Service isn't so "Magical" right now...

i was on this cruise too with my husband, parents, and two daughters, 7 and 11. we had no problems at all. i never DIDN'T have a hot (or at least very warm) shower. we were in the late dining rotation (PLAPLAP) and our servers and head server were all very good. yes, it was a little drawn out, but my kids got their food early enough that each night at 9:00 my 7 year old was able to go to the front of the restaurants and meet the CMs who took the kids to the Lab and my 11 year old would happily go off to the Edge.
i guess we were lucky with our service (including Marvin, our room steward) b/c knowing the way i am (and the rest of the adults on my trip are), it coulda gotten ugly!! i say what i mean, mean what i say...and i TRY to not say it meanly. :lmao:

Dena - I am so sorry your cruise didn't go as you expected! We too were on your cruise and had a wonderful time! We had PLAPLAP main seating and our server and head server were awesome. I too would not be happy with the dinner options if I had the experience you had.

When we went to Topsiders every day for breakfast, everything went really smoothly for us. We had the baby in stroller, and 3 trays. Every time we got to the end of the line, there was always someone there to carry 2 of our trays to the tables for us. We just found someone to ask for a highchair and had one w/in minutes.

I remember about the water being out....I went to take a shower at 5 and no hot water! I called down to guest relations and they told me that it was just fixed and that they were heating the water.

I wish that you had a better experience...after spending all that money it is a disappointment to not have it be up to your expectations.

It must just be our family, but we've always had 2 hour dinners onboard and would never expect dinner to last just an hour. What is the case for others?

Sorry to hear about your assistant server. We had a similar issue once. In our case, it was the Assistant server's last cruise before his contract was fulfilled and he could go home. He told us how he never expected how hard it would be working on the ship and that he was glad to be done with his contract. He was replaced on the final 3 or 4 nights of the cruise and the new person was much better.

When did Disney stop selling bottled water for excursions? It was always available at Topsiders on port days on our 5 cruises. They sold water and as well as the bottle straps and little coolers. These were also sold near the registration desk if you had a DCL excursion. Water was available for purchase on our cruise last fall. I don't think they sold water on Deck 1 as you were leaving the boat (probably to avoid a bottleneck).

Also, they did give out towels to use for excursions as well on all five of our cruises including last fall. They gave them to us when we signed-in for the excursion. They were also there outside the boat at CC. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have done this for your cruise as well.

Sorry to hear about the hot water issue. Sounds like it affected a lot of people. I'd not heard of that being an issue before. Has anyone else ever heard of this being an issue or was it just an isolated event on that cruise?

On our last cruise, topsiders worked just like you said. It didn't work this time because we needed a table for at least 5 for my immediate family or 8 if we all wanted to sit together. And even with the one person there to help with trays, we had 4 trays and only two adults with one pushing a stroller or carrying a baby for my immediate family - so we were always one person short for help. There are very few tables that can accomodate more than 4 at topsiders. After the first day, we realized we had to find a table first or else we were stuck trying to hold a bunch of trays and either carry the baby or push a stroller and assist my mother in law while we wandered around trying to find a table. Or we had to east separately. AFter that, we learned to get a table first - which of course meant eating in shifts but at least we weren't moving through crowds with 2 kids, baby, and mother in law who has difficulty walking. We usually ended up getting two tables near each other by the pool and then did the buffet shuffle. It was better when Parrot Cay was opened for breakfast and I usually didn't even attempt to do lunch - just grabbed a sandwich (in shifts) from Goofys. I met two other families in lines for characters with 3 and 4 kids and they noticed the same thing I did - most of the ship is set up to accomodate families of 4!!! Although Disney isn't unusual because with three kids I am finding the same issue at many, many restaurants.

Like I have said repeatedly, I didn't think every CM was awful - some were exceptional, it was just the inconsistency that was so dissappointing - three excellents and 3 poors still only average to a "good" - and our excellent room steward, awful assistant server for the first three nights, just OK head waiter, good waiter and excellent assistant server the last three nights just seemed really hit or miss - which is why there seems to be such a variety of reports on the boards about cruise experiences on the Magic!!!

