Seriously, what is your problem with Drudge?

And no accusation taken! :thumbsup2 We're having a good conversation here.

It would be absolutely legit to say "I found it on Drudge" if the story is a link to a mainstream news outlet.

I think I safely speak for many people here when I say that what gets my ire up is when someone assigns the same legitimacy to a non-linked "exclusive" that can't be found elsewhere, or when someone makes the ridiculous claim as Dawn recently did that Drudge is more accurate than the New York Times and tries to pass it off as fact.

As the "newspaper of record", The New York Times publishes corrections when warranted in order to set the record straight. To my knowledge, I don't believe that Drudge ever has, and I would welcome a verifiable cite from someone who can prove otherwise. On the day that you can find a "corrections" link on Drudge's front page, I would be happy to upgrade my overall opinion of the site.

Drudge ran a story, in 2004, about how Howard Dean's brother's body (found in SE Asia) was given full military honors. The rightwing was all up in arms even demanding Howard Dean answer for the favoritism.

As it turned out, the only military honors he received was a flag-draped coffin and a military detail that took the casket off the military plane. Anyone of us, who is an American citizen, can have a flag over our caskets. If the military takes us home, we're going to get the same reception.

Full military honors is a ritual and my DH is the bugler who plays taps. But did Drudge correct his "story"? To the best of my knowledge, he didn't. So Drudge has a history of not correcting stories that turned out to be wrong.

And excuse the hell out of me, but if someone goes after someone else through their dead relative without checking or correcting the story, with an apology, they're a crap hack even in the world of yellow journalism.

As far as the Drudge exclusive over a "little blue dress", here's hoping they find another little blue dress in the WH so the Republicans can get behind impeaching the sack of crap occupying it now. But, I digress.

I have no problem with doing that. I know in the past there have been time where in the interest of honesty I've said something like "I saw this linked on Drudge..." and then provide the link to the other source.
:goodvibes That's probably just me being too uptight about citation.

You're thinking too much: That's the problem. ;)

Again, Matt Drudge has filled in for Rush Limbaugh on occasion, and has his own very right-leaning radio show. Anyone who knows those two facts and still can't understand how he could be dismissed as a partisan hack just isn't being honest.

I don't realy care about partisan as long as it is the truth that is being reported. Drudge doesn't even seem to print retractions when reports are blatently false.

They just disappear and his fans never say a word. :rolleyes1

I agree with this as well! :) Any of his 'developing news' stuff should be backed up by another source. I hold all media to that standard.

Absolutely. I long for the days where a journalist would require two sources to verify a story before it would be printed.

I'm still waiting to see what his latest "scoop" is from today, it currently says:

HISTORIC: RUSH LIMBAUGH/BILL CLINTON FACE-TO-FACE AT NYC RESTAURANT... DEVELOPING...

The problem is, it's been "developing" all freaking morning long. That's one annoying thing about Drudge, he puts those kind of headlines out there and then you don't get any more news until hours later. It's like your local news when they say "After the break, we'll tell you how eating a particular kind of food can kill you". It's just a teaser.

I go to Drudge's site every day, mainly because I like the variety of links, and you can sometimes find some funny stories. However, he is totally right wing, his headlines are always biased and he rairly links to stories that are negative about Republicans. I get news from all kinds of sources, and has been said here already a few times, everyone is biased. And if you don't think that "your" news source is, you're a fool.

Yeah, but your sources can't be Rove and Gipper, your imaginary friend.

McDonalds or Burger King???????:goodvibes

I'm listening to Rush now (as much as it pains me...lol), and he's talking about it, but I missed the first part, so I'm still not sure what happened. All he's talking about is how he was at some restaurant and people were taking pictures, but I still don't see what the big deal is.

Considering his 'reports' started on the old alt.showbiz.gossip usenet group, I don't know why he is considered a serious journalist.

This. Some of us from the old USENET days remember his long, rambling, virtually illiterate "DRUDGE REPORTS" in which he would regurgitate 4 day old box office stats from VARIETY as "Exclusives." (He's removed most of his old posts, but they may still exist somewhere, especially the SLUDGE REPORT takeoffs that various people wrote to mock him). He was a spammer, and a really sorry excuse for one, too.

And his semi-erotic loveletter to Babe the Pig (don't know WHAT he was smoking that day). And my personal favorite, the "review" he wrote of a Joey Lawrence concert (given the "Babe" and "Blossom" tv show references, you can see how far back we go), in which he wrote that hundreds of Lawrence fans in the audience "literally lactated" when he came on stage.

Tween girls "literally lactating" -- THAT'S the Drudge we knew way back when. Every other word a typo, the worst kind of jr. high prose... and then the Lewinsky scandal broke and suddenly people thought he was some on the ball investigative reporter or something, instead of a stooge who got picked up and used for other people's purposes.

If next year you start hearing Paris Hilton lauded for her critical analysis of world events, that's as likely as Drudge being taken seriously is for those of us who knew him way back when.
