Meet the Cast!

Derrick - my spouse and own personal Wookiee!

All of us live in Tacoma, WA. I put our Disney superlatives in my pre-trip report, but I am going to provide them here for ease of reference. I know they've changed (or have been reinforced) on this most recent trip, so I will put the new ones in at the end of this trip report.

Derrick:
Park: Hollywood Studios

Favorite Restaurant: Biergarten

Favorite Disney Character: Donald Duck

Favorite Princess: Leia

Favorite Disney Movie: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Favorite Snack at the World: A tie between the escargot at Chefs de France and the Earth Day cupcake we had at ABC Commissary on our last trip.

Favorite Ride: Star Tours and the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor because he got to be 'That Guy'.

Favorite Ride: Spaceship Earth (I KNOW, but I LOVE IT!)

Favorite Disney Park Show: Celebrate the Magic.

Travel Day or... I Love a Red Eye):

When I fly East, I much prefer taking a red eye flight. It helps me to avoid jet lag by sleeping (or in my case, resting) overnight and then I can hit the ground running. The only drawback is a full day of (potentially anxious) anticipation. My sister-in-law was able to drop her dogs off with their sitter the night before, so she was able to take a more leisurely morning before her mani/pedi. I'd wanted to get my mani/pedi done earlier in the week, but since my hair had faded so much from the previous color, I needed to get it touched up again.

First color:

Second color (three weeks later):

I figure it will be fun for folks to watch the color of my hair change over the course of this trip report!

So I ended up getting my mani/pedi in the late morning of our departure day. The salon was crazy busy with a bridal party that had been there for 2 hours prior to my appointment, so I just got a simple shellac mani with dark purple glitter polish and a silver glitter accent nail. I didn't take pictures because I wasn't super happy with it (plus it was peeling by the time I got home). Still, it was a relaxing hour that killed some time.

Melissa's appointment was later in the afternoon. We planned on meeting up at her place at about 4pm. We were leaving our car in her garage and she was driving all of us to the extended stay parking lot near the airport. She wanted to eat at The Cheesecake Factory before we hit the airport, but the traffic was crazy and with all the recent reports about crazy TSA lines, we decided to head there first and eat inside.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (or Seatac) has a pretty decent TSA line, with a faster line for first class passengers (not so at Orlando, which we will discuss later). We got through pretty zippily - minus me having to get a pat down because the body scanner showed something 'suspicious' in my underwear area. No joke.

Seatac is also getting a pretty decent representation of local restaurants and vendors in the terminal. It's not like the airport in Austin, TX, but it's getting better. We had a light dinner at Anthony's, a seafood restaurant. Afterwards, I wanted to stop at the Dilettante Chocolate stand for a couple of truffles.

This is the Madame X truffle. It's white chocolate with an anisette center and a dark -chocolate X. It's my mother's and my favorite and I send her a box of them most Christmases.

After killing another hour or so, we finally got to board. Let me just say, I loathe American Airlines planes. Their coach is terrible, and first class not much more comfortable. They had these weird dividers under the seats that made it really difficult to find a comfy position. I finally passed out for 90 minutes or so out of a 4 hour flight. They did serve a lovely fruit and cheese plate and a hummus plate that D and I enjoyed immensely. Plus, they had Magic Sky Juice (ginger ale), so it wasn't too awful. They MORE than made up for it on the leg from Charlotte to Orlando. We got a plane that usually does international flights, so first class had the seats that turn into beds. As soon as they gave us the go, we all laid down and slept for the 70 minute flight.

We landed at MCO a bit more refreshed than we'd been in Charlotte. As we made our way out of the gate, I saw the greatest sight ever!

As a born and raised New Englander, I miss Dunkin's every day I live in WA. I miss jelly doughnuts made correctly, with granulated sugar instead of glaze and actual jelly instead of pie filling. I got an iced coffee 'reglah' for myself and D, three bacon, egg and cheese croissants and that perfect jelly doughnut.

SO. GOOD.

After breakfast, we made our way to Disney's Magical Express. On our last trip, I started tearing up when we were watching the promo videos on the bus. This time, I started tearing up WHEN WE PASSED THE DISNEY STORE because these two little kids gasped "It's Mickey!!". I know. I am a mess.

There was a family in front of us in the All Star Movies line that we crossed paths with several times over our trip. Apparently, they were part of a large family group where someone else did all the planning. The planner put silly nicknames on all their Magic Bands, unbeknownst to this particular branch of the family tree. The dad was super irritated because he had to figure out which nickname belonged to which person when they were checking in at the front of the line. I felt bad for him, since he was traveling with three small boys who were tired and cranky - but it was pretty funny.