To be fair - they may have had towels and bottle of water for sale by the excursion desk, but we weren't on a Disney excursion so didn't check there. On every other line I have been on (RCL, Princess, NCL, Carnival) they have towels and bottled water for sale right where you disembark. After getting all 8 of us down to Deck 1 to disembark and realizing they weren't available, I just gave up and we did without (we purchased water at the beach we went to and I had a blanket for the baby). Since we had to use an elevator for my MIL and the stroller which is a pain since if we were too slow, people would cut in front of us and we often had to wait for a couple of elevator cycles and I usually walked, I wasn't about to hike back up to deck 9 to find towels!!!

My inlaws sailed on Oasis of the Seas last month and I think were doing lots of comparisons - Disney definately lost in their minds for service with the speed of dinner service, lack of towels and water at the disembarkation, etc. And perhaps my MILs comments made me a little more sensitive to these things; afterall we had saved for awhile and paid for their cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary so her little comments increased my irritation and dissappointment!!! Between that and a very sick little baby, things I probably wouldn't have noticed so much became much more obvious to me - when you are really counting on the extra service, when it is missing it is obvious!!

But on the plus side, I missed so many desserts and hiked up so many steps carrying at least on kid most of the time I don't need a post-cruise diet:rotfl:

We are a family of 5 and have never experienced a lack of tables (or help) at Topsiders. For 3 of our cruises, we even had extended family with us and always found a place to eat whether it was indoors or outdoors. We've been on 4, 7 and 15 night cruises and it didn't seem to matter whether it was a Sea Day or not. Granted, we never had an infant with us as we decided to wait until our youngest was 3 to begin cruising. That said, we have always found the ship quite accomodating for our family of 5 (or bigger with extended family).

Yes, that would have ticked me off too. A free cruise and all you do is nitpick or complain? I could put up with a lot more than a longer dinner (which is normal for us anyway) or opportunity to purchase a bottle of water on Deck 1 vs at Topsiders. Just take us next time and we promise not to complain!

BTW - I am surprised about towels not being available by Deck 1. I don't think we ever needed them as we took them from the room in the morning as my DW lives by the boy scout motto - be prepared! But I do seem to recall a big bin of towels right outside the ship - both when leaving and a drop box when returning. It's a shame if they have stopped this practice.

I was kind of surprised at the lack of help and tables at Topsiders. This was one of my fondest memories from our last cruise - how helpful they were in getting drinks and finding a table. It really just wasn't there for us. There would sometimes be one person there to help (never the 2 we would have needed) and sometimes no one. Sometimes some one was there to fill drink glasses and sometimes not. Very inconsistent. And there were tables that would have accomodated our party, but often 2 or 3 people were sitting at a table for 8 so they just weren't there to accomodate the larger parties. I was so glad when Parrot Cay was open for breakfast because it made it much easier. By the end of the cruise, I just took the kids to Goofy's for cereal and smoothies, grabbed a croissant for myself and let them swim. We had a great waiter one time at topsiders really help us get everything we needed and a couple of times we were kind of stuck flagging people down. ANd I freely admit snide mother in law comments and a baby who wouldn't stop crying because he was so sick added to the turmoil - it is hard to be patient with long dinners or no one to help the 4 and 8 year olds with their trays when the baby is crying!!! Again, it was just the lack of consistency about everything - with all of the new CMs it just seemed really off.

We sailed on the Eastern cruise just before yours - January 15-22. This was our 6th cruise with DCL and our service was not as good as it had been in the past as well. The first dinner was not good - the service was quite bad, both from our server and asst. server; we had late seating and we had to wait quite a long time to get into Animator's Palate; we kept being served dishes we didn't order and the much of the food was cold. It was really disappointing. I felt bad, too, because we were seated with a family who had never cruised before and, even though I didn't know them, I wanted the cruise to be wonderful for them. My DD10 just loves the nice dinners - that's one of her favorite memories from other cruises. Even she noticed things weren't right. I felt horrible. After I got back to the room, I called guest services to see if I could leave a message for our head waiter just to let him know things weren't good. I'm not a complainer, really I'm not, and I hated to say anything but I didn't want the whole week to be like that. They took a detailed message and the next evening, he thanked us for the feedback. The asst. server kept apologizing and told us this was his first week. He worked very hard to remember our names which he said the head server told him he must do but never did really get our drink orders right. But he tried! (I tried to help him make Mickey Mouse-shaped catsup but he needed more practice because he couldn't do that by the end of our week.) We found out our server had just moved up to server from asst. server. So, she ended up doing most of the serving plus things the asst. server usually does. I know they must train new people somehow but it was disappointing. We still had a nice cruise - it just lacked those personal touches that we looked forward to. Maybe if it had been our first cruise, things would have seemed magical. Maybe we had great expectations - and that's not our server's fault.

