Shakespeare anyone?

Got my reading list for uni next year which includes 5 Shakespeare plays . . I have not read Shakespeare in 9 years!

I'm the same, haven't read any in ages. What plays do you need to read?

King Lear,
The Merchant of Venice (which I did for GCSE),
A Midsummer Night Dream,
As you Like it (I do know one line out of this play as it was quoted in all my social psychology books last year, not sure it will be much use though )
Hamlet.

A midsummer nights dream is my fave - 'My Oberon, what visions have I seen, I thought I was enamoured of an ***!' gets me every time!
I remember Lear and Hamlet being very heavy going - I opted for Wilde in my English Lit thesis, so much easier to understand!
Shakespeare was never meant for reading, just acting so if you have trouble digesting parts you may find it beneficial to study alongside an audio tape of the book

great advice, thank you. I much prefer Chaucer, its shocking how risque they were back in the middle ages.

Miidsummer Nights Dream was my favourite, quite liked The Merchant of Venice as well.

Glen (my eldest) is having a theme day at school on Friday based on Shakespeare Experience - performance of the Tempest which apparently they will be studying for SATs next year.Have no idea what its about, never studied Shakespeare, better do some swotting!

Oh how exciting! I did my degree in English and love Shakespeare. Hamlet and The Tempest are my favourites. I found one of the most effective ways of getting a "feel" for the script and underlying themes/tones was to see performances of the plays in person or on TV.

I love shakespeare as theatre but definatley not a good read! Think my favourite is The Taming of the Shrew

Feel like a dunce. You all seem to love Shakespeare, have various degrees and careers to match and have been to WDW a lot. I'm a comprehensive schooled average, stay at home mum who is now a hospital cleaner who has never been to WDW (yet).

NEVER EVER presume you are a 'dunce' that's really terrible! I love reading and have always been a complete bookworm - I was fascinated by books from a pre school age and was reading Oscar Wilde over the breakfast table to my parents when I was knee high! My son unfortunately although he can read brilliantly is totally not interested and wouldn't pick up a book to read if he didn't have to do it in school. English Lit was about the ONLY thing I could do well - I wish I was as conscientious about cleaning! If I've got a new book my son knows he'll fend for himself until I've finished it - I don't think that's a sign or being too clever do you? and I'm just a lowly travel agent so no big career there!

I didn't mean to sound like I was being mean to people who love books, I love books myself, I can lose myself in a good old fashioned historical/romance book anytime, a bit of fantasy, but I admire people who can read and understand what I see as 'high brow' books. Never have had or never will have much self confidence. Sorry if I offended you.

Frequently do put myself down Carol - must be having a bad day today! Got to go and see the Mental Health team next week for depression, but thats another matter and I'm taking this thread off topic.

The RST is doing the Complete works this year, so it might be worth a trip to Stratford (quick advert for our town)

I think the university will be arranging a trip though don't think I will be able to go as I have a 4 y/o, so will have to get dbf to take me for the weekend.

I think they have a holiday Inn there.(must do as my parents went and they only stay at HI as my dad gets an employers discount)