On the DME.

I got the text that our room was ready while we were in line. Melissa had made all the arrangements, so she was a bit surprised that her room wasn't ready, but we had plenty of stuff to change into in our carry-ons and she could hang in our room until hers was ready.

We were in Toy Story Building 10, first floor. Melissa had requested adjoining rooms, so we didn't get the king beds we'd had last time. I read that the king beds were in accessible rooms, so we were fine with the double beds - though D and I ended up sleeping apart for the week because those beds are SMALL! We'd just gotten into our room when Melissa got the text that hers was ready and she'd succeeded in getting the adjoining room.

I loved the location. Woody greeted us every morning.

Melissa moved over to her room. We shared out our Garden Grocer delivery and got ready for...

Next Installment - The First Park Day or... Why do we do this to ourselves?

OK my computer hasn't been letting me quote but I must ask a question about the jelly donuts:
WHY would anyone put glaze on a jelly donut???? As a New Yorker......that offends me :snooty:
:D

Following!

Thanks for coming to play!

They just don't know any better. It makes me weep. My friend and I want to have a donut truck for our retirement business. I taught her the glory that is granulated sugar and actual jelly. She taught me a killer peanut butter buttercream for Fluffernutter donuts.

The First Park Day...or Why Do We Do This To Ourselves?

At this point in the trip report, I thought it would be fun to compare what our original plans were to what we ended up doing. Here were the first day plans per my pre-trip report:

"Arrival Day: Our flight has been changed. We're arriving much earlier now and should be dropped off at the resort by 11:00am. I am not optimistic that our rooms will be ready, but I always travel prepared. We'll change for the afternoon/evening and ask them to hold our carry-on bags for us. Then we will be heading over to the Boardwalk for lunch at the Boardwalk Bakery. After that, it's off to DHS for the following FPs:

4:40p Toy Story Midway Mania
6:15p Star Tours
8:00p Tower of Terror

I imagine we will have dinner at a QS that night in the parks, likely Backlot Express so we can partake in some Star Wars goodies before we head back to the resort."

As you can see from the Travel Day, we did get into our rooms fairly quickly and were in fact there by 11am. We decided to go for a quick swim and nap for a bit before heading on to our plans. I love the Fantasia Pool at All-Star Movies, but neglected to get my own picture, so here's one by Sue Holland/Mouse Planet:

By 2pm, we were all feeling a bit antsy and wanted to get to a park ASAP, so we bagged the plans to go eat at Boardwalk Bakery and headed straight to Disney's Hollywood Studios. We reviewed QS menus on the MDE app and settled on Fairfax Fare.

We made it through bag check and security relatively quickly. D was first of us to be randomly selected for extra security. We used our Magic Bands for the first time, doing the fingerprint set-up. In the short walk past the entrance, I realized I didn't have any sun block (it was all in my checked bags) and it was still bright enough that I was concerned about burning. We bought some spray sun block and went off over by the restrooms to spray each other down.

Successfully sun-protected, we made a beeline for Fairfax Fare. I am writing a dining report (located HERE) with more detailed reviews of our dining experiences, but here's what we had:

At left, 1/2 rack of ribs. At right, Fairfax Salad with pulled pork.

Pink Lemonade cupcake

Bleargh. Hot. SO HOT and HUMID! I hate it so much. As we made our way towards Pixar Place for our first FP at Toy Story Midway Mania, we stopped in as many shops as possible to soak up some AC. Once at the ride, the FP line was LOOOONG and VERY WARM. More bleargh. Still, we were pretty happy to be there and going on our first ride of the trip!

We had a fair wait until our next FP, so we took refuge in one of the places we know best - the ABC Commissary. On our 2014 trip, we had two very heavy rain days - like a foot of rain in a few hours days. Once at Epcot (which will come up again) and once for hours at DHS. When it was raining too hard for my SIL's to operate well, we holed up at ABC. It welcomed us again, this time to soothe our baking and sweaty skin.

At this point, Melissa felt like she was fading fast. We left early to check the standby wait for Star Tours - which was only 15 minutes! Basically, we just walked through the queue and got right in line at Bay E. This was our first time riding with the Jakku/BB8 scenes, which I enjoyed very much! Then we got Coruscant. I love the feeling of diving straight down through the city. It reminds me of another well-loved sci-fi flick, The Fifth Element. (Who wouldn't love to live in a world with all clothes designed by Gaultier?)

