SHADES OF GREEN at Walt Disney World Resort Thread

Hi. I've booked a SOG stay for October. Cannot wait!!! :banana: I hope it's OK to ask one of you pros a couple of questions.

1. Are coffeemakers the Mr Coffee kind and is the coffee provided?

2. Are the fridges big enough to hold a half-gallon milk jug? We like to do cereal for breakfast in the room and just want to figure out if that's feasible. I assume we'd need to bring disposable bowls/utensils with us, right? We'll be doing a Publix run before we check in for fruit and such. Just want to make sure we're covered.

TIA

Kat

Just back from an amazing 9 day vacation at SoG. In response to the above questions:

1. The coffee makers are the Mr. Coffee kind and the coffee is provided, but isn't great quality, IMHO. Next time we'll bring our own. We used the Java Cafe a lot, which gets pricey.

2. The fridges are dorm-type fridges, but they seem to hold a lot. We were able to put in our fridge:
--a half-gallon of milk;
--a half-gallon of grapefruit juice;
--a half-gallon of orange-pineapple juice (my kids' favorite, which we always get on vacation);
--a large container of yogurt;
--a large container of cottage cheese;
--a bag of cherries;
--a small container of blueberries;
--a box of fudge (don't judge me--I'm on vacation!).
So as you can see, with some creative stacking it can hold quite a bit.

Some other thoughts on our trip:

--Service was exceptional, as always. Front desk and bell services were awesome, and the restaurant staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Ordered room-service pizza once and they delivered ahead of schedule and made sure we had paper plates/napkins/etc. Great job.
--Having said that, I'd say food quality was adequate at best. We ate at the Garden Gallery twice, and I'd say it tasted like "MWR food," if you know what I mean--the type of food they serve at our local Leaders Club. Not bad, just not really special in any way. The convenience, price and service quality helped.
--Pool refurb: There was no sign of any imminent refurb. No prep work outside, no signage, staff didn't know anything. During our stay I got an email response to a question I'd sent off before we left, and they basically said it would happen sometime in the future but no dates had been set and they still had to hire a contractor. If they haven't even hired a contractor yet, my guess is they're a few months off from beginning work.
--We had Room 149, which was nicely located between the 2 pools. Our patio opened out to the Mill Pond pool, but we only went there once because the water was HOT! It felt like the water temp was in the 90s, and that wasn't especially refreshing after a day in the parks. We spent most of our time in the Magnolia Pool, where we like to enjoy the hot tub to ease the soreness from walking the parks, and the pool temp was more reasonable. It was busier than we had seen in the past, but not crowded.

Hi all!! Here At SOG now. Yesterday was an exhausting whirlwind. Went to dtd last night And had amazing sandwich from EoS!!! Then did part of mk today!! I will do a tr when i get home after weekend.
Just wanted to let you all know the AAFES says construction fall 2012. Opening spring 2013. As of yet I didnt see signs of pool construction. But i havent gotten a good look at the magnolia pool yet as it started pouring when i went over. :confused3
i will try to update y'all more at a later time. :)

Here now too. I haven't explored much other than to check in but it was so easy to get our tickets in advance.

I will take a picture of the aafes sign later today which shows a big map of the new location. My peeps are just waking up so we're off for our first day of fun.

Oh and free in room WiFi is nice.

Free was nice--the level of connectivity, for us, was not. It was difficult to log in a lot of times, and once in we got kicked out a good bit, too. They need to make their system more robust, IMHO. But it's nice to see the effort at free wifi.

We have a ticket problem. We need tickets for Sept 28 thru Oct 1 - our trip spans the two military offers... one expires Sept 30 the other doesn't start until Oct 1 - any suggestions?

4 adults - 4 day hoppers...

Well, what if you do 1 of the 4 day hoppers for each, that gives you 3 days covered, then purchase a regular 1 day base or hopper, that would be cheaper, probably. We did that once when we only needed 1 extra day. Buy it as Shades so you don't pay tax. Unless, you will be going back before the new promotion ticket expires on 9/30/2013.

Its funny. On my phone in getting booted constantly and connecting is off but on my tablet I'm fine. But, in he mk today I had the same issue connecting.

My phone has terrible connection, but I didn't have too many probs with my computer. I actually have to sit out on the balcony in order to talk on my phone. If I walk inside, it cuts out. :confused3

This last Easter I had absolutely no problems with the Wifi or my phone at Shades.. I wonder if it has anything to do with how close you are to the lobby? :confused3 Our room was very close and on the same floor as the lobby. We did have problems our first year there when we were in the back of the resort (4 years ago) Not sure if this is the case but we have never had problems since we requested a room close to the lobby.. Just me thinking aloud..

Let me take that back.. We DID have problems on our last day with my cell now that I remember.. I figured it had something to do with the fact that we just switched to the IPhone.. (And Sprints sometimes sucky service.) :lmao: I guess it must have been a Shades issue..

In about 6 hours we will be heading out, very excited! I'll be tweeting about SOG and Disney if your interested follow me!

Friends of ours will be staying at SOG 12/6-12/15/12. My family will also be down in Disney from 11/29-12/8/12 and staying at CBR. We would like to get together on 12/8 for breakfast if it's do-able, but I don't know the general area where it is located. What's nearby in terms of other resorts?

Our friends have plans to visit AK that day while we will be checking out. Originally, I was thinking of doing Whispering Canyon for breakfast b/c they were initially going to be staying at the FW cabins. But they changed that to SOG.

SoG is across from the Poly. CBR is in the DHS area, near Pop Century and Art of Animation area. CBR actually backs Pop Century

Walk across the street and have a nice breakfast at the Kona Cafe in the Poly.

Hear now and totally unpacked and settled in, we have a third floor room at the end of the hall facing the quite pool (but pretty much all we see is a tree and a little blue water), the locations not bad though just not my favorite. For some reason it's a lot louder at the quite pool than at the Mickey pool also seems busier at the quite pool (so, not necessarily quite). Anyway, we keep getting the same woman checking us in every year and she's not really helpful with room request or trying to help you change rooms so we decided we wouldn't mess with it. Though none of our requests were met when we checked in we did push for connecting rooms and got it so the rest will be perfectly fine.

The weather is nice right now not to warm, but the man who helped us with our bags said the rain is supposed to set in but the weekend so we will see. Even if it rains we will still do the parks and enjoy it.

Saw a sign for the aafes expansions "this fall" but absolutely no mention of the pool refurb.

So overall, so far so good! If you have any questions I can answer while I'm here I'll do my best.