Our stateroom steward was okay - he kept telling us we weren't doing things right as far as leaving the sign on the door or we were in the room too long in the morning. Again, we've had such wonderful room stewards in the past - some were friendly and some were not as personable but very efficient. He did, however, become very warm and accommodating when it was time for evaluations at the end of the week - I don't blame him for that because I know they depend on tips.

I didn't book another cruise, though, which I usually do. I might regret that later when we decide to give it another chance but maybe it's time to try another cruise line.

Like I said, some of it might be our high expectations. Our last cruise was a Panama Canal cruise in August 2008 and, since we hadn't been on the Magic in a while, we had high hopes. And this was just our experience - others had great service! I'm sure Disney will work things out soon if people are giving them honest and constructive feedback.

I'm so sorry that so many of you have had bad experiences. We were on the 1/22 Western and never really had any issues. The head waiter always seemed to be around to help our waitstaff clear dishes etc when necessary. Our assistant waiter had only been there 6 weeks, but she remembered our drink orders and we had refills without ever asking for one. We had late dining and found that we usually had to rush to get anywhere by 10:30 p.m. but it sounds like a 2-hour dinner is the norm. We found Topsiders fully staffed the few times we ate there - orange juice already poured and lots of castmembers around. We also had towels available on the dock. I only remember seeing water for sale on the first port day.
I hope for everyone's sake, that Disney's service becomes more consistent. We had no problems and I'm sad that others didn't get the same Disney experience that we had.

:scared1:
Seriously? If you actually tipped the man, I'd be disappointed. I realize they have to do their jobs, but really - shame on you for inconveniencing HIM on YOUR holiday.

:furious:

Sorry. My last job title was Director of Client Services in my previous (single) life and reading stuff like this just lights my hair on fire!!!

That's what I was thinking -who is on VACATION here:confused3

I sent DCL an email with a link to this thread. I just think every chance we have to make them aware of the problems will help them to improve for the future! Think of the few here who have said they won't cruise Disney for awhile - multiply that by a percentage of the 2500 on the ship, and you have alot of loss of business. I hate to see things get even worse, because it shows up in less CM's and less quality of food and services.

We were on the same cruise and I just came to the boards to post what a wonderful/magical time we had. So sorry Denas, that your experience was different and not all you had hoped.

The condition of the ship: not as pristine as the Wonder but she's still a beauty.

Dining: It was a highlight. Our wait staff was great from Asst in training, to Asst, Waiter, on up to the head waiter who was always there to make sure everything was just right. The waiter did magic tricks for the kids, brought our painfully shy DS out of his shell. He even had a nice sense of humor... one night when I said I wanted nothing for dessert, I literally got Nothing for dessert:

Nothing4Dessert.jpg

He then brought me a slice of Creme Brulee Cheesecake that was to die for (I ate one small bite and passed it around the table... holding to my resolve... although I can't wait for my next cruise to try that one again when I am not so stuffed).

Palo was also great as always, we even got to talk with the chef!

The weather: other than the first day, we had some of the best weather in the last nine weeks on the Magic (sunny, mid 70s-80s).

Excursions: We had a mixed bag here.
The downhill rainforest trek at St Maarten had its moments, but being constantly told how to hike downhill and where to place your feet got old fast. Luckily we had some friends from our hometown that had a place for us to relax during the afternoon (the margaritas and view were awesome):

StMaartenView.jpg

In St Thomas we went on Capt Nautica's RIB boat/snorkeling and it was AWESOME. We went snorkeling in two locations (with Sea Turtles and at a shipwreck). Th RIB boat ride prompted DS 8 to say, "this is way better than the Yeti ride!"