We got off Star Tours with enough time to make it over to Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away. Melissa left us here and headed back to the resort. D and I both found the show fun and were pleasantly surprised that Disney is not ignoring the prequels like so many people want to. Honestly, the score to Phantom Menace is one of the greatest ever written! I could have done with a little bit of shade, but at least we were there after 5pm.

After the show, we made our way over to Tower of Terror. As you can see, we did have a FP, but not until 8:00pm. The standby wait time showed 20 minutes, so we got in line. We chatted with a lovely lady who wanted to talk about how much Shanghai was affecting the parks (I was good and did not roll my eyes.)

Let's talk about ToT, okay? I rode it for the first time in 2014. After the first ride (back row seat, left side against the wall - this is important, bear with me), I was pretty shaken and didn't want to go on again. It was Melissa's third and final ride on it. Derrick really wanted to ride again and would normally go on a ride by himself, but not ToT. I agreed to go on again (first row, right side against the wall). This time, I LOVED it!

For the two years prior to this trip, I couldn't wait to go on ToT again. I was looking forward to it as much as Celebrate the Magic - which is a lot! When we lined up for this trip, I saw we would be in the first row again and I THOUGHT I was in the right position to get the first row, right side against the wall again.

I could not have been more wrong.

First row, right side: yes. But on the center aisle. Nightmare.

In my rapidly developing anxiety, I accidentally buckled my seat belt over my cross body bag - which was still across my body. I couldn't get the belt tight enough, which was freaking me out. There was a bar that I could grab with one hand in front of D, so I clutched it as hard as I could. Once the elevator locked into position for the falling, I was shrieking and wrapping my free hand desperately around the back of my seat, trying to feel more secure. The random rise/fall sequence was the longest I'd ever experienced.

Look at how excited almost everyone else is...

Look at how unexcited I am.

I was shaking from the minute we got off the ride until we were half-way back to our resort.

Yes, it was an early night. We'd slept so little and our poor, sun-deprived PNW bodies really need a slower, gentler introduction to heat and humidity.

Next up? More DHS! An EMH morning and a Star Wars dessert party. Tune in soon for:

Melissa, Don't Blind the Jawa! (Day 2)

ToT is really terrifying!! No matter how many times I ride it, I still almost pee my pants a little! The last time I rode it, we were crying/laughing/screaming... it was one of those "my body doesn't know which emotion it's experiencing so let's cover all bases" lol

I am sure I will always freak out a bit on it - but that's the same with any thrill ride, for me. I just now know that my 'happy place' on this ride is against the wall!

This is exactly how I was for quite awhile - until I reached the point where I could ride without holding on to anything!!!! ::yes:: Yup that's right, I'm now a hands-in-the-air TOT girl :thumbsup2
It's ok though Linda, not everyone can be as cool as I am lol!!!

Your face on TOT made me laugh! It reminded me of the first time my boyfriend talked me into going on it - I was terrified! I ended up loving it, but I was holding on for dear life the entire time!

I'm looking forward to reading about the dessert party, I really want to do one on our next trip!

Joining in here too!
It's awesome to see pictures of you and I LOVE your dress!!!!!!!!!!!!
And your hair!!! :cloud9:

Melissa, Don't Blind the Jawa! (Day 2)

Sunday morning, we were up & at 'em so we could get to EMH at Hollywood Studios. Here's the original plan:

Sunday: Back at DHS for EMH am. Still making a beeline to ride ToT and RnRC while it's not crowded. FPs:

9:20a Star Tours
10:20a TSMM
11:30a Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular

Lunch at Mama Melrose. Mid-day break at the resort, head to Disney Springs for shopping and Raglan Road Dinner.

Quite a bit of deviation from our plans today - not the least of which was booking the Symphony in the Stars Dessert Party, which we decided on a little less than a month before we left. But let's get on with the day!

Well-rested and content from a night in AC, our steps were springy and we made our way to DHS. It was beautiful out - nice and cool so early in the morning. We stopped for some Photopass photos:

You will note that we are all wearing Star Wars Mickey Ear shirts that Melissa made for us. I was pretty stoked that one of the 'grab bag' skirts I ordered from Amazon (a bag of 5 skirts for $35) ended up with a gold side so I could more fully Disneybound my C3PO shirt.

