:)

I had a health scare at Christmas, ended up in the hospital with viral mennnigitis, although the docs wrongly thought my blood pressure was my problem, it is too high and I am now on meds for it. Being so sick I lost 5 pounds in the hospital and I decided that was a good jump start for losing the 20 pounds I need to lose. I am mainly losing weight for my health, but looking good in a swimsuit is great too:thumbsup2

DH and I had a trip to WDW Jan 11 and a 3 day cruise after that. I was still tired and weak from the menningitis so we took it easy but I tried to walk in the resort gym and on the ship we did walking laps around deck 4 each day.
On the ship snacking is my problem so I made sure I snacked on fruit.
I managed to maintain my weight, but we are cruising at the end April
on the 7 day western, so my goal is to get in shape by then.

I am like the previous poster who gets hungry in the afternoon. I eat those mini carrots and a large glass of water. I've read that most people confuse hunger with thirst. Try drinking a glass of water and wait 10 minutes before grabbing a snack. You may find you don't need it.

If I have a chocolate craving, I allow myself some rasinets- they have dark chocolate covered raisins and it is a sweet that is as good for you as candy can be. Full of antioxidents!

Even if you don't like breakfast it is sooo important to your diet to eat some protein each morning. It starts your body burning calories and ups your metabolism plus helps you from wanting to snack before lunch.

I am getting alot of good tips from the Realage website. My best to all of you in reaching your goals :)

Have you checked out couch to 5K program? It a great way to get there. There is a training schedule. I think it's done in 5 weeks time frame. Many have great success with it. Good Luck. You can do it!:cheer2:

I am also trying lose some weight. I find that for me setting smaller targets works better. initally I wanted to lose a stone (14lb) before we cruise in August. I start on Jan 5th and have lost 10lb so far through making more sensible eating choices and using my Wii Fit. I also find that if I forbid myself to eat something I want it more so I am still allowing myself treats (have been out for dinner with friends several times since starting, I just make sure I am extra good before and after and do a bit of extra time on my Wii Fit to amke up for it.

I hope to lose closer to 28lb before our cruise in August but I will work on one stone at a time!

Good luck everyone :)

Well, I have lost 7 pounds this month. Pretty good considering that I didn't "buckle down" with the aerobics until last week. So theoretically, I could lose 8 pounds a month, no problem. That would put me at anorexic by cruise time (under 100 pounds)! Which means (in my strange world of logic) that I should have no problem losing approximately 5.5 pounds a month - which will put me where I haven't been since I was 18 (118 pounds)!! :cool1:

When I look at it that way, I don't see how I could fail. That said, I could definitely live with 130 or 135. I know the weight loss will slow down as time goes on, but I really feel focused; I think I can do this!! :cheer2:

Hi all! :wave2: Glad this thread was started. We are going on our first cruise in June and would like to get a little fit before going. DH is going for 40 lbs. I have lost most of the weight already but I'd like to lose another 5. Mostly what I'll be working on is toning it all up. We've started already but we plan on really kicking this thing into gear after our trip to WDW next week. :cool1: I'm hoping all the walking we will be doing will have us motivated enough to keep it up at home.

Well, I did great yesterday. I did 2 miles of power walking with resistance bands. I didn't overeat (although I did have to skip lunch which I know is a no-no). But I just couldn't get out of bed this morning to workout. I'm trying for one mile in the morning and one in the afternoon. So I am going to have to make myself do both tonight. Part of the problem is I tried one of the Biggest Loser workouts two days ago and my thighs are SO SORE :crazy2: the thought of working out this morning killed me.

When asked about shaping up, I say the 'round is a shape'. We do tend to try to walk at least 3 miles a day, plus climb stairs. Try climbing up from deck one, to the top...it's a workout, but it makes room for a Palo's chocolate souffle.;)

Sure wished it worked that way. I know a lot of people that I talk to wonder why they lose so much weight at first and then have a tough time loosing as time goes by. The reason is that a 170 pound person is going to lose weight pretty quickly on 1500 calories and 30 minutes of excercise a day. But once that person hits 150 pounds, weight loss is going to be pretty close to nothing. The reason is because a 150 pound person only burns about 1500 calories a day on average to maintain that weight. Sorry, I saw that in Prevention magazine recently.

Yes, that is why I said that I know the weight loss will slow down. The good thing is that I started slow, and I can "up" my exercise as time goes by, and "down" my eating (right now I am eating what the family is for dinner, I can change to something healthier). Like I said, I would be happy at 130 or 135, which is only losing 4 pounds a month. But I have to have a goal - and I am shooting for 125. More is okay, less would be great!!

Funny, your weight goal is about where I want to be. Right now I am just going for 135. That is about 20 more pounds to go. I can't believe that I had myself up to 168 right after the holidays. That is the heaviest I have ever been. Up till about 4 years ago I was always around 128. Then I started having thyroid problems when I hit my early 40's. Now every pound is a struggle. Good Luck!

I am embarassed to admit that I was up to 180. In my defense, though, I was at 155 and had to take medication which caused my weight to skyrocket. I am back down to 173, so slow but sure!

Someone told me that losing weight is 20% exercising and 80% what you put in your mouth and sadly, it's true.

Actually, that is not true. Studies have been done, and statistically, when comparing two study groups, one that watches faithfully what they eat and never exercises and the other that exercises faithfully, and does not watch their diet, the second group almost always has the greater success. Tehcnically speaking, exercise, is the most important component to weight loss.

Now, I understand what you mean, as my sister and I are foodies, and we just love food and trying new foods, and baking, etc. But, in my own personal experience, the exercise is definitely A#1.

I have to agree because I started dieting at the beginning of January (with some exercise) and my weight was seesawing. Once I started doing aerobic exercise every day (without changing my diet any more) my weight has been down every single day that I have stepped on the Wii balance board to measure it. I have lost more in the past week and a half that I did for the 3 weeks before that.