In terms of character photo ops Let me start by saying that we don't get pictures with the princesses unless we catch them impromptu (lines for the princesses have been long on every Disney cruise we have been on), but our girls (DD 11 and DD BFF 11) went for pictures with characters on several occasions with no problems - in fact they commented on how short the lines were. One magical moment was when Donald started doing a Tango with our DD across the floor... being a dancer, she was THRILLED and proceeded to beam for the next hour :goodvibes).

DancewithDonald.jpg

We did not notice a lack of hot water - may have been the time of day we showered... almost makes me wonder if we were on the same cruise. :confused3

If we had a complaint, it would be our day after the cruise back in the Parks ... but that is a story for a different forum.

So we just returned from our 7-night Eastern sailing on the Magic. We last sailed on Disney 4 years ago with my two kids who were then 4 and 6 months. This time we brought the older two (now 8 and 4) my youngest (10 months) and my in-laws. My in-laws are veteran cruisers with2-3 cruises a year on many lines (mostly Royal Carribean recently) and avid Disney fans. The kind of Disney fans that have Disney-themed Christmas trees, dining rooms, artwork, and are annual pass holders. They have never done a Disney cruise because the price was so much more for them than they typically spend on other cruise lines. We paid for their cruise and have been saving and planning for several years.

DH and I had been raving about the fabulous Disney service and were really excited to cruise. I read the few negative comments on this board and figured it was mostly from people who cruise Disney so much they were nit-picking. Now I think they may have some legitimate concerns....

Service ranged from absolutely awful to just OK with a few exceptional spots. Our Assistant waiter was awful. Really, really awful. The first night, my SIL had mistakenly booked a spa treatment at 7:15 thinking we would be done with our 5:45 dinner and ended up only getting an appetizer and one glass of water. The rest of us finally left the dining room at 8 and gave up on getting dessert. Our waiter did everything - having to bring silverware, drinks etc.

While our waiter seemed to cover better by night 2, the assistant server was worse - but at least we all ate and managed to leave by 7:30 (which is still a long time for three kids to behave). By night three, I ended up leaving at 7:15 with a crying baby, no entre for me, no dessert for any of the adults, and barely made our show. The assistant waiter served a flat coke that didn't arrive until the main course. When my SIL asked if he could possibly serve her that wasn't flat, he looked at her incredulously and asked if she expected him to go to another machine:scared1: However, the final straw that night was when he started clearing and replacing silverware from our table and the other table he was responsible for. He was taking the dirty silverware and putting it into a bin and then pulling the clean silver ware FROM UNDERNEATH and putting it out for use (for both us and for the following seating because we watched him do it at the table next to us when he was re-setting for the next meal.) At that point, we sat our waiter down and told him this was not working out. He told us the assistant server was new and he would try and train him more.

On night 4, no assistant server showed up. It was kind of amazing that our waiter provided much better service without an assistant (drinks on time and what we ordered, silverware out when it was time to eat something, etc). We inherited a replacement assistant.

The next day, I was up with a cranky baby very early at topsiders and saw a couple of officers who were clearly in charge of food service checking on something at the drink station. Remembering someone's comment here on DIS about not letting your cruise go by before complaining, I flagged him down and expressed our problems - and mostly requested that the replacement assistant server stay with us for the remainder of the cruise. At least at this point, Disney customer service began to kick in. He took everything down on paper. That evening, a restaurant manager came over to talk to us and said that the previous assistant server would be doing something else for the remainder of the cruise. While dinner service definately improved, it was still INCREDIBLY slow. We wanted to enjoy the evening family caberet at 7:30 and it was hard to make it, even when we were the very first people in the dining room at 5:45 when it opened.

Our waiter told us that probably close to 85% of the crew were on first contracts with Disney. He was also a first Disney contract, but had been at sea for 9 years sailing with Royal Carribean. He said the biggest problem was close to 40% were probably first time at sea!!! It definately showed. We had really hoped to wow my in-laws and they were clearly dissappointed. My mothe-in-law kept pointing out that on Royal Carribean they managed to get served dinner in an hour and on Royal Carribean they were given towels and there were bottles of water for purchase right where they disembarked the ship to take with them on excursions, etc. We did have some great service in pockets....I needed some kind of broth soup to feed my baby and asked a waiter at the lunch buffet one day if he could find me something. He ordered it for me from room service and delivered it to my table (I didn't know they had chicken soup at room service and had had spent two days searching for broth soups!) Our room steward was great. I was glad Disney resolved my complaint. My biggest problem, however, was that Disney is training A LOT of people on the job. As I pointed out to the manager, I realized that people needed to be trained, but I had paid a lot of money and didn't want to train them on my cruise - I wanted them to arrive at my table trained!!