After our photo, we diligently made our way to RnRC and ToT. I am not kidding when I say I was feeling a bit jumpy as the screams from ToT started wafting our way. I don't know that it was the BEST idea I've ever had, waiting outside RnRC while Melissa and D rode. Every time I heard ToT screams I flinched a little bit, so I decided to call my mom and fill her in on the journey thus far. While I talked to her, I watched the PhotoPass photographer set up for the day and flinched every time I heard screams.

D and Melissa came off the ride, exhilarated as always. It's Melissa's 2nd favorite ride in Disney Parks. We decided to get our own pictures taken with my friend (unknown to him), the PhotoPass guy.

One of us (I don't remember who) realized that our lunch reservation wasn't for hours yet and needed to get something to eat. We wandered over to Starring Rolls (another first) and grabbed some munchies. I laid eyes on the famous Butterfinger cupcake - I am about to say something controversial, so grab your smelling salts or avert your eyes - but I did not find it the least bit appealing. I enjoy Butterfingers immensely, but that was probably the most unappetizing form of Butterfinger ever.

You can look back now.

It was time to do what Derrick had been aching to do for months:

LAUNCH BAY!!

First, I am going to interrupt this trip report to tell you a bit about my husband. When I first moved out to Washington, it was shortly before Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith opened. D and I went to see Sin City and during the previews, the Lucasfilm logo shone across the screen and he almost jumped out of his seat. It was our first time getting to see the preview. He couldn't contain himself and was hooting and hollering all through it until, "You were the Chosen One!" and he's wiping away tears, sniffling "That's right - he was the Chosen One." And that, friends, is one of the many reasons my husband delights me.

Sorry for the distraction. Anyway, we checked the wait times and decided to meet Kylo Ren first. SO WEIRD that there's never as long a wait to meet Kylo as there is to meet Chewie. /sarcasm

I know. I am a grown adult. I am fully aware that this is a cast member in a costume with pre-recorded responses. Like pretty much everyone else who has met him has said, it's weirdly intimidating to meet him. He zeroed in on Melissa while I made sure Derrick was between me and him at all times.

You'll notice how far away we're standing from him.

Acting tough, but notice - still not standing that close.

After finishing up with Kylo, we checked out more of the props and costumes around the Launch Bay. We saw a lone Jawa over by the holo-chess set. Melissa asked the cast member nearest us if she could take a picture with the Jawa. The cast member told her she could ask for a picture, but it would help if she had something to trade. "He'd probably take your landspeeder..." referring to Melissa's ECV. Miss starts digging through her bag to find something to trade with. She pulls out a Wet One and a Band-Aid. D refused to offer either of them to the Jawa, so Melissa was going to. We moved over closer to the Jawa and Melissa started to haggle. The Jawa reaches over and pulls the key out of her ECV and starts dancing around the room in delight. Miss was wearing a couple of Seahawks bracelets she'd made, so she tugged one off and held it out, "Here! I will trade you this for my key!"

The Jawa comes back over to check out the bracelet and Miss grabbed her key back while shoving the bracelet in his hand. The Jawa examined it and I guess he liked it, so he gave her a Build-A-droid body. Then she asked for a photo. The Jawa was about to pose, but unfortunately Melissa didn't realize her flash was still on. She didn't even get a photo - the flash went off full in his face. The CM handling the Jawa and Derrick both gasped at the same time, "No flash!" while the Jawa wandered around blindly.

No one can make you feel worse about accidentally blinding a Jawa than your Star Wars nerd younger brother. Oh, the guilt trips he laid on her! Melissa apologized profusely. The CM handler said it was okay and asked, "Seriously though - you got your key back, right?"

Everyone had everything they were supposed to, so we finished this visit to Launch Bay. We'd spent a lot of time at Launch Bay and had already decided to skip our FP for Star Tours (honestly, it was pretty easy to walk on Star Tours every time we were at DHS), but we didn't want to miss our TSMM FP. HOWEVER, as we were leaving the Launch Bay we saw everyone staking out their spots for the March of the First Order. This a pretty cool stage show, brief but stunning. We were along the exit route and therefore had a little bit of shade, but another show in blinding hot sun (yech). Still, Captain Phasma and her garrison looked fantastic!

We hustled on over to TSMM. This time, we got a car that where the two middle seats were broken, so it was just the three of us playing against each other. It doesn't matter who wins or loses (I won), just that we all had fun! (Did you catch that I won?)

Next up, One Man's Dream. I hadn't seen this attraction before, but I really enjoyed all the models and memorabilia. I was especially delighted that some of my favorite Epcot memories were present.

Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit!

