There is a wedding "expert" from theknot.com on our local news right now clueing in the public about how much to spend for weddings and showers...I don't think I have ever spent this much on anyone...

60.00 and up for the couples engagement gift
40.00 and up for the couples shower
40.00 and up for the bride's bachlorette party
100-200 for the wedding gift

Am I the only one that thinks this is more than a little bit high? I don't think anyone gave DH and I an engagement gift, nor did I expect one, and if I did it sure wouldn't have been 60 bucks!!!!!

Really, what I spend depends on how I feel about the couple.

If it is someone I love dearly and am close to, I tend to spend more.

i'm so glad we're in our 50s and most of our friends are either married or divorced - no more weddings to attend....

(until my DS settles down - told him to wait til he's in his 30s, at least!)

I'm sure the "expert" gets plenty of ad revenue from business that sell gifts. (Not to mention diamonds, honeymoons, the list is endless.)
So...all she has to do is convince folks that whatever $$ amount The Knot has determined is acceptable will be the amount we'll spend. Don't think so. It was a nice try, though.

I think all that is nuts, except the actual wedding present....

We actually received several monetary gifts over $300.

We usually give $150 - $250 for a wedding present.

I don't think we spend anything on the other 3. You would have to ask my wife.

Did you have an engagement party? The figures sound right to me except maybe for the engagment gift. I do not think engagement partys are something everyone does.

I am at the age when all of my friends are getting married and that actually seems pretty normal to me. Of course it varies on friends, family, etc.

If that's true, I'm not going to be a happy camper! Many of my friends are reaching the point where I know they're going to be engaged soon. How am I supposed to afford a wedding gift when I think twice about treating myself to an ice cream cone on my salary?!? Haha.

ITA!

Though I don't think I've ever given an engagement gift. The numbers they listed didn't seem too far off though.

I would say the numbers for the shower gift and, depending on the couple, the wedding gift. But, the engagement and the bachelorette party? Ugh. And we only spend that much on our family for a wedding gift.

I agree with you. These prices would never fly around here. I spend anywhere from $50 to $100 for a wedding present. I haven't attended a bachelorette party since 1989 and we bought the bride her drinks and a cucumber and some other "toys." I would have never imagined that you are supposed to take a real present to a bachelorette party.

Those numbers seem right on target for around here but I would switch the engagement gift price and the shower price- usually its more on the shower less onhe engagement. I REALLY hate engagement parties, they are just another giant gift grab- you are already getting shower and wedding gifts so you REALLY need to suck another gift out of people for the same wedding???? Just very greedy to me.

This is fairly typical except the engagement gift, unless they are having an engagement party, which isn't all that common... the other sum's are in line with what we pay, oh wait, we pay the 100 for the shower, nowhere near 40....

60.00 and up for the couples engagement gift-we don't give engagement presents
40.00 and up for the couples shower -depends on the couple-usually 100-200
40.00 and up for the bride's bachlorette party-I hate going out, my presence is my gift, seriously, no one gives gifts for a bachlorette party in our area:)
100-200 for the wedding gift-200 on up, again depending on the couple.

I think it depends on how close you are to the couple. 200.00 seems right for a wedding gift (to me)

The rest I don't know about... I have never bought anyone an engagement gift, that's crazy! lol and the shower gift, of course if I'm invited.

All my friends keep getting married, but I am still in school. I keep telling them to wait until I graduate to get married :) I'm lucky to spend $50 on the wedding gift and $20 on the shower. Someday I would love to do more, but right now it just isn't feasible.

I think those numbers are a good average as well. We had an engagement party, had a tiny wedding with 2 other people in CA, and are renewing our vows at home next summer. We received some VERY generous engagement presents, far about what those numbers suggest. I'm not having a shower or a bachelorette party since I'm already married, so at least people will save money there!

I would think the amount for the bachelorette party is what it will cost you to attend:rotfl: Only the close girlfriends of the Bride have to do that;)