We also had problems with the condition of the Magic. I didn't notice the little things that people have complained about - rust spots, chipped tiles, dirty chandelier, etc. I did notice that the entire ship was out of hot water for a day. It was especially irritating, because I went to take a shower and found no hot water and called maintenance. The lady took my room number and said "you don't have any hot water??" like it was a big surprise and room specific. My in-laws also didn't have hot water next door. I decided to go to the changing rooms on deck nine in the spa for a shower and found it was also cold. There was another lady doing the same thing because her shower was cold. When I left the spa, I mentioned it to the ladies at the front desk thinking that no one knew there was a water problem. That is when she said "oh, the entire ship is without water and has been since noon. THey didn't expect so many people to be coming back to take showers right now" THis was at 5 pm when the ship was in St. Maarten and everyone was getting ready for pirate night!!! I thought the maintenance people should have told me they knew about the problem. I also spent most of that dinner wondering how they had washed their hands and cleaned the dishes without hot water. At least I was only without hot water for a day. I talked to a couple of people that told me they hadn't had hot water the first 3 days of the cruise.

The kids had a great time, but the crew really seemed surprised by the number of kids and unfamiliar with how to manage a crowd - very un DIsney. The first Princess gathering occured on Monday. It clearly stated in the Navigator it would be repeated on Thursday. The line was so long that 30 minutes prior to it starting they were telling people at the end of the line that it would be repeated and to come back on Thursday.

We opted for the Thursday princess gathering. As we watched the princesses file in, Aurora wasn't there. On the Monday princess gathering, Aurora, Tiana, Cinderalla, Belle, Snow White, Alice and Peter Pan had all been present. I asked a CM where we could find Aurora. She told me they had decided not to include her, Alice or Peter Pan in this gathering because it had been too crowded on Monday. I was kind of suprised that the CMs had not been prepared for the amount of little girls who would come to a princess gathering and didn't know how to manage the crowds. Hasn't DCL been doing princess gatherings on the Magic for years??? But, the worst part was that Aurora was not only NOT coming to the princess gathering, she wasn't out again at all until the party the final night. My daughter was in tears about missing her favorite princess which made me really irritated that I had followed the navigators and assumed it really would be repeated on the second day. My 4 year old couldn't stay awake until 10:30pm to see her the final night. They also closed the Oceaners Club down for the day we were in St. Thomas. They ended up cancelling half the activities in the lab and half in the club and combining the groups together there. My kids still had fun, but they had highlighted activities they wanted to do that day from the navigators and were dissapointed that they weren't offered because the Club was closed. Not at all sure why they did that.

We re-booked on board so I could have the discount if I decide to cruise again. However, right now I think there is probably a greater chance that we won't - at least until Disney has finished putting out new ships and can catch up with training the crews.

Oh Dena I am so sorry you had so many problems. This was my first Disney Cruise and I didnt feel the Disney either. I loved the cruise dont get me wrong but it was no more magical than the Royal and Carnival I was on last year. Our head server was our problem. I too re booked too to get the discount. We didnt have the water problem, I met a lady on the plane and she too asked me that , she was on 6 or 7. We were on 5. What week did you re book for? We did for the same week next year. I was disappointed not to be get to meet you.

I was also on this cruise and have a lot of negative things to say about it as well. Dinner was horribly slow, our head waiter treated us like we were an annoyance. There was nothing special about the service at all. We were also in line to see the Princess's and had to go back on Thursday. You would think they would have more chances to see them. I would rate this cruise a 6 out of 10. I was so disappointed, especially after reading so many positives things about Disney cruises and especially the Magic. We had no hot water for 2 days - totally unacceptable. I think they should have made an announcement to inform everyone. For the money we paid for this trip, I expected better. I, for one, will never cruise with Disney again. Such a shame.