The trailer showing when we went was 'Through the Looking Glass'. Gorgeous, but I would rather watch old Disney short films or news reels or bits from the old Walt Disney Presents. I don't need to see more ads in my life.

We tried booking it over for our Indiana Jones FP, but by the time we got over there it was standing room only. I was melting, so we went to Backlot Express and got frozen cherry slushes. Those slushes are magical at cooling you off. We still had a fair amount of time before our lunch reservation, so we decided to do the Muppets 3D. I freaking love the Muppets and never get tired of them, but I seem to have blocked out that weird little 3D character. Bleargh. I do hope Disney can keep the Muppets alive, but I don't think that attraction serves them in the best way.

We had a nice lunch at Mama Melrose, then headed back to the resort for swimming and naps - or any combination thereof.

Late that afternoon, we headed back to DHS for more Launch Bay and the Symphony in the Stars Dessert Party. D's Magic Band/fingerprint didn't work for him, so they pulled him aside to ask him if it was the first time he'd used the band (no) and if it was his first time using his band at this park (also no). He said we'd been at the park earlier in the day. She asked, "Why did you leave?" "Because we were hot?" She seem to be surprised by that answer, but then took his photo and we were on our way. (I'm assuming they do this to make sure people aren't sharing tickets.)

It was off to meet Chewbacca! It's easy to see why Chewbacca always had the longer waits. He's a big ol' cuddly Wookiee! After we took our photos, he pointed at my Jawa pendant and shook his head. I apologized - I know he doesn't like them. He made a point to have a little moment with each of us. It was a great character meet - right up there with meeting Mike & Sulley last trip.

Melissa meets Chewie!

Chewie and my Wookiee!

At this point, Miss was getting hungry and wanted to make sure she had real food before the dessert party (protein vs. sweets, you know). As we walked over to Min & Bill's, I saw a woman with a stroller flipping out on a cast member. I don't know what set her off, but she snapped, "I guess that's just Disney as usual!" and stormed off. I did not laugh out loud at her, but it was a struggle.

We noticed that folks were already checking in for the dessert party, so we did as well. There was no line yet, so we continued over to Min & Bill's - another first for us. D and I split a chili dog and Melissa had the pulled pork mac&cheese (more about both will appear in my dining report). I noticed the line for the dessert party table gauntlet starting to form, so we joined the line when we were done eating.

Even though the initial line seemed long, it really wasn't. The party didn't fill up until later, We easily got to a table right up front and then D and I went to photograph the food tables. Again, I will go more into the food in the dining report, but man - was there a ton of food! The CMs were really on top of keeping the trays filled and fresh.

A couple of Stormtroopers came over to harass one of the party attendees. They made her get her ID. The whole interaction was pretty cute.

At last it was time to settle in for the show. D and I copied the kids next to us and sat on the pavement. I really could not get over literally everyone sitting down in front of the stage. I feel like that only happened at fireworks shows in the small towns where I grew up, so it was lovely to be able to sit and watch. What an epic show! Hands down, my favorite fireworks show ever! The music was gorgeous, the lines chosen were so touching and it was beautifully choreographed. I pretty much always get choked up watching any fireworks and D usually gets choked up when he sees new Star Wars things, so the two of us were kind of a mess.

After the show, we were able to duck out under the ropes and head over for one last ride on Star Tours before we headed back to the resort. It is a true testament to our Star Wars fan status that we could ride so many times even though the first part of the ride was exactly the same. We made a game of finding all the tiny variations they'd added in the older scenes. (Also, it was surprising that we'd remembered the old scenes so well, since it had been 2 years since we last rode Star Tours.)

Of all the parks, I always felt like it took the least amount of time to get back to our resort from DHS. The nights we went, it seemed like there were always massive lines for ASMusic and short ones for ASMovies. Epcot had the best dispatch managers, MK had the friendliest. We'll talk more about DAK buses in the next installment:

Day 3: Is this bus EVER coming?

Oh my God!!!!
I have to say this: I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!
That whole Star Wars day was just awesome!!!!! I laughed so hard at your stories about meeting the Jawa and Kylo and I LOVE your outfit!!!

Forgive me if I've told you this already, but seeing as your husband is such a huge SW fan I feel the need to (possibly) tell you (again): my stepson is James Earl Jones's pool boy ::yes::
And also speaking of SW, I loved the Symphony in the Stars fireworks :cloud9: I love Hallowishes and I thought the Frozen fireworks were beautiful even though I'm not a fan of Frozen, but the SW ones really blew us away. I know it's a "new" show now and we're looking forward to seeing it in November.