I just got off of this cruise as well and I saw water bottle/strap stands every time I got off the boat. Maybe people missed them because they were getting off on a different gangway? Also, the Promenade Lounge had water bottle/straps for sale as well, and that's where several of the excursions met before leaving.

Maybe it's because I haven't been on a cruise in over 14 years, but I was very pleased with our experience. I will admit that there were some mishaps with dinners, but our servers (Dean and Jose) were great to the kids and worked very hard to fix anything that went wrong. I do wish that dinner didn't take quite so long. There were times when it seemed like the time from appetizer to entree was ridiculously long, but because we were an enormous family group of a dozen and are kind of obnoxious and chatty, we didn't notice the delays as much as we might have if we were a smaller, quieter group.

I got the cold shower treatment on St. Maarten day as well. It was actually pretty pleasant because I was so dehydrated and over heated that I didn't even mind, but yeah, I can see why that would be an issue for most people. That was the one and only time we didn't have hot water.

We were also right next to the Walt Disney Suite and shared a cabin host with the people there, so I suspect that we probably got the "lead" cabin host. He (Shaka) told us he was taking care of two huge suites and several rooms like ours (Verandah). I was amused by how frustrated he got with us for leaving our verandah sliding door open all the time. Sorry, Disney, but the whole reason for getting a verandah room was so that we could enjoy the fresh air! Anyway, he was nice about "reminding" us, so I couldn't even be mad at him.

Also, who was it that said the age groups were off kilter for the clubs? I totally agree. My 9 year old son went to the Lab once and then refused to go again because, "it's nothing but little kids!" He would have loved to go to the Edge.

Overall, I'd give the experience an 8 out of 10. We're definitely going again, once we recover from the hemorrhage of money we just experienced.

I am glad it was not only me that thought the dinner service was slow. I know they say 2 hours but you don't get it. When you sit down at 5:45 you do not expect to get your entree at 7:00, one night was 7:30 now that is crazy. Some night we did not get out of the dinning room until 8:00 and that wasn't because we were socializing with the waiter or other people since we were at a table by ourselves.

I think dinner was way too long, I am good with every 15 minutes the getting my next course....:rotfl: We had a great group of people at our table and the servers were nice but our head one forgot things, gave the meals to the wrong people. The morning of character breakfast I ordered oatmeal and the glazed donut with the cream that is it......I get my oatmeal and way later he comes with the glazed donut with the whole and says thats all he can find thats ok right...so I said it was ok, my dh ate it. So our Asst server came over to give me more water and I asked her to see if she could get me one, she came back with a plate full......YUMMY!!!! She also made me her own version of pink lemonade......cranberry and lemonade....it was also yummy!!!

So what time was the show for the early dinner? We had late dinner and we had to make a mad dash to change to go to the 10:15 show.

We were on this cruise, as well. Our dining experience was not as bad as denas' but was not as good as loriekins. :)

Our dining typically took us 1.75-2 hours to complete, despite being one of the first tables in the dining room. Our assistant server was friendly but couldn't do mickey ketchup to save his life. ;)

I noticed lots of little things like wear and tear on the boat--the rust spots, etc. But, the Magic _is_ an older boat. So.

The Medical Center service--Dr. Nick was a delight to work with. He waived the follow up fee to visit; The other doctors did not. When we called to speak with the on-call nurse, guest services would often reply that they would reopen at 9:30 AM, surely I could wait until then. With a child with a temp of 104 for days on end, when new symptoms appeared, I surely could not wait to speak with someone. *shrug* My daughter was put in isolation for much of the cruise. She got sick while on the boat--Dr. Inge said that the sickness had to have been caught from the baot due to the incubation period.

We personally witnessed a problem with the health screening--the group that checked in prior to us marked that they had fever, vomitting, etc before arriving, but were sent through. When we checked in to line, the clerk that that was _our) paperwork. When we said no, and gave her ours, her eyes got as big as saucers and she said to go back in line, she had to find that family. I don't know if she ever did--I didn't see her go back to the guest check in line for the 15 mins we were waiting.

I really tried to find things to enjoy about the cruise--the palo dining was probably the highlight for me. But overall--Meh.
